Philosophy / What makes pen spinning so appealing?

During my Junior year last year I captured a glimpse of what it is to spin a pen. It came in the form of a thumbaround tutorial on youtube. For two weeks i struggled with this (at the time a seamingly impossible) trick. When I landed it for the first time i was in school in the middle of class, I stood up with an overwhelming sense of victory and shouted 'YES!'. (I recieved several strange looks but thats besides the point.) Upon landing my first thumbaround, i knew i would be an addict. I have since conquered many more fundamental and some advanced tricks (thank you eso). So what exactly makes spinning a pen so appealing and addictive....Is it the thrill of landing a new trick? Is it the fact that it is something you can do at any given time in any place? (i was spinning during my cousin's wedding not long ago :-) or perhaps it is the in depth sub-culture so dedicated to expanding and perfecting the art of pen spinning. Please my fellow PSers, share your thoughts, what does pen spinning mean to you?

    1) its something most of the people can achieve with time
    2) it kills time (both boring times and school times)
    3) most of the people knows how to do one or two fundamentals, but not many school have a pro spinner in it.. (or office, idk >__>)
    4) it also trains your finger flexibility and responses, good for other things like typing and piano?
    5) idk, it just looks cool to me.. internet here is weak so i spend my time spinning when i dont have internet

The thrill of getting a new trick, doing something other people can't
And it just feals good? Its a really nice challenge, I like that fustration when you can't get a trick, its a ddicting you want it more and more, because you know if you practice enough you'll get it =]

Addiction happens because you want something to do while you're bored and who knows you can get so much out of a writing instrument.
    Can impress people a lot!!!

Yeah go #2! I've had a load of attention from girls.

I just love doing things that others can't. Seeing others fail at trying to pen spin also makes the tricks more appealing.

It looks good.. Kinda like those flashy martial arts like wushu or something.

To me, it's appealling to the eye and I think that everyone who knows the TA should take it deeper and not just stop at TA or charge..

I'm in RI and i think i might be the only person in this state that can spin a pen. As for peer attentioin, i get mixed reactions. A lot of people are amazed and i always love when people ask me to teach them how. Lol i always teach the thumbaround but everyone gives up cause they can't get it, who knows maybe i'll spark someone's interest to further pursue pen spinning. Besides amazement, a couple ppl tell me im gay for taking the time to learn how to spin my pen. They can f@@K off though because there's no way in hell im gonna give up pen spinning based on their opinions. Im an unashamed P.S.er, i have no problem bringing my any-x or rsvp mx to school and practice in front of everyone, and honestly, why should anyone care? Personally, i like being able to do something that nobody in my school can.

I spin pens because I think it looks cool and is just plain fun to do. Yeah, I have people that call me a nerd for spinning my pen, but I really don't care about what they say. I just go ahead and continue spinning my pen.

Why its so appealing? Because its like DotA but materialized*jk*

    Because :

    1. you can compete with friends making you closer to them.

    2. the feeling of doing something successful.

I found it so fun to watch people pen-spin. I found it fascinating and all that. And then I found out about UPSB, and then I got more motivated to learn. xD
It's also so so so satisfying to get even the simplest pen trick right. =]

Hmm, that's a really good question. I think the answer will be different for each person, but I was first drawn to spinning by it's visual appeal. After a while, class got less and less boring, so now I spin to keep myself entertained when I can't be chatting or playing games and whatnot smile.gif

My friend was doing the TA in history class, and I was amazed at the way he effortlessly got it spinning. He taught me how to do it and got me hooked. I like it because there's not a lot of pen spinners at my school, so it feels good to be part of the few that do.

It feels like you have something else you can do while you bored. Sometimes there are days when you can't go out because of snow or rain so you have a pen right next to you to spin. Also whenever I'm in class and I do twisted sonic bust people ask me "how do you do that" and I guess they get impress quick lol

That happened today. During lunch I wanted to show off some of my fundamentals, which is basically all I know, so my friends got pretty amazed at it and failed at the thumbaround. Also, a few days ago it was the beginning of Semester 2 and I didn't know a lot of people in my Religion class except my two friends. I was doing simple thumbarounds, sonics, and infinities and a few people noticed starting asking how I did that and I dind't bother showing them, instead I just showed them more of my noob moves. Quite attractive to girls as well, for some reason. laugh.gif

that's what I get normally, 'people asking me to do it again' but girls...nah, not really, like one of the earlier posts said, they either thought I'm a nerd, weird or they just don't care *shrugs*..so pen spinning is off my list of things to attract girls with, haha tongue.gif

  42. D4v3

Girls don't really care about pen spinning or how it works, how you can spin, make the tricks etc. They just care that you are the center of the atractions, and want to know what's that about. smile.gif
