cheaper, American Dr.KT
-
Date: Sun, Sep 30 2007 02:57:57
Ok guys heres another Dr.KT substitute that me and iamk34n3 came up with that uses pens found in America and is cheaperto make. Using pentel clic grip erasers was proposed by CaliMartinio. The pen is also as customizable as a Dr.KT as far as grip scheme, body choice, and cap colors are concerned.
Dr.ST
What You Need:
-1 crayola supertip maker
-2 dr.grip tips, it doesnt matter what kind you have, they dont even have to be dr. grip tips, as long as they are heavy (papermate aspire tips)
-2 sharpie fine point caps (works better with the ones with metal clips)
-grips of choice, RECOMENDED GRIP: Pentel Clic Grip Eraser
-Somthing to secure the Dr. Grip tips on (duct tape, teflon tape, blutak/stickytak, glue)
-cutting utensils, I used pocketknife and wirecutters
1. start off by decliping the sharpie caps as seen in the pic, it seems that newer sharpies have a plastic clip that you just have to break off. You will be cutting that section off anyways
Spoiler:
2. cut the plastic around the nub on the sharpie caps. If you have the sharpie with metal clips you will want to cut it about where the little holes are where the clip was(~1cm ). Look at the pic. If you cut the nub by accident, just hope your grips will hold the tips on or use glue.
Spoiler:
3. Wrap tape around the nub to thicken it and teflon tape over that so you can screw your tips right onto the cap securely or you can glue them on)
Spoiler:
4. Screw on your tips and put a grip over. It should be very secure. Tight fitting grips arent necessary. You can cut Pentel clic grips the same way as sailors (8,2,2,3) Repeat for second cap
Spoiler:
5. Take the cap off the supertip you dont need it) and pull out the backplug and remove the ink leaving you with a nice empty barrel.
Spoiler:
6. Put your caps on. How far they go down is up to you. Pushing them down all the way will give you a mod the same length as a Dr.KT give or take .5 cm. Platic clip sharpies will make the mod 1cm longer
Final Product

looks nice but requires 2 Dr. Grips, quite a lot of money ;p for an asain
-
Date: Sun, Sep 30 2007 03:08:16
Yea theres just no getting around those Dr.Grip tips. Costs from the original Dr.KT have been cut substantially by not using Kt's and sailor gels. Other tips of similar weight do exist but are less common and hard to get a hold of. No real point in me naming them.

Very nice! Should appease many north american spinners who cant trade to get dr.KT's
And just a random fact, supertip bodies have a diameter 0.37mm +1mm wider than keityo. So anyone making this should not expect an exact replica of a dr.KT. The two will still feel different when spun. -

that's large enough for a g2 tip body part new mod idea incoming? -

Wow what a nice mod. I think i will try that when I have time X].
One question, where do u suppose I can get the crayola marker? I never seen that type of marker before -
Date: Sun, Sep 30 2007 03:49:57
I think this mod should be called the Dr. USA.
-
Date: Sun, Sep 30 2007 03:58:05
Supertips are pretty common, you can get them at walmart or staples in packs of 24 for 3 or 4 dollars. Some have white bodies and others have black
-
Date: Sun, Sep 30 2007 04:02:56
I wonder if you could get this mod in Australia.
I've seen sharpies around ad I think I can get Dr. Grips. Not sure about the crayola though. -
Date: Sun, Sep 30 2007 04:18:24
Sharpie caps just happen to fit nicely over rsvp bodies. just put on right over the backcap and one over the front. Youll have to tinker around to get it balanced tho but it means clear body!
-
Date: Sun, Sep 30 2007 04:22:01
lol, K4S is getting hammered over that zebra extended mod.
-
Date: Sun, Sep 30 2007 04:25:38

I already knew this but what you end up with is a really really short dr.KT substitute. Besides, ive already found the perfect clear body for a dr.KT substitute -
Date: Sun, Sep 30 2007 05:56:14
looks nice. man i'm starting to spend some time in pen mod threads.
now i have 2 new pens to make: this one, and K4S's mechanical pencil mod. -

-

BUT! The sharpies will dry out! And I need those to tag with!
Nice idea man. -

nice mod!
-a note to uk spinners:
crayola supertips in the uk are different from the USA ones... from what i can tell anyway. maybe there's more than one type. anyway, be warned and i'll investigate further. -
Date: Sun, Sep 30 2007 19:50:50
wow, this mod looks very nice.
i'll make it as soon as i find a dr grip. -

To be honest, there is no real replacement for dr. grip tips. You could use signo tips but they are no where as heavy as the dr.grips. As for the grips, most people use profiles. -
Date: Mon, Oct 1 2007 13:52:30
Great, another Dr. to add to my collection lol.
-

Nice found!
I like the pen in the first post more than the normal Dr.KT....
Looks like i have to trade on the nexxt time^^
see ya -

Is the white barrel thicker or fatter than the black one? Looks a lot fatter and feels way to fat. Here's a pic:

Seems awesome. If i can scrounge up the parts ill make it asap!
-
Date: Tue, Oct 2 2007 15:34:52
not a bad alternative, the weird thing with the supertips is there are 2-3 different versions which can make or break this mod. One is the back plug that goes over the rim of the barrel(don't have pics atm srry). so that makes the caps stretch over it making it a rather unstable mod(same apply to Keicho caps). The other kind which I found was more common in the late 90's are just a plug, no covering the rim of the barrel and a slightly longer tip fronting. Allowing to seamlessly put KT/Sharpie caps on. There is another version of it, I havent seen it, but it just has a longer out of barrel plug from what I've heard. hope that answered some questions
-

Honestly, I dont see why you would want to make the mod any heavier but you could just put in paper, an inktube, blue tack etc.
And in my mod I removed the backplug entirely so versions of supertip with different backplugs shouldnt matter. Just grip with pliers and pull hard. -
Date: Tue, Oct 2 2007 23:04:41
Hmm.. I just tried putting the Sharpie caps on a Supertip, and I put them all the way on. ITS TINY! For the front side of the Supertip, I have to put the cap all the way on, or it doesn't stay. On the back, I don't need to put it all the way on, but the pen is still really short...
-
Date: Fri, Oct 5 2007 04:51:16
i just put the sharpie caps over both ends of a RSVP. idk if its the same length but it feels alright.
-
Date: Fri, Oct 5 2007 12:40:29
funny you should say that, i did the same thing!
what i did is take an rsvp body with the grip still on and put these modded caps on the back and front. but because the cap the has the grip inside it is heavier then a cap with just and rsvp backplug, i took the back cap and stuck an HGG tip and a ball of paper in and voila! i had it perfectly balenced! -
Date: Sun, Oct 7 2007 05:25:50
Dayum! My friend has some of those super tips, and i was at her house like a couple of days ago!
i shoulda grabbed some...nah -

Seriously, just go buy some. Supertips are super cheap.
-
Date: Sun, Oct 7 2007 05:38:04
pholord, i have a sharpie fine tip cap,
i can't find the nub that u point out.
can u explain this part a little more? -
Date: Sun, Oct 7 2007 06:36:29
If you look down into the top of the sharpir cap theres this little thing that sicks out in the center, kinda like a comssa cap. What you want to do is not cut straight through the cap but cut the plastic around it so you keep the little nub. Hope this explains it a bit better.

Hey
EDIT:
And are these the right crayola super tips?
I edited the post, is this sharpie correct? -
Date: Sat, Oct 27 2007 02:32:48
@yam: look at the first post. The Sharpie caps are flat on top, not rounded. Those are wrong. The Supertips are correct.
Edit: yeah, those are correct. -

Yea wat you have now is exactly what you need.

Too late, SubParSpinner introduced the double-capped Supertip as a Comssa mod replacement in 2005. -

Looks good and all the materials are easy to get.
Next time you might want to turn on your macro option so your photos aren't so blurry. -

Are you talking about the marker itself, or the pen mod.
If the marker, I'd like to know what you used it for.
If the mod, I'd like to know where you posted the mod. -
Date: Sun, Nov 11 2007 03:00:34
the marker.. zest made it and he gave me his extra supertips so i made his mod
-
Date: Sun, Nov 11 2007 04:24:03
Yea ok its great that all you guys "discovered" the supertip and all 3 years back or whatever, but this thread is about the Dr.ST mod, not about the first guy to use a supertip. In fact, the supertip is not really the important part of this mod. Its the sharpie caps that make this mod what it is because they can fit over many pen bodies nicely such as rsvp.
and yes pics were taken with my phone -
Date: Sun, Nov 11 2007 04:31:53
If pinoynoy made the mod a year ago, I would like to know about it, and if he posted it publically anywhere. That's what I'm trying to get at.
-
Date: Sun, Nov 11 2007 04:38:10
i didnt use sharpie caps tho
-
Date: Sun, Nov 11 2007 04:54:24
Oh.
What did you use then? They can be listed as possible substitute parts....maybe. -
Date: Sun, Nov 11 2007 22:13:34
What is the length of the pen?
I'm actually going over to buy another Dr. Grip today for my mod.
And I was thinking about making this mod instead of the length is long enough.
My mod is nothing big, built off the ballsign mod. Probably done plenty of times. -
Date: Sun, Nov 11 2007 23:02:33
Very nice! I never thought of using the marker body witht he shapie caps as replacements for comssa parts.
Should be a little cheaper than a Dr. KT I think.... -

box product of the supertip marker?
i cant seem to find one at a target =/ -

-
Date: Sun, Nov 18 2007 22:04:44
if you want a clear one that you can put inserts in, just use an rsvp with 2 back caps, i might look weird with the sharpie caps on it but its worth it.
-

to get the back plug out, i took out the marker tip and jammed one of those metal shish kabob sticks down it (the hole made from taking off the marker tip) to get the plug and ink-thingy out...i would suggest doing it over a sink though ~_~ -

On the close up picture of the cap I used an anyball grip. On the final pic its a no name grip. But really it doesnt matter what you use. You can even use g2 if you want. Just use what is available to you and what you think looks best

I don't think it was clear enough, plus the pictures were blurry as hell. Here are the "nubs" pholord was talking about.

acctually, there are 2 versions with metal clips. i have them both and one does indeed have the knubs. but the other one does not. unless the other one is an older model or something... -
Date: Sun, Apr 20 2008 04:37:32
Also the ones with the plastic clip have
like a embossed sharpie logo. Its kinda annoying
so I always use the ones with metal clips
on my STs -
Date: Sun, Apr 20 2008 05:53:16
It can still be done with plastic clip sharpies, but metal clip is much better because the nub is longer and theres no logo.
-
Date: Sun, Apr 20 2008 06:28:34
The caps I used have the plastic clips with the Sharpie logo.
The caps with the metal clips seemed not to fit as well as the ones with the plastic clips...but that's just me
But like Guitrum said, there's two versions of the caps with the metal clips so there might be one that fits onto the Supertips as well as the caps with the plastic clips.
EDIT: Whoops. Mixed up the caps. My bad -

You should cut a little bit off the front so that you can stick a chopstick or something inside. Then you just poke the back plug out with some force.

No, since American Dr. Grip tips are lighter than Japanese Dr. Grip tips.QUOTE (RH @ May 6 2009, 08:44 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>is it jsut me or is there very little spin space on this
It's just you. The spinning space on this mod is almost the same if not equivalent to a Dr. KT. -

essentially, none. you only need the grips, so you can sub them for profiles/anyballs/grips of your choice -

What? Yes they can be used as subs but you aren't making a true dr. st then...
If you want one that looks like the pic, you will need 3. 1 skyblue, 1 black, and 1 pink.
You can do it with 2 erasers though but you won't have those black stripes and you won't have to cut the grips either.
So it depends how you want to arrange your grips. -

Key word is recommended. Also notice the phrase "grips of choice" -

Err but the other guy was asking about how man erasers you use to make one? So he wanted to know HOW MANY ERASERS...

and then I replied essentially none.
If you want to continue this, pm me, otherwise, let's stop trashing the thread plzkthx -

Alright:
Essentially none. But just saying you could have told the guy that he could use 2 or 3 in addition to what you said about the sub... Maybe cover both sides? -

can anyone show me a pic of how the sharpie cap should look after you cut the plastic because the pic in the tut is not there :/
EDIT: well i finished the mod but it seems that when you put the sharpie cap on the back of the supertip, it becomes really tight, is this suppose to happen? just want to make sure -

No the tip will have a lot less weight compared to regular Dr. grips
Im surprised this thread still gets revived from time to time considering how there are a lot more Dr. KT substitutes out there compared to when this tutorial was made. I dont have the pics anymore so i cant reupload them but if anyone else still wants to make this pen and needs help just PM me. -
Date: Sun, May 9 2010 21:31:19QUOTE (pholord @ Sep 29 2007, 08:08 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Yea theres just no getting around those Dr.Grip tips. Costs from the original Dr.KT have been cut substantially by not using Kt's and sailor gels. Other tips of similar weight do exist but are less common and hard to get a hold of. No real point in me naming them.
In the U.S, one Dr. Grip pencil is about 4-5 dollars.QUOTE (en814 @ Sep 29 2007, 08:45 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Wow what a nice mod. I think i will try that when I have time X].

Crayola supertip markers are very cheap and common in the U.S. You can find them just about anywhere.
