Welcome to the M-301 Extended (M-301 X) tutorial!
Forth tutorial released by me, K4S. Concept for the mod by White_Sheath & Trevor.
Need a mechanical pencil mod that doesn’t draw so much attention? Tired of people asking what the hell you’re writing with at school? Well look no further, I’ve got the mod for you!
The name of the mod is quite self explanatory. It takes the Zebra M-301 pencil and extends it, allowing for easier spinning while keeping its sleek original look. This mod is easy to make by my standards…the only equipment you need to make this is an xacto/utility knife and tape.
Never the less, as easy as this mod is to make I take no responsibility if you are an idiot and hurt yourself while making my mod. Remember, you can’t pen spin without fingers.
Some Stats:
-19cm length
- If made correctly COG is ~0.5cm from the COP (back heavy)
- Weight is similar to a signo tipped comssa (maybe a little lighter)
So let us begin…
1.
You need one pack of 2 Zebra M-301 pencils.
2.
Disassemble both pencils (if you cant figure out how, you should abandon this mod now. Srsly.)
3.
Cut the pieces accordingly. Exact measurements are not vital…just try to cut it similar to the picture
4.
Okay this will be the most difficult part of this mod. You need to wrap tape around the cut sections from step#3 such that it will fit very snugly into the metal M-301 body. It’s not hard, it just takes a while to get it right. Start with a long piece of tape and cut a little off each time and try sliding into the metal section until you get a nice fit.
5.
Cut the following pieces accordingly. Again, exact measurements are not essential but try to get it as close to the specified numbers as you can. You will want the larger sections of what you just cut.
6.
Tape the 2 sections together. (optional: You will see that one side has a larger diameter than the other piece…you can carefully shave down the sides until the diameter’s are similar so they fit better when taped together.)
7.
Picture of the all the pieces needed before assembly
8.
Assemble the exterior of the pencil. Put the mechanical pencil tube in last. If you made my mod correctly up until now it should slide in from the back. Screw on the tip, and put the back plug on last.
Final Product!
Trouble Shooting Questions:
Q: I cant fit the mechanical pencil tube section in after I assembled the body, what did I do wrong?
A: Make sure you followed my instructions. Next make sure the black tube sections that hold the pencil together aren’t compressed from being cut that they block the mech pencil tube from going through.
Q: I made the mechanical pencil tube section too short! Is there any fix?
A: Not really, buy another pack of Zebra M-301 pencils…they’re cheap
Q: I cant get the correct amount of tape, so I cant get the metal sections to stay together.
A: Try harder.
Q: I hurt myself doing making your mod, I demand compensation!
A: Well, I demand you post pictures so I can laugh at you. -

looks nice. i hardly check out pen modification/trading threads, but i'm glad i saw this.
EDIT: a small question on mechanical pensil mods. doesn't it get annoying if you keep dropping your pencil and the lead breaks? or do you spin without lead and only use lead when you write?
that's quite irritating. -
Date: Sat, Sep 29 2007 08:05:17
The only time lead breaks is when its coming out of the tip and you drop it. Then it just breaks the tip. If the lead is inside the mechanical pencil tube it seldom breaks when you drop it...that's what i've experienced anyway.

Nice mod, looks easy to make, good job
-
Date: Sun, Oct 7 2007 22:09:03
How much did you pay for the pencils? I went online and they wanted about 5 bucks for 2 of them.
-

I payed $5 for 2 of them at walmart

How's the momentum and how thick is it?
-
Date: Thu, Oct 11 2007 00:27:39
I would compare it to a bic in terms of thickness and as for momentum, unfortunately, there isnt much since the ends arent weighted with grips or anything.
-

People won't ask what I'm writing with, they'll say, "WOW THAT'S A LONG PENCIL!" -

Hmm... I don't like the BIC's barrel size. :[ -

Are those from Dollarama?
-
Date: Sat, Oct 13 2007 15:38:51
No, they aren't from Dollarama. Walmart and Staples definitely have them. They are quite common so you can probably find them in other stores too.
-
Date: Sun, Oct 14 2007 23:41:45
i totally put an outsert on the pen version... it looks awesome... i will show picture later
-
Date: Sun, Oct 14 2007 23:44:04
...but then it doesnt have that "professional" classroom look which kind of defeats the purpose lol
-
Date: Mon, Oct 15 2007 00:33:29
i know but its looks sexy... and to add a classroom look so it dont look totally flashy... i put an hgg grip which makes it more off balance but i like it like that
-
Date: Tue, Oct 23 2007 21:21:24
Hey K4S, what can I do to make this pen to do inifinity with?
-
Date: Wed, Oct 24 2007 00:24:04
Damn, I like it, but I've only got one M-301.
Guess I'll have to go get some.
And for Imagm... the grips that are a part of the pen aren't bad... they work for infinities. You might want to add a grip on each end to keep it balanced, and extend the front over the metal of the tip. -

Umm do you mind explaining to me how to do that? I mean, are there grips from the pen? And isn't the tip actually a plastic tip?? -
Date: Wed, Oct 24 2007 02:47:22
i suppose you could try adding some rsvp/hgg grips on the front for infinities if you want...
-
Date: Wed, Oct 24 2007 13:30:59
It look really good considering the metal and things, but don't you think it's too heavy?
But i like this. i remember a guy who made something similar with these metal pens/MP. -
Date: Thu, Oct 25 2007 20:10:22QUOTE (Imagm-1337 @ Oct 23 2007, 10:20 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Umm do you mind explaining to me how to do that? I mean, are there grips from the pen? And isn't the tip actually a plastic tip??
The grip on the pen is plastic, but holds well and doesn't come off, and the tips seems metal to me... Maybe it's just metallic.
Anyways, I just meant add grips on both ends from other pens... and leave the grip sticking out over where the tube pops out to write... That way it doesn't whack your fingers. You can always move em back when you're actually writing with the pen. -

great mod, i made one a lil under 10 minutes.
fairly simple mod to make and it looks amazing!
also 5 bucks for 2 at most Stores in the US.
I got the tape right on the first go, was about one and 3/4 around the tube and it fit pretty snugly.
Very low profile pen that most people dont even know its a mod.
Barrel is a bit thin, but the Great look makes up for it.
a nice pencil to write with but im afraid to drop it and ding the shiny metal up =P -
Date: Wed, Apr 23 2008 05:12:34
Nice mod, i just made one. I'm working on the pen version ATM. the pencil was much easier although the middle joint seems somewhat loose. overall. it works, clicker works. pencil lead comes out...it spins kinda weird but hey, it looks good. I think putting grips on it would look weird. I'm not gonna do it.
Otherwise. Good mod. Who cares who came up with it. -
Date: Tue, May 20 2008 05:53:26
Super sexy, now if someone were to com up with a mod to make it use 0.9 mm lead, it would be absolutely perfect in every way.
-

what's so good about .9 mm lead?
-
Date: Fri, May 23 2008 23:27:23
it's thicker so it's more stable?
-

This is pretty much the same instructions for the pen type huh? Or is it different?
-

Nice Ill use it in school my GJH doesnt have any lead. Next time i go to Walmart Ill buy some M-301s. Thanks K4S
-
Date: Wed, Jun 11 2008 15:33:07
It looks fantastic! If I'll have that pencils I'll do this mod
BUT, where I can get this pencils? I think it isn't so popular, I never saw it... -

It would look better if you put grips on the back. If you put tape on the back, it will look tacky and really looked like a "modded" pen. -

I figured that when K4S says to use tape to make the metal body fit snugly on the barrel of the pencil, essentially you want it to be a tight fit.
That should solve your little problem, cause it helped with mine and it was more or less the same situation as yours. -

Just made one yesterday and i must say tat this mod is rele nice and i like the feel of it. maybe now my friends wont be telling me that my pens look stupid. also for u guys who wanna do infinities with this mod, what i did was i had an extra old pair of skullcandy headphones, and i took the smallest earbud thing and i put it on over the tip. it actually works rele well for infinities, and it still keeps its classroom look
-

just made one...rele nice to spin and nice look. slightly offbalancd but it works with the way i like to spin

OMFG I LOVE YOU K4S!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Zebra M-301 is one of my favorite writing utensils of all time! great mod, looks exactly like the original M-301 (except it's longer, but that's the entire point). I just made it, it feels really good in your hands, perfect weight, imo. Great looking, great feeling, easy, and easily accessible. 5 stars!
my only complaint is that the pencil is so unique you can't make it unique through customization without ruining it's unique look (if you get that). The only thing I can think of to add and keep its look would be black (maybe gray) RSVP, G2 or HGG grips... but I like it the way it is.
TYVM!!!!!!!!!! -

I just finished making one and i gotta say : I love it !
Ive been looking for a mech pen mod since i prefer using a mech pencil to an actual pen.
Love the shmexy looks, the weight, the balance. Everything !
Thanks alot K4S for this great mod !
I'd post a pic of my results if i could, but i don't know how -

i got the COP=COG with 2 methods
1) if u dont put grips on and stuff, on the led casing inside the pen, halfway between the front and the middle, add some tape (i use heavy electrical condusting tape) and it gets balances
2) take off metal clip and add grips on front and back -
Date: Sun, Feb 8 2009 15:43:51
all i did was slip on a hgg to tip, fits perfectly. add anyball grip. a normal rsvp cap, slide it on the back, but break the metal clip off. hope this helps

pens.
hehehe, now i gotta find one more of them to finish the mod

Is there a more efficient way of pulling the metal clip out? i think that part takes the longest part in the construction of the pencil (aside from tape part). How did u guys pull it out? i pull it out with my hands but it usually ruins the entire black part. Pliers?

awesome pen K4S!! i spin with this jank all day ery day. my teacher is always like "instead of twirling that weird pen in the air, why don't you..." and i'm like "shut up and go f*** urself" she hasnt yelled at me since. :D

Does the lead tube (can't think of a better name) come off automatically, or do you have to force it out?

people found (and posted) a bunch of different ways if you look through the thread. -
Date: Fri, Oct 16 2009 19:37:46
I posted some tips on how to make this before:
1. Most problems can be solved by adding tape. Does the whole pen slide out when you press for lead? Metal part too loose? Just add more tape. It's supposed to be a TIGHT fit.
2. The metal tip isn't necessary for the pen to write.
3. If you drop the pen on its tip, the metal part will disappear... not that it's a bad thing.
...
can't remember if there were any more tips. -

I have a slight problem with this, when I push for lead. The entire lead slides out. It's not a huge problem because it's only when I push for lead and it stays stationary when I don't. But it's kind of irritating. How do I fix this?
-

you have a busted rubber stopper in the tip of the pencil. use the tip you did not use to mod it that is the only way

lol me and unicorndog tried to make this mod cause we both had one of these pencils and it turns out that my pencil was a generic version of the pen and my barrel was skinner so it kept sliding into the other barrel xD

i was making this when i lost the piece that goes on the back [the part the clip is attached to] and that pissed me off cause i spent a good half hour tweaking it
at the moment its fully assembled besides the back piece and its pretty nice! i think ill make this my main school mod. it's still pretty light but i can spin it still. it looks pretty cool when its rotating.. just be careful not to drop it on the tip in front cause it goes into the tip of the pen and mine jammed from it...
im in computer class at the moment which is how im here, but next class my friend is supposed to sell me his m-301 for a dollar [he doesn't spin. but understands my 'pen obsession' as he calls it, so he's helping me out]
5 stars but a little hard to make -

I love this mod. I've always wanted a pencil mod for math XD. But it turns out, I had an extra Zebra so I decided to add that third barrel to this mod.
Spoiler:
the center of gravity actually works out pretty nice with the third barrel. -

nice M-301 extension extension, i like uber long mods so i might have to actually try that out sometime.
anyway, the only reason i was able to make this mod is because i was on a road trip to Florida, while there i got the 2 necessary pencils, but i found something else too.
there's a generic version of this mod out there that has a metal tip. i assume if one were to take this metal tip and attach it to a regular M-301 X you could get COP=COG. unfortunately i could not buy it cuz i had no more moolah. -

Is the momentum good? by that I mean, is most of the pen's weight on the ends of the pen? I have one of the pen but not the mod, and it's really heavy in the middle due to the metal and quite light at the ends, making it quite a challenge to spin. Overall how is it? Need some reviews

I never liked mine. But I think it was because of the metal body.

It seems like all of Zebra's pens are able to fit together to make a mod just from the pens themselves and no other supplies. Such as the ZT even though you need that middle part, the ZGMX just uses z-grip pens, and now this just uses the pens. This brand of pen seems to be the easiest to work with if you are a beginner trying to make a simple mod

I think the M-301 if the mechanical pencil while the F-301 is the pen -

its awful. Little momentum and hard to spin.
