Most of you probably heard of MTV's Pimp my Ride. We want to take the same concept but to PS.
The idea is that every "episode", we pick an applicant's pen and send it to a master modder, who has to remod (perharps create a new mod around it?) and improve it. The original pen must be an old, worn out one so that the contrast is quite striking with the finished product.
In our case, the master modder will be iMatt. This being a show, there will be some filming involved. It will start with the applicant presenting his old pen the way it is, then it will shift the action to iMatt after he receives the pen and films the process of modding it and its final state. The pimped mod will then be sent to the spinner, who must film himself "reacting" to the transformation (with a little bit of spinning, of course!).
The frequency of the episodes depend on two factors: time and money.
Although the challenge for iMatt will be to re-use most of the used parts of the pen, there's no doubt that he will also need to use new parts of his own. This will require some resources and so the number of pens we can mod depends on how much money we can spare. I will try and get this show sponsored by a pen company or a store who could supply the parts needed directly. Or maybe the pen spinner chosen can send some extra pens to iMatt to use for modding.
The other factor is time. It will take a while to not only send the pen back and forth, but also to film the modding and whatnot. Finally, it must be edited. The whole process could take a month or more to do. This also limits the frequency of episodes.
Because of these two constraints, the idea still remains experimental and may or may not work out. But I think it's a pretty cool project and it's worth giving a shot!
How to apply
You have a crappy old pen you want modded? Then apply!
Here are the requirements:
- You must have a camera and be able to record video and sound. You must record yourself presenting the old pen and when you receive your pen back, you must film your reaction and spin it.
- You must have a old (ugly) mod that you want to use. Do not send us new mods that you purposely modded badly just for the show. We want real genuine used pens.
- Please don't submit a destroyed or unmoddable pen. It must be somewhat salvageable.
- The ability to supply extra pen parts is a bonus.
Here's how to submit your application:
- Send Zombo a PM or a e-mail (kaiwenzhang AT gmail DOT com) of a short clip (1 to 2 minutes or more if you like) presenting yourself and your pen. Make it interesting and entertaining. Present yourself, tell us what you do, who you are, what are your dreams, what kind of person are you, etc. Tell us why you want your pen modded, when you modded it, what the pen means to you (maybe it's your first mod?). In other words, convince us to pick you and your pen. You must present your pen clearly so that we can evaluate it better. Of course a good camera helps your cause. If you need reference, watch some Pimp my Ride episodes.
- In addition, write down the following information in your PM/e-mail:- Your nickname
- Your pen
- Your country
- Are you willing to send extra pens? Which ones?
Additional notes:
- We do not guarantee that every submitted pen will be selected.
- Selection criterions are based mostly on your presentation and the pen itself.
- If you are selected, you must keep information about the modded pen secret until the episode is released.
- The name of the show is tentative. If you have a better name, submit it.
- iMatt has the final say on the project. Pay attention to any details he might add.
- When you film your reaction after receiving the pen back, make sure you're filming the very first moment you're opening the envelope with the pen in it, so that your reaction of surprise is genuine. We want to see how you're really reacting. Don't open the mail, then film after, this is not fun! It spoils the surprise.
We are also looking for an editor for this project. PM Zombo.Please participate (and watch when the episodes come out)! Should be fun!

Once the project starts I will be looking for a couple experienced modders to help me with ideas. Depending on the mod i may also look for an insert designer. How fast i can get the project done depends on how busy i am with school, so if i happen to be very busy with exams then progress will slow but hopefully it shouldn't take too long. -

also, if when you present yourself, be sure to give as many details on your personality, your hobbies, dreams etc... The more info you give, the more we can use it to mod a pen to your liking.

well, I tried to mod a HGG ,hmm didn’t really work as well as I expected lol.
I cut one of the grips in 2 and stuff a half on each end then put the original HGG tips inside the caps and crammed a crap load of blue tack in with it then I selotaped on other tips – one is metal and the other is plastic full of blue tack – to the ends but it didn’t work very well either , they keep falling out or moving around lol.

haha, read my mind exactly. Maybe pen mod preferences would be more helpful...single sided versus double sided; unbalanced or balanced; minimal momentum or crazy momentum; short or long; etc. -

This would be great to take part in. Will the 'can you please pimp my pen' be included with the realeased video? and will the released video have a theme song/intro? Or is that up to the editor? -

well part of it is incorporating it into the mod,
but the other part of it is to know who the person is, you know? This is a reality show, it's important.
Usually you try to pick a good person, so that ppl know that person better and say "yeah s/he deserves this". -

At this time there wont be any LED mods and the reason behind that is cost. I know of 2 good methods to make LED pens but the process is very specific to get an on/off switch....since i am supposed to work with what is given to me i would have to create a new LED mod and I will end up destroying a lot of pens in the process so the cost gets kind of ridiculous. So no LED mods, sorry.

Not at all, its just the pen that I learned all the fundamentals on. Its pretty special to me... but probably cost under a dollar... hell, its actually a promotional pen I got at a college fair... Harvard to be precise, so I guess it is on the nicer side of promo pens. -

Any chance I could send an application for episode 2... Or episode 1, whatever. I just thought about my old first RSVP. For those of you who don't know the story I modded it about three years ago the first time. Spun it faithfully for 2 and a half years and then a couple months ago I tried to remod it and it worked for about a week. Then it started to get a bit of a ticking sound when it would hit the floor, my finger etc. I tried to fix it but in the process the ink tube exploded. Its been in a ziploc bad ever since and I haven't touched it. I'd love to have it back but I'm afraid to do anything else with it although I'm sure I would someday. Anyway, let me know.

Hmm... Sucks that it didn't really work out. But perhaps if it doesn't seem feasible right now you guys could try again in the next few months or after Christmas. It'd be cool if we could get some actual television network to agree to show the episode. It might even happen, those 'life' networks up around discovery channel (for those with satellite) are always showing weird things. I'm sure one of the crazy networks (maybe even discovery) would be more than happy to show it if we supplied at least 22 minutes of decent footage.

I agree that the person having their stuff pimped should contribute. Furthermore, I don't think that a sponsor would be needed. Whoever is having their pen 'pimped' should send a few pens and money to cover return postage. If the modder cannot find all the parts they need in the pens given to them, then being a well known modder, they might have some parts lying around that they wouldn't mind using. Surely there will be one person on this forum who would be willing to do this?
If this were to become regular, perhaps then and only then could a sponsor be considered.

OK people really have to stop waiting for the first vid to come out before deciding to send in an application.
If everyone does that, how can the first vid even be made? Just send in your application and if the vid doesnt turn out the way you want it to at least you got a pimped out pen. If your pimped out pen doesnt turn out the way you expected or want it to, be grateful cause at least you've got a better mod to use..gif)

i have no idea when the first episode will be released.
first we need applications
then we pick the best one
then the applicant needs to film a few things
then its sent to the modder
then the modder films a few things and mod it
then sends back to applicant
then the applicant needs to film the reaction after receiving mod
then we send all that stuff to the editor
then the editor needs to put it together
we then publish -

Alright, well there really needs to be some sort of rule set for this (such as sending in a (1/4) section of a scratched dong-a body with an rsvp grip on it with a cap)
Just some basic thing so it's just not completely ridiculous.

in your video you present yourself, and your mod.
think of Pimp my Car show, where the first 2 minutes its basically the person talking about himself and explaining how crappy his car is. and the person says like "Please MTV, pimp my car!"
