General Discussion / Most influential spinners

I'm pretty sure there was one of these back in ucpsb, but let's make one anyways.
mine are probably:
1) lunasol
2) asian tim
3) sunrise
although there aren't too many traces of lunasol's spinning in my spinning today, i wouldn't have gotten to where i am today without him. -

do you mean the spinners who affect and influence your spinning?
if you mean that, its bonkura and fratleym and x1213.
bonkura more than the rest. too bad he's no longer around. -

NHK_9, Zombo and Bonkura for me.
NHK cause he could do some cool shit with a pen, and not just any pen, that was one light mofo that he managed to do all those tricks with. He's my favourite spinner.
Zombo, not because of his videos, but I really like the tricks that he invented, plus, Zombo is (indexspin and counters rock)
And Bonkura because of his creativity, and his ability to be the most creative in the world, and not let his speed, smoothness, difficulty, etc be effected by it. -

kam -> invented many tricks, focus on smoothness in combos. his NeoBak combo is the origin of the BakFall.
david weis -> inventor of backaround
nhk_9 -> development of the backaround family, continuous combos, very difficult linkages
tohlz -> precursor of the Korean style of spinning. development of body spinning.
Hideaki Kondoh. -> First PS website, many learned from him. -

for me, i have to say
David Weis>I began with a pencil. I learned half my tricks from his tutorials/book of cool.
Kam>upgraded me to the MX and had Pentrix which is where I went after I found David Weis
Bonkura>jack be nimble, jack be quick, Bonkura pwned me with a chop stick. His creativity of tricks was untouchable, i can't even begin to describe my praise for this man. RIP dude. -

pretty interesting topic IMO
mmmh I would say i was first inspired by A_Qui
then I got 4 big sources of inspiration.
- Bonkura: all the work he did in flexing fingers and that I try to keep on today...
- Key3: He brought a lot on the work with thumb linkages and linkages in overview, creative-as-hell spinner
- Eriror: work on smoothness, skills, and our conversations has brought me so many ideas...
- Taeryong : his work on perfect spinning and skills with thumb, his use of linkage, passes and Around are just the best ever. -

Regarding the spinners that have been most effectual overall, to the entire penspinning community, the choices are pretty clear, and Zombo's already put my thoughts down.
As for the spinners that have influenced me personally:
I have to give a huge nod to Cloud Traveler (Pendolsa). Just such an unbelievable all around spinner. And incredibly prolific, tons of videos of him floating around. He manages to do stuff no one has ever seen before with existing tricks (Can anyone else do a perfect midbak 1.5 cont?).
Leo (from penzone). His first solo blew my mind. And his stuff in the world tournament was absolutely nuts. Just an insane technical spinner.
Fingerpass, Cheukii, Morse, Saipan, and to a certain extent pentaenge (I haven't seen much of him besides his solo) show such blinding technical ability in every combo. All the technical masters make me want to practice all the fundamentals until I can make them look as effortless as they do. -

Kam > All... This guy made PS what it is today!
Bonkura kicks ass too, but Kam's always been my main influence -
Date: Thu, Oct 4 2007 19:40:26
Kam, David Weis and Bonkura were influential to me...all for numerous reasons.
-

I cant just choose a few spinners. The truth is, all spinners have influenced me is some way. I know it says most, but I cant just choose a few.

Personally...
Kam & Tohlz -- their sites showed me the majority of the early tricks that I learned.
Moogoogaipan -- same as above, to a lesser degree.
kaisen -- he was the first spinner that I paid attention to for smoothness and longer combos. I would still watch his Turtlespin promo vid...if I still had it.
David Weis -- I'm pretty sure that I don't even need to say why.
fratleym -- I still haven't seen anyone who moves the pen around the hand like he does. -

Woah. Didn't expect my name in here. Maybe because i couldn't really imagine how infulencial i could be..
I mean my combos are all the same.
But yes.
Influencial to me would be...
*Fallen and Toast for starters. Just because I used them for competition when i started which made me motivated/inspired to keep up with them.
*Eriror-If it wasen't for you, I wouldn't like arounds as much as i do now.
*bonkura-made me realize that you don't really need difficult tricks to make a combo look good and also to try not to compete with other spinners on who can get a better combo in or who can make a more difficult combo, but to show the beauty of the combo. Its how you make it. -
Date: Thu, Oct 4 2007 22:02:35
it's just amazing how you can make simple combos look amazing now matter how many times they're performed
-
Date: Thu, Oct 4 2007 23:32:02
Ahhh Ok i get it now.
Thats what i practice pretty much.
I don't sit there and practice hard tricks.(well maybe sometimes )
Instead I do tricks and incorporate everything to make it look awesome.
I try to move my fingers the right way, Use wrist motion with the motion of the pen, keep center with the pen, twisting my hand from face down to back up, the pen effect against the background, lighting, and filming. -
Date: Thu, Oct 4 2007 23:42:30
Damn, honestly I would say Asian Tim now...
Simply because he's good enough to have his name
mentioned here in such a thread after having only been PSing for
a just over a year !!! I'm going to try to work to
get that good... -

I don't suppose this is the video you're talking about? It was one of the first I saw as well, but since he did stuff I wouldn't do in class (body moves, behind the back, etc), I didn't think too much of it I only wanted to learn what I could reasonably due during school.
I never forgot it though, and now that I watch it again, yeah, he's crazy. Especially for his time. -

Just started pen spinning not for long... So, I don't know any famous pen spinners. But, the one who influence me to aim to become a professional spinner is Eso.
I saw a lot videos of ps tutorial, but its hard for me to catch. It just so happen that I saw Eso's vid, his tutorial is GREAT! Got to thank him a lot for helping me find a new hobby XD -

No question about it... ^^
The most influential penspinner in the world is... Bonkura.
- Triangle Pass.
- Pass Arounds.
- String Combos.
- Invisible pen / I Sonic.
- And flexible fingers. -

The ones that have influenced me most are to start with Yiep, who got me into PSing and whose smooth fingermovements I think I have adapted quite a lot. Secondly Ceedgee for getting me to do all those Shadows I wasn't able to do any good before, and now do awesomely all the time. Lastly bonkura, for the charge-pass-clip tricks and fingermovements I use now and then in combos. A lot of people talk about more "ledgendary" spinners, but since I have not been around for more then one-one and a half year I have never seen these people spin (or atleast not a lot), so they have not influenced how I spin at all (ofcourse they have subconciously, through all the trick they have invented and developed).

Bonkura: i showed interest in ps because of his video
Kam: Pentrix. the site that actually got me into ps
Zombo: i don't think upsb would work if he didn't exist
Eriror: after seeing some of his vid, i realised psing can be so kool and i got serious into ps (Last Month) -
Date: Sat, Oct 6 2007 14:48:39
Kaisen - His video inspired me a lot when I was first starting out. Plus he's a lefty.
Kam - His Superhandz video was one of the first videos that got me hooked on PSing. That's it. I only used a few of his tutorials and I broke away from him.
sketching - I remember reading his posts on UPSB v2 and he's a lefty. Very nice guy.
aysh - I learned some things from him, but not a whole lot. He's also a lefty, so I learned easier from him.
bonkura - Nuff said.
Eriror - Not only his skill, but his personality influenced me as well.
Zombo - I don't like his spinning, but his personality influenced me a lot.
toast - I used to hate this fool, but now we're cool. I find his spinning very influential on me. He's my ... benchmark or something.
RandomNewb - As much as I don't want to admit this, he influenced me as well. He motivated me when I was down on my spinning.
Leviathan - I remember his battle vid against Michael (or patte?). Made me want to master Cont. Shadows.
lunasol - One of my PS buddies back in the day.
There's tons more that influenced me one way or another. -
Date: Sat, Oct 6 2007 15:34:51
Kam: I learned all of my first tricks by watching his videos.
Bonkura: crazy linkage and creativity.
Eriror: really good speed and flow. -
Date: Sat, Oct 6 2007 16:11:43
KAM : hiss vid hooked me in pen spinning....
Eriror : i stole his style
bonkura : teached me how master FIngerpass and ThumbAround to Air -
Date: Sat, Oct 6 2007 16:18:58
At first, whoever made the site at illivatar (or something like that) cos that's the first site on stumbled on.
Kam, cos without him I would never have gone on from there to Pentrix and then UPSB and probably would have learnt very little of pen spinning.
Kaisen - His solo vid was greatly inspirational to me on UPSB, as was 'Vortex'
Patte - For his part in Vortex
NHK/Tohlz - These guys were always my favourites to watch and kept me interested
Phya - All around awesome guy. UPSB aint quite the same without him
Lordbojo - His antics on UPSB probably helped to keep me there!
Lastly, Zombo - Without him we might not have all this now, and I guess I would have quit already. -

@Mats: Patrick Szeto made the Pencil Spinning section on Iluvitar.com. Thanks for reminding me about him, I can't believe I forgot about that site! He was another who's website I first came across and whose text desriptions I read over and over while learning the Fundamentals. His website introduced me to the Thumb Snap, I love that trick.

Maniok > Favourite Spinner, I love his vids
Robert > Second Penspinner to make me go =OOOOOOO
Le0n > First Penspinner i saw and he got me into it
Bonkura > He has advanced penspinning in so many ways
Kam > First American spinner I heard of, inventor of RSVP MX
Eso > Made many many many many many many good and helpful tutorial videos
Zombo > Made the Counter TA and i thought i had made a new trick when i did it... ah well, it was the first trick i could do on my left hand and started off my combo Counter TA > Pass 12-23 > Sonic 23-12 repeat
EDIT 1:
K4S > His shiny LED pens made me happy
Eriror > The Exciting Hyper Highspeed Star music to his video was like OMFG HOW COOL IS THIS!

QFT. This is how I see them:
Kam: highly influential, a pioneer not only in PS but in creating a community around it.
David Weis: way ahead of his time, he single-handedly expanded the trick database.
nhk_9: his style paralleled Weis's, and took it to new heights.
tohlz: he explored different variations and concepts, challenging convention.
Hideaki Kondoh - the modern founder of PS...what more can I say?
