General Discussion / Negative feedbacks for penspinning

I just came back from work, I straight away took a bath and on my laptop to learn some new tricks.
But, my relatives is giving me feedbacks today like, " Can you earn money by spinning pens?". I tried to ignore them, but they just keep on nagging about a lot of stuffs.
And they suggest me to learn something which seems more useful, like going army to learn how to fire a pistol, and asked me to spin a pistol instead of pen. At least I can work for a government this way dry.gif

Get really angry because people don't give respect to my hobby, and more importantly, they insulted pen spinning as useless skills.

Did anyone of you receive any negative feedbacks from anyone while spinning your pen?
    Come share your experience...

i've been doing Card Manipulation for about 2 years before i started PS and have yet to hear any negative comments to my face (maybe cause im built like a American football player tongue.gif) ... but for the most part it has been things like "wow how did you do that" "do that again" "i'd hate to play poker with you" or "are you going to work in Las Vegas?" .... which is nice to hear but i really dont do it for the comments .. i've said it before several times but i'll say it again ... if i do anything like this (Flourishing, Magic, Pen Spinning) its because i like it and im doing it for myself and not for anyone else. if other ppl dont like it thats their problem and it doesnt effect me in any way.

as for the whole "can you make money with it" thing .. you can make money with ANYTHING if you know how. there are plenty of companies out there that are looking to market their products in a "new" way and just because it may not be a pen doesnt mean you cant spin it. i've seen several commercials with pens, cell phones, etc. were they are being spun in all kinds of different ways. sometimes its the main focus of the commercial sometimes it is the main point is that if your good at what you do and know how to sell it, then you can cash in. .. .thats just my 2 cents

I think the older generation of Asian people look down upon "idle" hobbies. My parents think the same way, too. I remember when I was heavily into fighting games and my parents asked me if I could make money doing that. If I was as good as Justin Wong, then yes, it's possible to make money.

As for pen spinning, I can definitely make money off of it. It just requires a lot of work.

I don't really get that many negative comments but that's mostly because I don't really spin in front of people that much. Even if I do, I'm not open about it.

Your parents would rather you learn how to shoot a pistol than penspin? Seems kind of...redneck...

Lol I think what they mean by making money is in terms of the future, not raking in ten bucks a week for selling mods (no offense). Like if your hobby is soccer you probably wouldn't get that comment since everyone knows pro soccer players make thick dough. Pen Spinning, most people haven't even heard of it, it just seems so lame and pointless to the average noob. Of course we all know PS will become main stream by the time were older and we will be the ones rich as hell for spinning since the beginning laugh.gif

Don't see why you should get angry. It's only their opinion and has no bearing on reality. And about the money/waste of time comments, don't worry. Whereas PS has some potential for personal improvement, there are people who pay lots more (time and money) for hobbies that don't get them anywhere in life. Drinking and smoking come to mind.

well those are not really hobbies .. more like addictions ... which reminds me, i need a smoke.

In their simplest sense, they're hobbies: "an activity or interest pursued for pleasure or relaxation and not as a main occupation" (Dictionary.com)
Those who try to downplay the activities as something else are only fooling themselves, because using that flawed logic, you could easily say that PS is not a wasted hobby but a 'necessary' addiction. Not trying to insult you or anything, just saying that it would be hypocritical for people to call PS a "waste of time" or a "useless hobby" only because it is not yet socially accepted. But because people still continue to do so, do not take their comments too seriously. In fact, I'd probably chuckle if someone said that to me.

Well, when I first started spinning my parents weren't happy with the amount of time they thought i wasted on spinning my pen. Nothing recent though.

Yea, I agree with you on the older generation of Asian people part.

Like C3rb3rus says, advertisement nowadays are looking for new idea, and pen spinning can be included too. Seems like pen spinning can make money afterall, I wonder if I were to tell them back, what will the reaction be dry.gif

in singapore, people are just too damn 'kiasu'. my parents and relatives just want me to go the regular path, get a degree and a job. like eso said, they look down on 'idle' and 'just for fun' hobbies.

    mainly my parents, really.

Apparently I spend too much time on penspinning, and too much money. I just realized while reading this thread though, that it neither takes more time nor more money then other hobbies. It's just cause it's not socially accepted they think I spend too much money on it. I mean, a skateboard costs $300, and you need a new one now and then. I think that's about the amount of money I've spent on pens now, after about a year and a half. Video games, a new console costs $300-800 (<- that's what a PS3 costs nowdays right?), + games that cost like $70 each. Much more then pens.

One thing I think is an annoyance to many is that atleast I spin pens almost constantly.

Sfsr: wat you said FTW.. it because its not socially accepted..

i don't really get negative feedback at skool. my friends just accepted as my hobby and some of my friends call me "Pentrix" (i dont know its actually called PenSpinning)

my mum used to say that i'm wasting my life with pens..but now she's just like..spin ur pen in ur video game time not study time..

I hate ppl that say " Ur not gonna make any money out of it" or " PS is useless, why do you do it?"
Its really annoying. Just cuz its useless doesn't mean its pointless. I mean, seriously, look at those Counter-strike/Halo 3 players. Playin video games is just as useless as PS, but its all for FUN!...

Okay maybe the 1337 Counter-Strike players make alot of money from competitions...

i dont usually get much feedback but most of it is negative sad.gif things like "do u just sit at home all day spinnning a pen" which is quite an insult and my friend saw a ps vid and said "they're wasting their time , u gotta be some saddo to spend so much time on something so useless as that!" or when i pull out a pen and start spinnning he just says "O for god sake!" I think it's just because they cant do it and theyre jealous!! and my parents say i cannabalise pens! uhh typical

I get a lot of positive feedback at school but also a lot of negative feedback. I get positive feedback is from teachers and students who.. you know.. DON'T suck. The negative feedback is almost all from students who I wouldn't really care about if they all died in a tragic baking accident or something and usually its when there's a small group watching me and giving random positive comments. It usually goes something like this:

    POSITIVE
Student: Hey, Ms. Patrick, check out what Peter's doing with his pen!!
Teacher: Wow.. that's really cool.. hmm.. pens, rubiks cubes.. is there anything you can't do?
Me: Not that I can think of off the top of my head, no. *winks*
    Teacher: *laughs*
    My head: *grows*

    NEGATIVE
    Random student 1: SWEET!
Redneck-jock: Why the hell do you do that? You have WAY too much time on your hands, boy.
Random student 2: How do you do that?
    Me: Do you watch tv?
    Redneck-jock: Yeah...
    Me: Yeah, I don't.. that's how
    Random students: *laugh*
    My head: *grows*

    OFF-TOPIC
It'd be funny if we had a database of things we can say whenever we receive insults or negative feedback.

To me, I really feel insulting when ppl find pen spinning is a waste of time.

Haha, so, maybe this thread is to let pen spinners let off their steam?
