There's a hell of a lot that need to be paid for, how often do they need to be paid?
-
Date: Sun, Oct 14 2007 03:08:56
the license cost is 25$ / 6 months -> 50$ / year
the server cost 39 Euro / month -> 468 Euro / Year, however xshadowfire caps the donations to 25 Euro / month (pays the rest himself) -> 300.
So the total cost to run UPSB is 350$ / Year.
Clearly, the bulk of the cost comes from the server, so that's where we should focus our donations on. -
Date: Sun, Oct 14 2007 03:17:14
So what was the $200 for again?
Did we only need to pay that once? -
Date: Sun, Oct 14 2007 03:41:23
yea, the 200$ is the cost to buy the license. it contains the initial 6month in it. then you have this renewal cost every 6 months. So in 6 months, we're gonna apy for the next 6 motnhs after.
-
Date: Sun, Oct 14 2007 06:22:31
is getting a sponser from jetpen an option?
-
Date: Sun, Oct 14 2007 06:27:23
Maybe i should donate $20cad which should cover the $350usd.
See what i did there?
edit: fixed...thx xshadowfire :> -
Date: Sun, Oct 14 2007 06:44:49
yes, you put an invalid currency.
sure you don't mean cad? -
Date: Sun, Oct 14 2007 21:28:56
If you guys need hosting i own have a resellers WHM, for 1 year. It can definately sae you soem money and a europe user gets 80ms ping which isnt bad
-
Date: Sun, Oct 14 2007 22:40:19
by the way, just noticed --
you calculated the server cost in euros and didn't convert
in usd, i'm capping donations at 35 usd, so it costs 420 per year + 50 for license = 470 usd. -
Date: Thu, Oct 18 2007 14:59:11
So wait, according to the Announcement, it sounds as if there's two people you can donate to: Zombo and xshadowfire. I donated recently to xshadowfire and my name hasn't appeared on the announcement. Does this mean your name only appears if you donate to Zombo?
Or all donations going to xshadowfire? -
Date: Thu, Oct 18 2007 17:17:57
well i suppose xshadowfire has to notify me of the donations he received so that I can put them up.
-
Date: Thu, Oct 18 2007 21:08:34
oh, i only updated it on my blog, i guess i should have updated it on donations list too, doh.
-
Date: Thu, Oct 18 2007 21:53:19
How much money do you want and what systems are you accepting for?
-
Date: Thu, Oct 18 2007 22:58:27
retro: read his blog or my announcement.
-
Date: Fri, Oct 19 2007 04:00:03

np, I'm going into computer networking communications, and i know how much webservice is a bitch outright. So i'm glad to contribute.
pretty much, i'll be throwin in more in the upcoming months. I just had extra from paypal payments -
Date: Fri, Oct 19 2007 12:35:04
wait you want this money to pay the webserver cost, or the license cost?
if you want it to be used to pay the server cost, you need to send it to xshadowfire. -

this is for the license -

i don't think its at all fair to ask for donations on something that shouldn't have to cost you anything. instead of using invision you could have just as easily used PHPBB3 for free, and focused more on smaller donations for hosting, which is much more reasonable than asking for the money you need for something as trivial as what board we're using. plenty of the other penspinning boards (JEB, GPC, etc) use the PHPBB2 and it seems to work fine for them. and as if it were an extra kick in the pants the GPC site looks about 10x more aesthetically attractive than up©sb has ever looked. granted this is only my personal opinion.
-
Date: Fri, Oct 19 2007 21:02:05
It certainly was.
Donations are not asked for or required, they are just welcomed. I don't see a board as this using a free forum service, since this is pretty much the penspinning board it has to be more professional then that. And the functions! Wiki, irc chat, teams, blogs, report, etc. I do not see how you find the other boards better looking though, and this is UPSB, FYI, and not up©sb (where did that © even come from?).
That was my opinion. Donations are welcomed, not demanded. -
Date: Fri, Oct 19 2007 21:58:58
well you see, UPSB2 was on phpBB if you remember and the reason we moved to UPSB3 was mostly due to phpBB being lacking. If it weren't for phpBB, we would still be on UPSB2 right now.
granted phpbb3 is impressive, but there is a lot you don't see that makes paid engines superior.
always remember: you get what you paid for.
also, you have the choice to donate for what you want.
if you don't want to donate for the license, that's fine, just donate to xshadowfire and you'll be guaranteed that this money is going towards the server cost. It's not like I'm forcing you to donate for the license.
I mean, if you think about it, why not close upsb and go back to ucpsb? It costs us nothing and it worked fine! The truth is, if you want something better, you pay for it. -
Date: Fri, Oct 19 2007 22:41:49
i also think, -granted again i see the point that a donation is always good no matter what- that it is strange and confusing that the site is on a box in ... frankfurt, germany. this eludes me because i was under the impression that, while remaining 'universal' in nature, the intention for upsb was in fact to cater to the north american penspinning community on the basis that there is no american or canadian etc pen spinning board. while i do not know the sites activity statistics to really say whether or not it does in fact make sense to have this server in europe, i still think its strange.. sorry to sneak a broader question into a more specific topic, but its relevant because as much as i would like to donate, i also don't want to just throw my money at something not knowing what it is.
of course, i am not part of the administration and as much as i would like to advise, i still probably just don't know enough to do so. -
Date: Fri, Oct 19 2007 22:44:56
ah, that's because european pricing is much much better than american ones. we went hunting for the best server available for our price range and this is what we got. Sure the latency will suffer for americans, but it's not that big of a deal (still good). You won't find a server of this quality, let alone any kind of dedicated server, for under $50 in the US.
PS: I wrote in a post somewhere on the first page what the annual costs are. -
Date: Fri, Oct 19 2007 22:49:51
i guess that makes sense, thanks zombo ;-]
-
Date: Sun, Nov 18 2007 04:10:31
Central Canada I'm getting a ping of 150ms. Which is perfectly reasonable for a message board.
One thing I am wondering about. What happens if we don't get the donations we need? If enough money doesn't come from donations it has to come from somewhere, whos pocket will this be out of and what happens is they get tried of picking up the slack? -
Date: Sun, Nov 18 2007 04:40:16
well if we come down to that we'll probably have to make stronger push or donation drives to keep it alive long enough until we can find another solution.
-

mine, i guess.
if i really get tired of paying for it, i might slap google ads on the forum until people feel like donating, or find some cheaper solution.
i have thought about getting a cheap us vps (<$30) to host just the forums, but i don't really want to spend any more money :/ -

yea google adds can be annoying like that.
do we donate through paypal?
If so I need to wait a few months before I can do that.

Date: Sun, Nov 25 2007 02:39:29
How come the target is for January, when it says that November is only $5/$35?
-
Date: Sun, Nov 25 2007 02:47:08
because i already paid for november.
-
Date: Sun, Nov 25 2007 02:55:59
shouldn't you be on the donation list then?
-
Date: Sun, Nov 25 2007 04:03:56
no, because it's my server and people are donating to me :|
same reason why zumbo's not on the list. -

What happens if noone pays? Does the board get shutdown or do we get another chance?
-
Date: Mon, Nov 26 2007 07:42:46
just means i have to pay more.
-
Date: Mon, Nov 26 2007 07:47:04
but what if you're completely out of money and can't pay?
-
Date: Mon, Nov 26 2007 07:51:39
then i beg people for money?
normally i'll know if i can't pay at least a week ahead of time, so in that case i'll ask zombo for some money..or something. -
Date: Sat, Dec 8 2007 19:28:59

Date: Sat, Dec 15 2007 15:58:28

-
Date: Fri, Jan 4 2008 18:11:38
thanks to idontgiveaf!!!

oh, i guess that's because i used my credit card via paypal, because I never transfer any money onto my paypal account..
it's good to know that they then add service fees, so i know for the future..
and there's a "just" missing in my name -
Date: Fri, Jan 25 2008 12:53:55
thx to kensai, for some reason i only got 9.21 out of 10 though.
~$15 left to fill out March server cost!!! -
Date: Wed, Feb 6 2008 01:00:55
is there i can donate money without a paypal or a credit card?
-
Date: Wed, Feb 6 2008 02:15:07
uhhhh no.
-
Date: Thu, Feb 7 2008 13:34:37
hey thx to clog, I only received 13.82 out of it tho
I think that PayPal puts no fee on directly sending money across paypal accounts, but if you use a credit card or debit card, there's fees to it. -
Date: Thu, Feb 7 2008 20:34:47
Oh haha, stupid paypal! I guess they aren't there to make friends..just money.
-
Date: Thu, Feb 7 2008 22:11:08
does that mean paypal jacked another cent, because i only got 13.81
-
Date: Thu, Feb 7 2008 22:38:20
sorry, 13.81, typo
-

Date: Mon, May 5 2008 15:56:24
thx to taichi1082 for the donation.
-
Date: Thu, May 8 2008 17:52:48
Not sure if it's a good idea, but maybe we should publish a bit more about donation, if we want people to feel concerned a bit...maybe you would receive a bit more, to be able to complete each month...BTW, why did the monthly cost of the server rised ?
-
Date: Thu, May 8 2008 18:30:07
we have a thread with a lot more info
http://www.upsb.info/forum/index.php?act=a...mp;f=2&id=6
cost raised cuz we moved to a faster, american server (old one was in germany) -

well, sfsr did say he was going to donate 30 dollars a month, but.... -
Date: Wed, May 14 2008 09:41:29
No, I said every few months.. :/ And I will donate $30 again at the end of this month, and I hope I'll be able to keep it up, but I can't promise anything. I didn't expect the costs to rise this much though.
-
Date: Fri, May 16 2008 03:06:34

-
Date: Sun, May 18 2008 00:44:53
...cash how? planning to mail me a wad of bills or something? <.<
-
Date: Sun, May 18 2008 00:48:25
I would donate $20 in cash, so I would mail you it if I had an address to mail to.
-
Date: Sun, May 18 2008 01:12:06
cash has a tendency to get "lost" in the mail. if you want to send a money order or check i could consider it... :/
-
Date: Sun, May 18 2008 01:17:34
I might do a money order then, I'll see if I can get one on my way to school Monday.
Edit: I realized Monday is a holiday, I'll get one Tuesday. -
Date: Sat, May 31 2008 13:07:42

Is PayPal the only way to send the money?
I was literally thinking about mailing a wad of bills -
Date: Fri, Sep 5 2008 06:01:51
if you really want to send cash you can also send a money order through your local drug or grocery store.
Awesome sent me one before and it worked out fine. -

you should do what tek tells you to do when sending him cash for a trade. fold a piece of paper in 3rds. and put money inside. (won't work if you have coins tho)
-
Date: Fri, Dec 26 2008 01:20:50
if i go to a pen meet can i give the money to a moderater aka Kam for donation?
-
Date: Fri, Dec 26 2008 09:27:51
pretty sure u can
-
Date: Sat, Dec 27 2008 02:10:07
Can we send money hidden in a BICtory to you?
-
Date: Mon, Dec 29 2008 02:35:29
If you wish to send cash donations, please reconsider. Cash is very easily "lost" in the mail. However, you can send a money order, obtainable from your local post office, or a check.
Please make all money order and check donations payable to Alex Yu and send them to:
Alex Yu
P.O. Box 17594
Sugar Land, TX, 77496
USA
Make sure that you write down your username somewhere visible so I don't have to hunt you down to find your username.
...and if you still are adamant on sending cash, go ahead, but your donation will not count if it's lost. -
Date: Sun, Mar 1 2009 14:52:27
Thanks to Eso for donating for March.
-
Date: Sat, Mar 28 2009 17:31:24
