Use this thread to discuss the general concept of this project, what needs to be done (brainstorm), request new topics and consolidate topics results. This is the general thread for the whole project.
Name: Dynamic Pen Mods
Project Leader: Eburt
Description: A dynamic pen would be defined as a pen that changes. These pens would be mods that are altered by various circumstances and therefore lend themselves to different styles very well.
Why?: By creating mods like this a person might decide to bring only one pen instead of three or four, and can also work on things they werem't planning on with ease. This is a more scientific approach to modding that should make spinning easier.
Example: A simple example would be a pen that had slots for weights to be attached to the ends. This would allow the PSer to modify the weight properties at any time. This is also a bad example though, as it requires the modder to carry weights with them and also would likely take a while to change the mod.

I presented a kind of dynamic pen mod prototype on youtube at the time this topic was up on UCPSB...Now, I just have finalized an evoluved version of it, so I'm gonna try to find time to present the concept. Basically, I made some kind of retractable MX, retractable for spinning, not for writing.

with the ZT mod now out and beign a good first step for this project, is there any way to augment it or take knowledge from it to build somethign else?

You can, all you really need is those slim barrels, you can get the silver part out, then just create a stopper on each end of the pen. It's not all that difficult, but it would take a good amount of work to say make an extendable KT or something. Practical use in MX type mods are probably not going to be the best to start with on this project. -

UPDATE: I finally have gotten a working prototype of a Dynamic-Weight-Distribution system down.
The system is fairly basic. (Using a basic G3MX² base)
1.) A Single Spring Rests at the base(like a retractable would work)
2.) A 10lb Fishing line is tied from end to end (string being pulled to tighten then wrapped through the front.
3.) A (2)g metal bead is pushed onto the string resting on the bottom spring
4.) Inside the G3 Cap a Small Screw has the fishing line tied to it
5.) A Spring is inserted into the cap and glued onto the screw
6.) The bead one I made from metal sauter that was formed into a hollow bead and then weighed/filed
When the pen begins to spin the bead goes into the cap and puts pressure on the backspring, when the counter trick is done, the pen stops and that pressure pushes the bead towards the center. That in turn then hits the bottom spring which then pushes momentum onto the bead during the counter trick. Once the pen goes back into momentum, that pressure releases and pushes it towards the backspring.
Right now it's a rough working concept, but it's a start. I'll keep this section posted as I go about perfecting it. -

What kind of spring do you use? It seems like you'd really have to spin a pen fast to get enough centrifugal to compress a regular pen spring.

For the time being I'm using profile springs, they are quite flexible.
I still need to figure out what will work the best. -

how does it react in combos with very fast direction changes

It reacts is all I can say lol. Trying to do like a faster-paced Korean combo can be a little odd to get used too. I can't protest the effectiveness of that since I don't spin fast-korean style. For my style which is a decently passed european style it works efficiently for the most part. I still need to test softer/harder springs. -

Hi, I think the most effective way to manage something like this is precise control of the location of the weight (with a spring you're bound to have all kinds of strange vibrations and their harmonics bouncing around as you spin)
the best way to do this would be electronics, here is a very low power motor that can fit inside the pen and move your CG with relatively fast response (10mm per second)

The only downside is its expensive.

Physical state changing mods for instanSe a limp slash rope like mod that when piled or pushed or realigned becomes stiff?...
Or a semi Bendedible mod bent in ways lending to new tricks or alternative involving folding the pen with the fingers either as folds themselves or in a combo bent so that another tick can be done after?...
