I'm bringing this up because im seriously considering becoming a teacher. And my question is.. Why are teachers paid so little? Arn't their jobs important to society and whatnot? I never really got this, anyone got a reason why?

    Teachers aren't paid that little.
You're basing your assumption off the negativity that many teachers have towards their salaries due to the fact that they are not paid enough for the work that they have to do.
    Why?
    1) They don't have to do all the work they do
Teachers often take it upon themselves to go beyond what their job entails. I've had many teachers who really did nothing, because they didn't want to. My math teacher last year didn't grade homework, and let his aids grade the quizzes and tests in class. He literally went home with no work to do. Other teachers assign tons of work, projects, and even grade notes.
    2) Where are we supposed to get this money from? Public education can only afford to pay teachers so much. It isn't as if the quality of their teachers affects some sort of profit the school is supposed to be making.

    So yeah.

Your pay goes up based on a chart of time in your district vs. education level

How do u know its that easy? Also i think it depends on what level of children your teaching. Some can get really annoying

Because i get taught by teachers, i see what they do.

  16. Tialys

It depends. University lecturers get paid a lot based on their credentials and experience, and also because they generally do research in addition to teaching. High school or elementary school teachers are paid less because they have less experience and their job involves less work. A lot of high school teachers don't even teach the whole day, unlike elementary school teachers. Intuitively, salaries should reflect an occupation's worth to society but they don't because salaries are not normalized based on importance. A capitalistic society allots pay based on the job's influence over controlling money, either directly or indirectly. There are a few exceptions, however, such as physicians, but then again physicians are self-employed.

It is definitely a stressful job, UNLESS you're the right person for it
the kind who knows what's their problem and what isn't
and who can deal with students

Yeah, I've seen some teachers break down in class too. The class was so bad the teacher ran out crying...it was bad...
I think I'd have the tolerance to be a teacher though, I really want to be a teacher =]

Teachers can be stressful IF the students hate you, they will create stress for you and you can't do anything about it biggrin.gif (unless they do something against the law against you, rules applies to you too)

When you get the job, do this math, $ x hours x days of school

Best way to start school, is to pen spin and they be like Cooooool and stare at you.

As a student in Economics....teachers get paid what they should, not too much and not too little. Teachers' wages are set by the market, and that is the "fair" amount.

Teachers are in unions so it is a very secure job. It is very hard to get fired and IMO it is not a very good system, but i know there are not any perfect systems. Teachers' pay is not based off of performance only off of time worked. This does not give teachers intensives to work harder, a big reason our public education is not that good.

If you really want to be a teacher you really should, but just know that you will not be paid very much starting off.

I sorta teach? If you wanna be a teacher, you gotta really be patient yet have control with the kids. And that thing about them getting paid very little, it just seems they get paid little for the amount of time they put into their job. Like, in an office job, you work from 9-5 and go home and repeat the next day. Some teachers at my school get there at 7:30 and leave after 5, and still mark and do stuff at home. Department heads and higher admin staff get paid more cuz of seniority and due to the fact that they do more work. And if you wanna be a teacher, you have to start at elementary levels, even if the kids are annoying. Then you can work with high school kids later. But trust me, little kids are fun. ^^ Not in that way, for you pervs out there.

We have an advert running at the moment over here that says that one in every four of us will suffer from a mental illness at some stage in our lives. Sounds like teachers maybe not far from the average...

Teachers here are quite well paid. Although initial pay is fairly low, as you work for more years, your pay increases. Most people here would agree being a teacher is a well paid job (about £23 000 where as average wage is somewhere around £17 000). You can also get increased pay for doing extra work (marking exam papers, being a head of a department etc). With extra work such as this, you can add £2 000 up to perhaps £10 000 more. And of course, there is oppurtunity to be promoted and increase pay still futher, not to mention a good pension plan.

That said, my mother is a teacher and she does not recommend the job to a soul...

Can't speak for Americans, but I've never had a shitty teacher, they all seemed to enjoy what they do. And the work is not paid that great, 40k is pretty shitty, I'm not sure of the exact rate but the lico isn't too far below that.
