Does being good at something make you like it?

if you're good at penspinning, does it make you like it?
if you're good at anything, does it make you like it?
cuz it seems like if youre good at something then
    you like it

Not really, an example is a student, he may have good grades in Math but he's not interested in Math.

well, i like many things but im not good in them lol.

I like math and science and im good at math and science.

@kurt, well, students may be a different case cause i mean, if they wanna do well, they have to be good at all subjects whether they like it or not.

I think if you don't like something, you wont even be good at it in the first place.

That's not really true, you can hate something and be really good at it.

Like... if your parents force you to play sports or force you to study all the time, you could be extremely good at it but not necessarily like it at all.

yes if you have a winning spirit (only like things you win)
no if you have a loser spirit (only likes things u suck at)
maybe if u dont have either spirit

i suppose i like things im good at. psing is different though. ive never had to practice so much at something to get good at it.

    I don't think so.
Such as when I went to a shooting range for the first time and I was apparently really good at it, but I don't like the whole "shooting" thing. Probably 'cause war scares the hell outta me.

lol... that's exactly the position I'm in right now ... I don't HATE maths but I don't like it... I'm more interested in English...

But I always get high marks in maths ...

i think it's more the need for improvement that makes things good. im ok at parkour, but i train everyday to get better. alot of the older spinners quit because they thought spinning wasn't getting anymore challenging

I hate mathematics, but im in a class 4 years ahead of me. And i get better graders then everyone in the class. But its so boring.

  16. KurtAB

Of course. You are not going to keep doing something if you don't like it. And those people saying "I get A's in English, but i don't like it", that is different becuase you have to do that, but if you had a choice you wouldn't do it.

You are more likely to get good at something you enjoy doing. This causes people to think that being good at things makes you like them, however, I think this is very rarely the case. Although, it can be true that improving at something can cause you to like it more.

And you want to improve because you like it and you want to get better at it ... BECAUSE YOU LIKE IT.
In other words, if you like it you will probably put more time and effort in to it. Putting more time and effort into it will HOPEFULLY get you better results, yes?

Then we can go on saying that time is money so you're basically putting money and effort into it but ... that's getting complicated. tongue.gif

when u like sumthing, u would most probably want to do it.
    like practising and stuffs.
i love maths. and when exams are here i would mug and practise.
    it also applies to science.
somehow i dislike english no matter how hard i mug for it. i still dont Ace it.

    however.
when u like something it dont mean u will do well.
i like badminton but i don't do well.

it differs person by person(weird phrasing)

Here are my thoughts on the matter:

As other people have said, you don't have to like something in order to do well at it. Rather than "if you're good at something then you like it" I think it's more a case of "if you like something, you will become good at it and find ways to keep yourself interested in it". It's like in psing: you see a really cool trick and you try to learn it. When you get it right the first time, naturally you'd be ecstatic. However, once you 'mastered' it, you don't sit there and do just that trick forever. Eventually it will get boring and you may even come to hate the trick. So, if you really like psing, you don't go "oh, I've done it now" and put the pen down and never touch it again. No. You go and look for other tricks to try out that will challenge you.

If you're outstandingly good at it than i'd say yes. Otherwise that depends on your motivation to keep improving on whatever you're doing.
If you're really motivated with something than liking it should be a consequence.

It could go either way. I hate being a Checker at my work... even though Im the fastest in the entire Kroger company of the USA. If I didnt do it so much, I would probably like it a lot more. But overall, I would say yes. There are things that I like because Im good at it. Penspinning isnt one of them because I suck... but I still love it.

  33. KhaDori
    Date: Tue, Dec 23 2008 20:42:31

I think yes - because the better i get at PSing, the more im involved in it. ^^

I believe being good at improving penspinning will make you like it.
I believe in some cases, being ubergood at something(it depends) can make you bored of it.
I believe if you have mastered everything in a field, you may not necessary like it.
But being bad at something can also make you like it.... sometimes.
It's the connections that you make and/or keep making that keeps you going and liking it.
I feel it's seeing the regular improvements- is what keeps us liking what we do.
So yes, I believe that if you're good at something, then you like it-
that is, if your efficiency in acquiring skills is sufficient to your..... liking it

not necessarily, i think u can b good at alot of things that u dont like, and bad at alot of things that u do like.
the trick is to find something u like that ur good at.

but anything comes with practice like with pen spinning ull prolly just enjoy getting good at it.

I definitely agree that if you like something and are good at it, you are more likely to remain interested than if you weren't "good". But if you're passionate and into something, hey, then you can BECOME good at it!

He didn't say you have to like it to excel at it, in your case you have a mom who forced you to do math...

It would be the same reason he said, you took the time to practice, just under a different motivation

hmm...i guess my post was directed more at the overall topic of the thread rather than his post... just didn't read his post carefully enough and didn't realize that he wasn't supporting either side of the original question of...
