Philosophy / Is It Right To Spin The Pen?
In class or where people are trying to work...
-
Date: Wed, Oct 10 2007 08:09:34
Should we be spinning pens in places in which other people are trying to work? For instance, if you're spinning your pen for a class, and making one drop per minute, that is a lot of distraction to the rest of the class! Is the pleasure you gain from spinning a pen in class worth causing that distraction to the rest of the class? You might get a lot of fun out of spinning your pen, but 20 or 30 other people might get a lot of pain from it. Is it right to spin the pen in these situations?

If someone is annoyed or distracted they just have to tell me. I have absolutely no problems stoping to spin if someone wants me to.

However, you do start to spin without asking. You therefore assume if someone wants you to stop they will have the nerve to ask you to (stop). You assume that if people are getting annoyed by it, they will tell you. A dangerous assumption. You could be causing pain to many people who just don't tell you it is annoying them!
Is that right to do? -

i spin on my lap so there is no noise, and i rarely drop since it also annoys me to keep picking up my pen in a public place. i do stuff i've sort of mastered to practice smoothness.
so that takes of the dropping irritation of my spinning. and if they find my spinning visually distracting, screw them.
if people can mess with their PSPs in public, why can't we spin our pens?
if it's a class and the teacher asks me to stop, i don't mind, since it may be distracting. but if i'm sitting in a public train or bus and someone tells me to stop, i won't even bother trying. -
Date: Wed, Oct 10 2007 09:11:29
Before, because everyone found spinning visually annoying, people in my class had the right 2 take me and blugyblugs pens if we PSed too much
-
Date: Wed, Oct 10 2007 17:15:23
it's not wrong to spin a pen but you shouldn't annoy people...
-
Date: Wed, Oct 10 2007 20:57:44
I choose not to care... Last guy that asked me to stop spinning got a leigun straight to the pupil.
-
Date: Wed, Oct 10 2007 21:30:38
is it really such a philosophical question?
it's not right to annoy people obviously, but it's easy to spin without annoying people around you.. so there ya go.. -
Date: Thu, Oct 11 2007 02:25:50
my friends don't mind but spinning pen annoys my teacher ALOT! but that's the fun
-
Date: Thu, Oct 11 2007 03:52:13
hehehe... "Is It Right To Spin The Pen?" took the words out of my mouth... i have to say that if they get anoyed by the click clack sound of it when it falls then, TOO BAD! lol PS is an art, a way of meditation, is our connection with the pen/pencil itself... what i do is do tricks avobe my lap, so if it falls it falls in my lap... most of the time...
and to answear the question: yes, its right to make sounds that it falls... that way people notice how good you are when you master that trick heheh -
Date: Thu, Oct 11 2007 05:32:16
i try to do tricks that i know i wont drop like TA harmonics, sonics, ect.
but everyonce in a wihle i'll try a bakfall. -
Date: Thu, Oct 11 2007 07:38:58
I don't think it's about right or wrong, it's about is respecting other people, and caring about what they think or not. I often don't care, which eventually leads to problems, but they're well worth it.

Is it wrong to spin a pen and annoy people?
Ask yourself this.
Is it wrong to annoy the Pen Spinner by saying that they are annoying you?
Either way, there are those who have the willpower and concentration to know when it's time to work and time to spin and time to work and time to be amazed by the spinner
And also, PS helps me to concentrate on my work, like when i subconciously do TA Harmonic or charge until my fingers ache, if other people are distracted, let them find their own way to concentrate, at the end of the day, it's their grades that are falling, not mine -
Date: Mon, Oct 15 2007 02:32:23
lol i vote best explaination to kalcite. i agree it helps me concentrate in class but i stop when someone asks me but thats only happened once when i was learning the thumbaround harmonic.
-
Date: Mon, Oct 15 2007 02:38:27
if im dropping the pen, and thats distracting them, ill stop. without them telling me.
if its visually distracting them, screw them. Unless its the teacher, cuz then she'll confiscate it x(
also, i have special sponge grips that wiegh next to nothing that i put on the tips of my pens when im practicing tricks in class that i havent mastered yet. Unless its dead silent in the room, no one can even hear me dropping it. -
Date: Mon, Oct 15 2007 03:35:37QUOTE (t3tsubo @ Oct 14 2007, 07:38 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>if its visually distracting them, screw them. Unless its the teacher, cuz then she'll confiscate it x(
Nah that's just an urban pen spinning myth, teachers will never confiscate a pen because it's a writing utensil -
Date: Mon, Oct 15 2007 03:57:00
It's kind of disrespectful though. Teachers are trying to teach. In Bangkok, just not looking at them could piss them off.
-
Date: Mon, Oct 15 2007 05:11:47
Dropping the pen make's a lot of distraction especially to somebody doing work, yes that's true , but for me, it is not wrong to spin pen wherever you are , but to make respect to anybody doing work, by make sure that before you spin you already mastered the combo or trick before you do it anywhere....so you can't distract somebody.
Me before i spin, I usually use my bag and i put it on the top of the table, so when the pen fall it can't make noise. -
Date: Mon, Oct 15 2007 07:49:41
If its an important test, I'll stop... but if its some stupid revision ill just spin for the fun of it... and maybe other people.
But yeah, if people think its 'visualy distracting' i dont care, ill just keep spinning. -
Date: Mon, Oct 15 2007 07:52:45
lol then we should go to the "dedicated" spinning class with mrs stevens blugyblug
-
Date: Thu, Oct 18 2007 02:00:27
I've had teachers tell me to stop because instead of the class paying attention to her they were watching me spin. But for the most part after a while people get used to it. For the first week or so in my classes people were amazed then the effect wears off and people deem it as an everyday thing.
-

i just spin in an working area if i dont drop. after 2 or 3 drops i stop spinnig. at least for a few minutes
-

I actually had a teacher tell me to stop because it was distracting her, and she had a hard time focusing because she kept looking back and seeing me spin.
I think it's alright to spin wherever you are, just as long as you aren't causing problems by it. Then... you should be respectful and hold it lower where it isn't distracting ^.^ -
Date: Mon, Oct 22 2007 23:42:03
My point of view:
things are only distracting when people pay attention to them -
Date: Sat, Oct 27 2007 16:15:46
well, if it doesn fall den it is ok aftr all.
-
Date: Sat, Oct 27 2007 17:49:59
i sit with my legs sticking out from under the chair like point at the next row of chairs
so when i drop it lands on my lap making no noiseQUOTEpeople deem it as an everyday thing.
i wish they did -
Date: Sun, Oct 28 2007 03:32:29
I think spinning is ok even though it might be visually distracting so SCREW THEM , but if I have to pay attention to a important test or review for a test or such then i put my pen down and listen. Mostly though it's about timing. In this I mean you have to know when to spin and when not to. For example, if we're checking homework, doing a group project, listening to a nonrelated subject and such then it's ok to sping, but if a test is going on then I dont want to be a disturbance to others and let them do there work to do the best they can. Remember it's all about the timing and knowing the maturity to know when to stop .
-
Date: Mon, Oct 29 2007 12:07:25
i think it should be okay as long as you don't drop it. it's not that distracting is it? well we caan say we're exercising their abitily to focus..
THe only time i care is durind exams and things especially government exams i make sure i only do one tricks continuously like fingerpass so i don't drop it or get suspected of cheating -
Date: Mon, Oct 29 2007 18:12:04
I find that people in my classes are not annoyed
sometimes when I look around I will se like 10 other people "trying" to spin
I am also careful not to drop the pen on my desk. Ill push my chair back so if the
pen falls it lands in my lap. -
Date: Mon, Nov 5 2007 17:03:42
Yeah, if someone actually gets pissed off at you, then stop spinning, if they don't say anything, why assume it bothers them? Many people I know have annoying class habits that are in no way constructive...
-
Date: Thu, Nov 15 2007 03:55:37
First of all, only spin tricks during class IF you have mastered them, or make it so that you almost NEVER drop it.
My teacher is completely okay with me spinning, but if I drop it 3 or 4 times when she's teaching, she might give me a detention, or throw away my pen which SUCKS. (I usually bring my best pens to school) -
Date: Mon, Nov 19 2007 14:22:56
Just don't drop the pen^^ If a trick is still to hard you should first train it at home. Other people (teachers, co-worker) won't tolerate a continuous dropping pen (i can tell from my own experience)
-
Date: Mon, Nov 19 2007 20:10:12
some of my teachers find it interesting, they don't say it though, i just notice them looking at me ps-ing. and one teacher did tell me to stop (because it was constantly falling), and i did, but then i dropped pen while i was writing and whole class gave me 'that look'. i was just "it was an accident"
-
Date: Mon, Nov 19 2007 20:43:42
All the teachers hate it, because whole close does psing at the "little hobby" level where they just repeat TA or sonic etc. But I invented amazing thing I put my jacket on my legs so it prevents the pen from making sound. I have good grips which actually don't make much noise even if it does fall on ground. If it's lesson where I can't do that from some reason, I just do easy tricks so the pen doesn't fall
And about annoying people, well, some people get annoyed just by the pen spinning itself, so if anyone does (except teacher ) I stop doing it and never do it when I am near him.. I don't want to annoy people
But yesterday I had stupid accident, my Infinity release smashed one girl in face... sorry sandra
So.. well.. just really try not to make sound, because I don't really think people get annoyed just by the pen (although some say so), I think then it is ok -
Date: Mon, Nov 19 2007 21:21:01
aaa, infinity. that flyes a lot.
but teachers and students find modified pens very interesting. it's not everyday thing that you see 20cm long pen, with super grips and perfect weight balance
but noise is the biggest problem, I always keep something on my table (notebook at least, even though as a h2g2 fan i should have my towel with me ). and when it releases accidentally. luckily I sit in a first row so it doesn't hit anyone -

Too bad no teacher ever shown ANY interest in pen spinning. It's weird though - I would say its czech nature, because czechs are VERY jealous, but well, since I am not on czech school with foreign teachers.. hmh -
Date: Mon, Nov 19 2007 21:42:12
and students don't show any interest, at least not in my school. couple of them did try to do charge, but gave up right away.

Ahhh charge, the most weird fundamental ever... man just show them Fingerpass or thumbaround.. but anyway this is OT and starting to be a chat -
Date: Tue, Nov 20 2007 03:14:43
well as long as it's not a distraction to you or other classmates
like if you don't drop it too much, or do crazy tricks, or do tricks that require lots of attention -
Date: Tue, Nov 20 2007 10:06:12
to spin or not to spin?
-
Date: Sat, Nov 24 2007 09:57:56
It depends on the situation. If people are on the edge, you might be better off doing charges only (or at least fighting the urge of doing cooler tricks), or in some cases doing nothing at all.
It sucks being not able to spin, and I think it's unfair that some people require that. That's because I think they think that pen spinning needs very much focusing, which it doesn't in my opinion (it actually helps me concentrate).
In some cases people don't mind at all. I've found looking very focused and actively participating in the lecture while spinning yields better results than looking bored and concentrating on the pen itself.
I got pen spinning banned in my congregation I was sitting in the front row in front of everybody, doing sonic rise harmonics and only occasionally dropping the pen. People got distracted and thought I didn't care. I feel unjustified since it was one of the best sermons I've been to since I could spin my pen. -
Date: Mon, Dec 10 2007 02:54:50
It's probably the dropping the pen thing that makes people mad.
I remember trying to learn the TA a long time ago in class, I would have to pick up the pen almost every time it dropped, like getting out of my seat to get my pencil lol. and... when you learn a thumbaround, it goes flying more than an infinity.
But, once you get tricks solid, its fine to do them.
I taught this guy TA in class, and the teacher got made because he made drops all the time. -
Date: Mon, Dec 10 2007 05:13:31
I agree with most of the people here, the dropping of pens makes it irritating.
Honestly speaking, I tend to get irritated when my pen drop while I am doing freestyle.(except for learning new tricks)
Besides that, spinning of pen anywhere will be alright for me, but for some people, it will be irritating for them, cos they will think that we are not paying attention or taking the task seriously. -
Date: Mon, Dec 10 2007 06:24:34
XD serious? how serious can we get we spin PENS lol naw j/k some of us use pen spinning as a concentration. and of course id be irritated if i droped the pen im trying to learn a new trick and its true a time to spin and a time not to spin otherwise if they keep quiet then im going to keep spinning.
-
Date: Tue, Dec 18 2007 05:56:37
Well if its the "right" I think it falls under "Freedom of Expression" so yes we do have the "right". Anyway being the only serious pen-spinner in my high school (I'd bet whole town) people find it cool when I do a simple combo (they don't know the half of it ) like a Twisted Sonic>TA>TA rev it intrigues them and they find it more interesting then annoying. But I guess I have a special case... possibly.

My brother was in a class with a penspinner while in college. The pen spinner wasn't that good, so he dropped it about once per minute. My brother claimed that this was very annoying and distracting, and told me that he wouldn't be my brother if I dropped it in class like the pen spinner from his class.
So, all in all, I think it would be a good idea not to drop your pen in class. I try not to at least. I usually perform moves which I am confident about. -
Date: Thu, Jan 10 2008 03:55:37
Dropping the pen on the floor all the time really pisses my teacher off.
But as long as the pen doesn't drop onto the floor,my classmates won't get annoyed with it,just impressed. -
Date: Sat, Jan 12 2008 23:56:29
I think that you should not spin a pen in class that much because you can get other people distracted and get in trouble..

sometimes some people click their retractable pens.. very distracting too..
anyways... dathroat.. your pen is really forbidden to drop on the floor.. it makes a LOUD BANG which is louder than all other pens. seriously!

Hmm. I had a teacher who was distracted simply by the spinning (seeing it out of the corner of his eye was very distracting). I tried to stop spinning in his class but just couldn't (you would be surprised how many times you just pick up your pen, do a short combo and put it down without even thinking), so I ended up having to have my pen kept in tape when I wasn't writing with it.
So yeah, it's not just drops that can be distracting. Since this thread was started, I've almost stopped spinning in class completely. I figure it must be distracting people. My stopping spinning in class is for the greater good. -

i think all that visually annoying crap is retarded
it cant be visually annoying if you don't look at it
but dropping it, that can be a problem
i just dont do tricks that ill drop, and if i drop too much i'll stop for awhile
people have tons of annoying habits, so screw them...
im kinda crippled right now, so i refain from doing infinities because once it flew away from me and i could reach and i had to ask someone to get it for me and they gave me 'that look' -

-
Date: Thu, Apr 24 2008 14:23:07
Spinning in class is fine! But when like learning a new trick, and you keep dropping it and distracting the class it gets annoying. Friends try to do it and it pisses me off sometimes. I even got in trouble by a teacher for dropping it abit
-
Date: Thu, Apr 24 2008 20:34:07
I usually try to keep drops to a minimum in class by doing tricks which I am competent in. I also try to make it so when I do drop it is quiet. I do stuff like spinning over a note book or text book, and I use a pencil, or a light pen, like a super pirat in class.
-

A solution is to spin over books in order that this makes less noise when it falls
-
Date: Sat, Apr 26 2008 23:58:31
spinning helps me concentrate...and keeps me sane through the more boring classes...
it annoys some teachers visually but my classmates are now immune to the sound at this stage....my fave pen has a loose cap so if i spin hard you can hear it rattle so if i spin fast everyone knows the sound and turns around to see what im doing.....and this drives some teachers crazy!!
theres also a girl my english class who tries to copy my combos and well....fails, and whenever she makes loads of noise i get in trouble!
but no i don't think its wrong....theres worse habbits, like the wasters who throw stuff around the class, or talk constantly...i think im the lesser of many evils! -
Date: Sun, Apr 27 2008 22:08:47
in school i basiclly stick to sonics, thumbarounds, baks ect...but ill bust out Kam's 4 loop here and there
sry had to use that
but yah, if i drop it 3 or so times in a row i stop for a few -
Date: Tue, Apr 29 2008 21:43:03

-
Date: Tue, Apr 29 2008 23:11:20
Just what everyone else said, you just have to know when and when not to spin, in school at least. Spinning without dropping is still distracting, especially to nonspinners (everyone). This is why I'm reluctant to teach other kids tricks like the TA, because they will drop it in class over and over again. Not is this only annoying and distracting, the teacher will know it came from me. Also, it depends on the person, but most people don't know when and when not to spin, at least from my standards. It also gives other people who see you effortlessly spin the pen (in their perspective) the impression to be a showoff. That's why I almost never spin at school.

I always spin in class. And people watch me. So I stop so the teacher won't get pissed at the crowd gathering. And then they go away. And then I start again. So yah, of course I spin in class.
-

i sometimes spin in class when the teachers not looking, but im not gonna take out a mod and do crazy combos, its more like mindless ta's with a pencil.
-
Date: Fri, Jun 13 2008 15:57:09
People at my school don't give a fuck about penspinning, so as long my pen falls on the book I put on my legs instead of on the gbround, it is cool.
-
Date: Mon, Jun 30 2008 23:52:58
I only do tricks that I can do without dropping the pen, not just because of the noise, but because it's a pain to pick up the pen. I hate getting out of my desk or bending over to pick it up. I just stick to TA harmonic and simple sonic combos. I NEVER do aerials.
I also don't use mods in class, just a normal pen or pencil. And I try to avoid using retractables because of the noise. So far I've never been told to stop but occasionally a teacher glares at someone sitting near me who tries to copy what I'm doing and fails. -
Date: Tue, Jul 1 2008 00:01:03
i always have some paper or something to reduce the noise, and if i am picking up my pen alot, then i often do simpler tricks... cus that annoys me >.<
-
Date: Sat, Jul 5 2008 04:22:07
i first started spinning at school so i just open up my binder with bunch of paper beneath my hand but if im having a really off day i just don't pen spin
but the funnies thing was when some1 in my class was trying to pen spin he drop it every time on his desk for 10 min straight and finally my teacher got fed up and told him to stop, oh yeah it was good -
Date: Sat, Jul 5 2008 18:24:42
i bring mods that look like a regular pen and usally do basic stuff but bust out combos here and there
-
Date: Sun, Jul 6 2008 15:03:53
lol once I spun in an exam with two hands + aerials and the teacher was like wtf
it should be banned though considering you can cheat with it (multiple choose: TA=A TA Reverse=B Sonic=C etc, lol)
and yeah I usially do spin in class but mostly tricks I don't drop : )
I think it's not that bad, as long as you don't drop it people get used to all the flashing visual disturbtion easily i think. -

-

I'm not good enough to do pen spinning in school yet, but I think that sometimes.. Pen spinning can be very annoying for other people.
One time I was studying for one of my tests in school (I had an hour off, and had the test after that hour)
And someone (You know who you are XP) Was pen spinning near me (on the other side of a pole of some sort) And the pen dropped constantly!
So everytime the pen dropped, I bashed my head against the wall.. I was hoping s/he would notice and stop it, but s/he didn't >__>
After a while I stopped because I was getting a headache .__.
(I was also just in a bad mood, otherwise I wouldn't have bashed my head against the wall the whole time) -
Date: Sun, Aug 17 2008 14:36:45
As mentioned above... I usually use simpler tricks that its already hard for me to drop it anymore.
But,, I have this bad habit of wanting to practice tricks I haven't mastered and falls most time.
So if I started to learn things out, I usually use books. The most efficient way to reduce noise^^
(Although I sometimes use my jacket to cover the table) -
Date: Sun, Aug 17 2008 15:29:41
IT IS RIGHT TO DO THAT! VERY VERY RIGHT!

I think the my teachers find it amusing when I spin in class. especially my SOR teacher funnily enough (in SOR, there are these *really* annoying girls who are really loud, speak out of turn and ramble for *ages* while there at it. During those times I find Mr Jarvis constantly looking my way... when he's not rolling his eyes )
I spin over my books and stop after I drop it a few times cose i don't want to be a nuisance...but then i start again cose i can't stand not to spin -

I usually don't spin during class, because I don't want to distract other people with my amazing l33t pen spinning moveZzz.
lol jkjkjk
I only spin when the class is really loud and I know I won't annoy other people/my teacher. -

If a teacher tells you to stop, put your mod away, get a pencil that is unimportant, spin it and attempt to drop it a lot. The Teacher will get pissed as hell, might get in trouble though.

In class, I really only do Charge and TA harmonics, nothing advanced because I've learned from past experience that Twisted Sonic's really get's people's attention. As for spinning in class, I think it's fine since nearly every student in my school knows how to spin their pen, although they aren't dedicated to pen spinning seriously. It's more like they do it when they're bored.

I spin in class alot out of boredom...but I'm not very good so I drop alot. Whenever I get so much as a dirty look from a surrounding classmate, I quickly get the hint and stop right away. Although, when I dont bother people, pen-spinning is a great time killer and my teachers dont get as mad as they would if I were, per se, doing another teacher's homework assignment.

Try not to spin too much at class, or you may distract your classmates. Or if your classmate is fascinated , you can let them see.

I only do fundamentals when some teacher is teaching. Otherwise if class is going crazy (i am the prefect) i have to control it and at that time i'll be doing some advanced.
But it is better that you pay full concentration in studies. -

Yea I only do really easy tricks during the class. When i try going pro, i drop it. Definitely annoys people around me.

lol, that is true, that if you drop it alot, people get annoyed, but idk, no one has ever really told me that it gets annoying, the people in my school think its like the coolest thing that i can pen spin LOL i even got like 2 of my other friends into it. and anyways, if someone told me to stop, about 5 minutes later i start again, becuase i guess its something of a habit now lol

people don't really get distracted when I pen spin. The only class I actually spin advanced tricks in is a class where no one pays attention anyway though.

In class, at least during tests where I have free time, I stick to stuff like infinities, thumbarounds, and sonic's. I'm scared it'll hit my desk really hard, everyone'll look over and my teacher will tell me to put it away. :o

People around me get distracted easily when I do harmonics during a test. And my English teacher HATES it when I spin.
But really, it's up to you. I need a good grade in English, so I don't spin there. I spin everywhere else though. People get very entertained and jealous -

hahaha one time in math class I was learning the TA harmonic for the first day... anyway it was like 20 drops a minute.
after about 5 mins math teacher came over and smacked me and told me to put it away... I never did, about 45 mins later....
I got the TA harmonic down sold!!!
mmmmmmmm satisfaction!
It's only annoying when you drop the pen away from you, like off your bed, off your desk, out of the car window! , or off the balcony !
haha good times -
Date: Fri, May 8 2009 13:52:20
yeah, i think it is right to pen spin, coz everyone has the right to, lol
but if it distracts people.. then you have to take responsibilty and cover your desk with foam or something hehe
OR.. just put notebooks where you think the pen is most likely to drop -

people in my class get annoyed by me lots of times
i just try to not drop it

Date: Tue, May 12 2009 21:56:59
My teachers are getting mad at me because I've gotten so many other kids trying Infinities and stuff like that, I had to tell this one lady to kiss my ass after demanding I put the pen away.

It depends on who's around. If it's with people who need silence, may as well not, unless I have something to muffle the noise.
