UPSB v3
Philosophy / Pen spinning
Informal name?
-
Date: Mon, Sep 29 2008 11:28:16
I think that to call what we do as pen spinning is kinda informal. I mean, other stuff has proper names like table tennis.
Informal name: Ping-pong
Formal name: Table tennis.
Imagine.. someone asks you.. What's your hobby.. and you say: Pen spinning..
They'll be thinking that you mean doing the TA or the charge and they'll think you have no life but then again.. it's because they don't know about this like they might know about soccer and basketball etc..
What do you think? -
Date: Mon, Sep 29 2008 11:42:21
thats actually happened to me before
i cant figure out what a good formal name would be though
but i love the idea -
Date: Mon, Sep 29 2008 11:51:58
If you're calling 'pen spinning' informal then how would a more formal name make you seem like you have more of a life? It'd probably make it seem more foreign to someone who hasn't heard of it.

don't worry. pen spinning sounds more formal than yo-yoing

Date: Mon, Sep 29 2008 13:12:42

C = cool
P = people

Pen spinning is just blatantly stating what you do. Table tennis is basically tennis on a table and pen spinning is when you spin a pen.There's nothing wrong with that. Besides, you wouldn't exactly call it TUMOSAP... That stands for:
T = The
U = Unique
M = Motion
O = Of
S = Spinning
A = A
P = Pen
That would be a mouthful and chances are, they would probably fall asleep halfway through explaining it... -
Date: Wed, Oct 1 2008 07:44:26
wel if you say it table tennis = tennis on table
so then pen spinning = spinning a pen
so we dont need one -
Date: Wed, Oct 1 2008 20:20:06
"Object manipulation", then you say "Pens mainly"

yeah,
and what's wrong with pen spinning
okay, it's not exactly just "spinning", but if you call it manipulation then you could call writing with a pen a manipulation too O_o
and if you want to be to exact then it takes too long to explain...
so it's just pen spinning (informal: psing, spinning...) -
Date: Tue, Jan 27 2009 20:23:59
I personality think pen spinning or pen manipulation is good enough.
-
Date: Tue, Jan 27 2009 22:51:20
Contact juggling with pens. That is technically what penspinning is. You could probably word it better, but that's the idea.
-

Pen Juggling
But it's not that different from pen spinning... not that there's anything wrong with it to begin with... -
Date: Thu, Jan 29 2009 00:46:17

what i hate most is when people call pen spinning "pencil twirling". it pisses me off so much. but i agree with Dev in that pen manuplation sounds better then pen spinning ^^
-
Date: Thu, Feb 12 2009 07:10:21
uh... pen spinning makes the most sense.. because that is all that we are doing.
Spinning= moving in a circular motion in space.
about 95% of penspinning tricks involve a circular motion, whether it be vertical like a charge, or on a horizontal plane like a shadow... -
Date: Wed, Feb 18 2009 15:46:24
I still think that TAODMAWUTOFQAS should be it.

contact juggling = all kinds of 'pen' spinning
pen spinning = spinning with actual pens (no buster CYLs or other non-writable pens)
---
I was spinning a non-writable object once, and someone asked what I was doing. I said 'pen spinning', and the person said "wow, that's one weird pen. how does it write?". I had a hard time explaining that you don't actually have to have a pen to spin a pen. This made me think: "now why is spinning sticks still called pen spinning?"
---
^^
Why we couldn't have 'pen' in the formal name -
Date: Wed, Feb 18 2009 22:45:38QUOTE (G.lanz @ Feb 18 2009, 11:54 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>contact juggling = all kinds of 'pen' spinningContact juggling is too general a term. Contact juggling is just a form of object manipulation in which the object stays in pretty much constant contact with juggler's body, so penspinning is really just a form of contact juggling. As far as the stick/pen thing is concerned, everything is made from pen parts, and can almost always be made writable, so that doesn't really matter IMO.

Pen manipulation seems best for formal, penspinning for informal.
