Philosophy / How should one learn to spin a pen effectively?

there are many ways for people to learn and master tricks... but lets focus on fundamentals.. which is what most people needs to go thru before moving to advances..

how should one learn to spin a pen effectively? for my personal preference, i uses long pencils and learn/master the trick, then reduce the length of my pencil and eventually end up using a normal pen length.... but is this effective? some people might say its more effective to start off using a normal length pen.

what are your views? discuss below..

I just keep trying the trick with a normal length pen until the trick eventually becomes consistent.

I agree. Having long pens does help a lot but i dont do it. I have tried though and it helps a lot..

I would say start off with a normal pen.

Like me, i started with a G2 and now I mod pens and G2 feels too short.

well, i started with a normal pencil. Lol...
I think it is good to start with a normal pen first, so it won't be a habit of young long pens to spin

Have mod, watch tutorial, watch video, train, that is all.

There is no way to spin effectively... maybye how to spin non effectively like:
Learning trick in the middle of sleep, learning trick with spoon, try to learn trick just by name but dont know how to really do it, doing own tricks ( this doesnt reads when you are good, but there is not begginer who can make his new own trick...

I think that u can do whatever makes u happy,

if u get a long pencil, use it if u think it will
    help,

if u start off with a normal pen/pencil, use it
if u think it will help,

it depends on what type of penspinner u are.

i started with a highlighter, since its got
wide barrel (for charge and whatnot)

You will have to practice everyday and don't give up even when you drop your pen for over 9000 times consecutive.

Umm.. i think it's better to learn the fundamentals with a normal pen and then make pen mods to learn advanced tricks like bakfall, etc.

Exactly, Dropping the pen is part of learning how to spin it. But if you never give up, you WILL get better without fail.

My philosophy to practice is to practice well, otherwise you just practice bad habits that will inhibit your future learning.

Whenever I want to learn a new trick, i take a mod (if you can do it 100% on a mod you can do it on just about anything) and sit cross legged on my bed for hours on end (for hard tricks). Sitting low to a soft surface means that if you do drop it (which you should, otherwise your not trying to do it enough) you can pick it up really quickly and efficiently, and the soft surface doesn't make that annoying dropping sound that annoys parents.

When applicable, learn it backwards! then learn interesting combos you can do with it! then move on to the next trick! tongue.gif

try to get finger positions correct when learning stuff, it'll be hard to change it if you're used to bad position for a long time

get a number of mini combos smooth, helps with freestyles etc

learn fundamentals first, and try not to learn tricks too far ahead of your skill level

    and practice xD

originally i made a practice mod which in truth is just an unsharpned pencil with an elastic band wrapped on each end.
this means the mod is both light, well balance and gripped at the ends for infinities and weight at the ends. these in my opinion are some of the most ideal conditions for practice. i find that its harder to do most trick with a lighter mod, meaning it makes doin tricks on most other pens easier.

i use a bictory with g2 grips but at first an unsharpened pencil with 2 clear bic crystal pen caps 1 on each side with the clip steak-knifed off.

I posted in this before, so...
Start off with something light: unmodified pen/pencil, light mod, exc. No point in starting off with a Buster CYL. it'd kill your fingers.

Is it bad to use long pens? I'm using an unsharpened unmodded pencil right now and it feels more controlled than anything else I've tried. Pens feel way too short.

Generally, the longer the pen, the easier it is to spin. After about 25cm though, it gets ridiculous. Some would even argue 25cm is too long. Also, the heavier the ends, the easier it is to spin generally. Having longer pens with heavier weights on the tips will allow you to perform tricks slower than normal (not aerials, obviously--gravity cares not for your pen's mass and length). Rotational momentum is calculated by Torque/time. Torque is measured in radius times force (rF), so the higher the torque, the longer the time you can spend in one spin. (I might be wrong, but the gist of my post should be correct.) smile.gif

Anyway, to answer your question, I wouldn't say that longer pens are bad to use, but they are easier to use. There's really no shame in using one.

yeah at first i thought that to. i thought if i could get a mod i could spin better, but i still spun with regular pens and pencils and eventually i learned all my fundamentals. so just keep practicing. happy.gif

    stalking eso.

o and in order to LEARN the trick, i usually use two hands to trace the path for like...half an hour T_T
then i actually try it for another 3 hours. then what happens is either:

    a) i keep failing, get some sleep over it, and get it the next day after a bit more practice

    cool.gif get the trick.

SO, if you have no life like me, go ahead and try that method. keep in mind this only applies to anything not related to hand around tricks (haitua...) and obscure spins (spiderspin...)

no jk, it works for everything. i just suck too hard.

watch tutorials and repeat everything said or shown in the video step by step. watching the tricks in slow motion is sometimes helpful so you can see exactly how someone moves his hand or fingers and you can copy it.

  37. o.0dsrp
    Date: Mon, Jan 4 2010 00:22:13

I watch the vid a couple times, and then i use my other hand to guide the pen in my spinning hand, so i know what it feels like. Then i just keep on doing the trick over and over again in class.

  38. crinix

I watch tutorials. After learn in theory, then i try to practise it. If i can't do it, i try to do it in slow motion, i mean i move the pen slowly between my fingers or whatever. If i can't do it the trick again, then i use my other hand to see how pen moves between fingers.

Usually, just practice over and over. If I'm having trouble, a slow motion video is really all I ever use, although once or twice I've used a full video tutorial.

You just obsessively practice it for a few days, and usually you get it. It takes a lot of drive sometimes though so I suaully take a few months break in between each new trick, and I don't master it until the next year = \. But that's just me.

All i've got is videos, YouTube is like my best friend now and I thank the internet so much because without it, I think I would of never learned this amazing art.

I watch tutorials and do what I call "the flight path" on my hand assisted by my other hand. attempt to do the trick, analyze what I am doing right and wrong, fix mistakes, try again... and again, and again, and again and again. (aka practice)
