Philosophy / Who's a pen spinner?

I've been wondering is anyone who can do just a fundamental like TA or fingerpass considered a penspinner or to be classed as a PS do u have to be able to do all the fundamentals or do u have to be able to do hugantic combos???

I suppose you're a pen spinner if you do it as a hobby rather than just do a trick or two that you randomly learned from someone. Same goes for things like yo-yo: (almost) anyone can throw a yo-yo down, let it sit at the end of the string, then pull it back up. Someone who's a "yo-yoer" (?) would be pacticing and working towards doing more.

There are some people on YouTube that I've seen and they have a good number of tricks under their sleeves, and yet they have never been exposed to the PS communities. Would they be called "pen spinners"? I certainly think so.

Now, what about all those other people that can only do one or two tricks? What are they? Pen spinners or people-who-just-know-a-few-tricks?

From what I can tell, it's not how many tricks you know, but rather how much interest and time you invest into the hobby, whether you're in a community or not.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

    @Eso:
I don't think that you need to be a part of any kind of community pertaining to your hobby to be a hobbyist of any sort. You may only have to look into a community to find info to help you out in what you are having trouble/questions about.

For my first year of pen spinning, it was all my own. I had soon joined UPSB but never contributed to the boards. My first post was around my 1 year anniversay of pen spinning. I would consider myself a pen spinner for that first year because it my hobby and I was active to learning about it.

If you can do something relative to penspinning, even if its a horrible fingerpass you are a penspinner in my opinion. Perhaps not a very devoted penspinner but still a penspinner none the less.

an art teacher in my school says if u can write yr name u can do art - is it the same for penspinning?
i think u might have to invest a lot of time into it for it to be a real hobby or for u to be classed as a real penspinner

Who is a pen spinner? Someone who spins their pen and enjoys doing it. They don't need to be part of a community, they don't need to have all the latest mods, heck, they don't even have to be good at doing it! So long as someone spins their pen and enjoys it, they are a pen spinner to me.

Lol I can't even do TA Harmonic cause I dunno, my TA rev is a little messed up. See i don't think it depends on the tricks you do to make you a pen spinner because I can do a back fall ( which i consider advanced hah) but still no TA Harmonic. If you like pen spinning you are a pen spinner.

For me, pen spinners are those who know at least the few fundamental tricks, always expose them to new tricks, hav interest in pen spinning and always learn & create new tricks. Most importantly, they hav 2 b willing 2 teach other spinners happy.gif

But a really serious Penspinner is someone who is active on boards and can spin a pen very skilled.

There are quite a few penspinners not on boards. Michael(rarely active, but is active every now and then) , Patte(inactive), NHK (inactive), Phya (inactive) and most of the people from UPSB 2.

@ WhiteFang, I don't even know the meaning of what I wrote.

i'm a beginner and i only felt like a penspinner when i was able to do the TA and the Sonic. so i would say that you ar a pen spinner both depending on what you think and feel about the art, and when you can actually do one or two tricks!

I think a pen spinner is anyone who spins for their own enjoyment and is working towards developing their skills, this is like my cousin when he learned the infinity. For a while I didn't see him as an active spinner because he wasn't learning anything else. Then he said "Joe, I want to learn the sonic." So I think it was then that he really became a pen spinner in my eyes.

Your siggy says that you partially retired from pen spinning.
To me, there is no such thing, pen spinning is a skill, a piece of art, you are carrying it with you wherever you go.icon_spin.gif
Unless you totally forgotten how to spin wtf.gif

To me, pen spinner are those who can do tricks besides the fundamentals.

  30. minche
    Date: Mon, Jan 7 2008 15:55:24

infinity isn't fundamental but is easier to learn. so i teach couple of kids thumbaround and infinity and then they are ps-ers, despite the fact that they have no interest in further practicing. to me pen spinner is someone who is always interested in learning new tricks & combos. not to just learn fundamentals, and spam them. even someone who knows only fundamentals can be a pen spinner, if he/she tries, practices their variations, doing combos with them, put in their best effort. so if someone wants to learn, they will probably find some help, 'cause it's very hard to learn ps yourself (just think how many tricks would you know if there wasn't for youtube, this board, some friend who showed you tricks..?), and they will probably find some help here, or on some other ps board.

Recycled pencils actually spin better than normal ones. Mine are heavier, feel better, and spin better. Just a bit shorter than what I am used to.

And I say the term pen spinning also incorporates pencil spinning. The pencil and pen are practically brothers.

-Someone who is actually good at the art of pen-spinning.
-Someone who always tries to improve themselves through the art of pen-spinning.
-A person the enjoys pen-spinning (doing tricks).

But when he does kombos... and learn new things i call the one a penspinner...

    so:
is there a guy in calls who does always... Ta, Charge and passes... and he wouldnt learn more... cant do kombos i would call him Nopser (inofficial naming from the gpc of sb who is not a penspinner xDDD No PSer = No penspinner)

is there a guy who can do ta, charge and passes... and he try to learn more and combine. i would call him a penspinner...

I have kids in my class just doing sonic 23-12 and TA. I don't classify them as spinners, there just random people who have learned the trick from other random people.

You play football with your friends sometimes at summer for fun (like fundumental trick spinners, for fun or knows few tricks).

You play football very often and you are training to get better and better and you love to play football (pen spinners).

pen spinners in my eyes are people that like to pen spin and just enjoy it. People who go hell out on it like training 24/7 on mastering a trick isnt a pen spinner in my eyes but reither than just a person who wants to learn the tricks to impress. So imo, pen spinners are people that just love pen spinning for fun reither then showing off to others of what they are capable of. Even though once in a while, i like to show my friends me pen spinning, the people who just love doing it for a kick and enjoyment and something funer to do then sit that hour long maths test. nuff said

i think that a pen spinner is someone who are willing to throw precious money and time into pen spinning and not expecting any gains from it( not including the fun in psing). If you actually start pen spinning because you want to become pro and earn $$ from commercials, or to appear on tv and become famous, you're not a pen spinner. A pen spinner must now spin pens with a motive, instead he spin pen bcause it is a hobby to him
