UPSB v3
General Discussion / Fear as Motivator

"im gonna master bakfall in one month or else i will not come to upsb for 1 month"
so thats the basic idea
someone says ill master something in a certain amount of time
and if she/he doesnt, then there is a consequence.
he or she can implement it or the mod(s) can implement it
like "ill master flush sonic in 1 week or else ill stop trading for 1 week or ban me from SB for a week"
or something
this motivates as well as puts fear in them.
the thing is, it is not mandatory, of course. it is only for those who want to do it.
personally, i think it would work well with some changes and suggestions.
people will have more motivation/fear/incentive to learn things that they couldnt when
they just spin thoughtlessly.

any comments/suggestions/questions will be appreciated! -

I wouldn't put myself under pressure to learn a trick/combo. If you really wanted to learn something you would stay persistent in learning it without the use of fear/incentive.

My sister does that too ... she makes a deal with herself and if she can't fulfil the requirements, she 'punishes herself' by banning herself from something.
I've tried ... I end up getting tempted to do to the opposite of my 'punishment' .. XD -

well its only for people who want to do it. some people just work better under pressure.
its not mandatory -

Many of us are under enough pressure at school.. XD -

could go in philosopy
But anyways i think when it comes to pen spinning you should not set deadlines for learning new tricks. Its jsut too hard to judge how long it will take to learn something. I think fear as a motivator comes more from not meeting the expectations of your peers -

A part of learning is to have the discipline to practice with out external factors. If you really wanted this do what BL4CKCR4YON'S sister does and punish yourself.
You can't expect mods to pick up the slack from poor discipline. -

this is a good idea in my opinion. I'm not coming back on here til i get multiple busts now

youre on!
i think we need a separate thread for people who want to do it...
and also need a mod or someone to keep track and implement punishments lol
anyone? -

This could be a good idea, yet I doubt the mods will spend their time with this for long, or not at all. Personally, I'd rather learn on my own then have other people assist me. I don't really take penspinning really seriously though, so if you are a serious spinner, might as well try it.

how bout getting a reward when you accomplish something?

There are 2 things wrong with punishing yourself as a motivator:
1) Punishment and forced learning decrease the fun and you will eventually hate pen spinning and quit.
2) Punishing yourself only works if you have incredibly strong will power. You'll most likely go soft on yourself and not progress as quickly as you want.
If you truly want to get better just battle more, and battle people you know are slightly (key word) better than you...but make sure you give yourself enough time to prepare. For example, challenge someone to a battle in 1 months time. It will give you enough time to prepare and hopefully motivate you enough so that you will improve. I realize my logic is flawed because the person your challenging could also improve within that month but battling people really does make you a better spinner. -

I am a little bit fear of Around tricks such as ringaround or middlearound
I can't practise it because I think that I can't do -

My problem is that I have been spending too MUCH time on UPSB when I could simply be practicing lolz....
twisted sonic triple bust > 5 hours in the arcade
If a mod would correspond with me, I would consider this -

K4S- youre just assuming things
not everyone is like that
some people just need some fear put into them.
and its not like this is official or anything.
oh well, if no mods want to do this then
people who want to do it can just punish themselves if they dont
meet their own expectations -

Yeah, you have to be self motivated and inspired to learn... not be forced by fear or other forces.

I never tried it, but i think that normal training, with music and without any consequences is better.
