Pen Modifications / Cutting barrels with X-acto

How do you cut barrels with x-acto knives? Is there a way to do it without heating the knife up?

I mean specifically like one big cut, or a slight sawing motion, or what? The reason i ask is because I don't want to have to buy new tools I would only use for pens.

    thanks.

Depends on the barrel. A supertip marker for instance is a soft material and you can cut through it easily with an x-acto knife and pressure. However, a barrel like an rsvp barrel is hard plastic and cutting through it with an x-acto without heating the blade is going to take forever or you will likely crack the barrel while trying to cut it.

You should be able to buy a mini hack saw for around $5 so its not that big of an investment if you're looking for something to cut through plastic barrels.

for an rsvp barrel, just saw thru till u get a small hole, put the x-acto knife in the hole and saw around with pressure. this kind of takes a while, but it works biggrin.gif

Cutting through rsvp barrels with x-acto knives are a fantastic way to dull your blade and it takes WAY longer than if you just invested in a hacksaw. Dremel > Hacksaw = flame+xacto > xacto.

well, thinking about teens whos parents dont allow them to buy hack saws, x-acto knives are the best way to go dry.gif

What i do is go half way through the barrely with a steak knife (with teeth) and do that all around, until you have sort of a groove, then take pliers and crack it off, sand it. WALLAH

Xacto knives are way more dangerous than hacksaws...i'd be surprised if a parent didnt realize this and allowed one but not the other.

And a steak knife = weak hacksaw pretty much smile.gif

    Haha :D

Really, you don't need to talk to them about it, but hiding the fact that you are modding pens just sounds... plain stupid :/ And they'll get used to it. Parents always need time to get used to things, but once they have it won't be a problem anymore.

I couldn't find a hacksaw and the x acto didn't work well enough.

so i used a regular size saw lol.

but i don't want to do that more often, it is not enough controla and too dangerous.

I just use a craft knife and cut a medium-deep line around the barrel, then I break the barrel and file down the jagged parts. Takes about 10 minutes, 3 minutes filing, 5 minutes cutting and 1 minute to wash the barrel of dust.

I file with a finger skateboard grip tape. tongue.gif
