How To Make A New Pen mods
For beginners who wish to make good pen mods that would be accepted by others
Intro
Many people have been asking the same question. And yes, it is hard to answer that question because it is all due to experience and somewhat creativity of each people's mind. I have taken a lot of question about few of my good pen mods back in UCPSBv2 and JEBv1 and was asked about how to make good pen mods. Although i cannot say I am a good pen modder, I can still say I am a decent one.
First, you must understand that everyone came through difficulties, with some exceptions. Some very minority can mod very well from the first time they try, but most people will start off from awkward and non-pleasing pen mod, and that is extremely normal. Everyone learns from experience. Use the experience well.
I am writing this merely through my experience in Pen Modding, and some might not be very objective, but I am sure it will help you.
How I started Pen Modding
If you have seen my earlier works, which most of you never did and i do not have pictures of them anymore, you can see that the mod looks VERY VERY awful, looks like it can't spin for life. However, as the time passed and I challenged myself, I got better, and ended up with my best work, Lakubo MMX MP. I do not think my Lakubo MMX MP was very good, but I say it was MUCH MUCH better than the first time I made a mod. First time i modded, people said i suck and it looks like shit or something similar to that. When I started pen spinning, I wanted to become the best Pen Modder, which now i know is impossible because I am not that great, but i had many problems like having no allowance and can make pen mods only from junks, and I was limited in options. I had only one chance in modding, that if i fail, there was no second time.
Tip 1: Always start out with cheapest and most cheap pens. I started it out using Bic Round Stics. It was not my style making mods that someone already made, so I was always making my original pens (though later, that changed). Bic Round Stics are one of the best pens to start original mods with. Find other junk pens in your house that you know you won't use for rest of your life, and use Bic Round Stics with it to make something. Doing that will allow you to get the idea how things will fit and what will fit.
For example, to be obvious, Bic Round Stics with RSVP caps will never work unless you stuff something in between the barrel of Bic Round Stic and RSVP cap. Barrel of Pilot-G3 (If you never seen them, look them up, because I won't post picture of pens.) will seem to fit well with RSVP caps well, but without stuffing the space with the tape, it is still not thick enough to make a good secure fit. Usually, pen caps are compatible only with that pen. To fix that problem, you would want to find a pen with a plug that looks like Uni Lakubo's back part. Place a good grip on that back plug and place the RSVP cap. There you go, a perfect fit. From this, it can be said that without experiencing with easy cheap and junk pens, many wouldn't understand the estimated size of the parts that would be seen as compatible with another pen. That is why starting out with cheap pens are important. Because you can mess up and not be in trouble too much.
Tip 2: Find the most common size of a grip. This is very very important. Grips are usually parts that would either: 1) Be placed on edge of a pen to make Infinity tricks easier to do, 2) Be placed inside a cap so that the cap will firmly fit with another pen's back plug, 3) Be placed on the center of the pen for making multiple spin tricks (ex: Thumbspin) easier. In 1)'s case, there isn't much of a grip that would NOT be good. Most grips (like Anyball) works in double-sided pen mods (like Bictory Mod). In RSVP MX's case, you are using grip of HGG (Hybrid Gel Grip). This goes the same for 3), but except the fact that HGG grip are too tight.
In 2)'s case, you are looking for a grip, a certain size of a grip. If you have seen Zebra Tapliclip or Zebra Hyper JELL (both has VERY VERY similar grips), or Pilot Super Grip, they LOOK all the same length, and will most likely work in 1) and 3)'s case. However, in 2)'s case, Pilot Super Grip wouldn't fit with most pen caps. However, Zebra grips would fit on RSVP or Hyper JELL caps. Usually, these size of grips are the most common. HGG, Super Grip, Hyper JELL, Bic Mechanical Pencil Grip and those pens all have somewhat similar length of grip. However, RSVP grips are short, Lakubo grips are very long. However, grips like RSVP and Lakubo are actually rare.
Although, similar doesn't mean same. Therefore, you should look in stores to see for yourself how they actually are.
Basically, with this, i was able to get a fair pen mod, I think "Bic Signo MX" or something like that, which is 15 grams (fair weight as a pen mod). It is a one-sided Bic Round Stic with a Uni Signo Caps on the back (they actually fit well). Signo Tips will work well when placed on the front side of the pen with a Pilot Super Grip grip that would secure the tip. I have practiced pen spinning with this pen for two month because i was satisfied with it until I started out laying my hands on pens other than Bics and Signos that I had at home. Although i explained the above with pens you might have never heard, look it up on UPSB Pen Spinning WIKI for pens, or google it. Although, i started my first pen mod being original without going for Bictory or RSVP MX. THis was due to the fact that I wanted to become the best Pen Modder. You can also go for original pen mod before doing existing pen mod, but I don't recommend this because you would be starting out without any guidance. If you have money, then you should try modding one very simple pen mod (ex: RSVP V1, BICtory) then two of more harder ones (ex: RSVP MX, G3 Jimnie Grip). Then you are probably ready for original pen mods. Try making Double-sided pen mod first, because they would usually have the Center of Gravity on Center of the Pen. Then try for single sided, which is much harder to make COG the COP.
Creativity
This is probably the question most of you want to ask. There are people who makes LED mods, retractable pen mods (ex: RSVP MX retractable) or people who make different sort of retractable (RSVP MX retractable prototype, i forgot who made it, and Lakubo Neo-REX, I made this one. They both coincidentally have same system, that when you grip the grip of the pen tight, the point of the ballpen comes out. RSVP MX Retractable Prototype was made before my Lakubo Neo-REX so he has the credits. I consider this creative.). Although, I must say that these were made because they had the experience enough to try something new.
Tip 3: Being creative comes after experience. Try for existing hard ones (ex: Anyball Retractable MX, PDS Retractable MX), then go for very complex mods that requires a lot of cutting and sanding. If you have done all the stuff above i have written so far, then you are definitely ready for being creative because now you would have the idea of how these creativity comes from. You would wonder how people found out this and that would fit so perfectly. The answer is, it was from experience. If you are experienced, then you would understand and predict that this would fit well on others. This doesn't mean experienced people can always make things right. They will still fail doing these things. One of the greatest mistake i ever made was trying to make the cap retractable and attach it to the back part of Pilot Super Grip. It failed awfully, and I had to sand it for hours trying to make it fit, and it still didn't work. Losing $2 on a pen was a big loss for me.
It is more like "I have the feeling this and that would fit" rather than "I know this and that would fit". Experience people are still human. People make mistakes. It is probably not an appropriate to ask "How do you be creative and make things fit so well?". The creativity part comes from your mind and sense, some has good creativity, some has none like me. The "how to make things fit" part would not be a proper thing to ask because it's the feeling that it would fit, and you can only achieve this through experience.
Criticism
If you think criticism is something you don't want, then you are saying that you don't want to be better.
For example, let's say someone made a very very cool pen mod with a pen that has LED light on the back and is retractable on side of the grip and looks very very cool, but has a major problem that COG is two centimeters off the COP, but the creator of this pen don't think this is any problem because of a certain style this person spins. People would say "That's some god damn sexy pen" or something similar to that and said nothing else. Let's say there's another guy who wants to make a mod that would spin good and ended up with a very very bad looking pen, but the pen is so easy to spin that even beginners can do Shadow all of the sudden. People would say "That's some lame looking mod." or something like that. Who do you think would improve? I think the one who made bad looking pen would improve. This person knows that everyone want a pen that would be very comfortable for everyone to spin. Now all he got left to do is improve the look. That's not much of a problem. However, how about the guy who made the good looking pen with all the cool features? He will not improve and continue making "unspinnable" pen that when people make the mods, they just place the pen inside a well protected strongbox. taking Criticism is very important, and when people don't say any criticism but just bunch of awing, you should think very carefully about the pen mod and think what part of the pen would generally not be accepted by people. Okay, if you are showing off you pen mod for you own satisfactions without thinking about anyone else, just yourself so that you could spin the pen according to your style, I think that's totally fine. But if you are telling other people about the pen that it's a good one, and a one that people would like, then it will not be accepted.
If you are making a mod and want people to make the mod, then you want a pen that would be accepted by everyone without regarding self matter and special circumstances.
Tip 4: Listen to what other people say about the pen. Don't get pissed off because someone wrote a huge essay of how and why the pen sucks. Actually, you should be thanking these people for writing and spending so much time trying to do their best criticizing your pen. If it's just "That pen sucks. Period, now Fuck Off", then you should get angry and click the "report" button on the bottom left of that post. If it's a long essay of how and why it sucks, then you should thank him and really read that essay very carefully, because it will definitely improve you. Even if you start out with the most craziest bad pen, if you listen to what others say, you'll understand what you have done wrong.
Summary: The good comments are comments you can ignore. Comments of heavy but specific criticism is the comments you should read carefully. The flaming comments are comments you can click on "report" button.
Japanese are very good at criticizing. If you can speak Japanese, then you should post in JEB. Japanese will always be the "polite" on net, so they will be polite to you trying to point out every single tiny information of the bad parts of the pen. That is a good thing. Although, there are people who might criticize YOU instead of the pen for sucking telling you that you make bad pen mods but you keep making new threads about it. There are people who tend to slack off the real point of the thread and just criticize you as a person. If that happens then you should say amen to yourself. I can defend you, but Japanese doesn't really show off their other opinion when the whole thread is about tens of Japanese saying the same thing that YOU suck, and keep on with the flow, for some reason. But that barely happens in JEB these days. They seem to rather ignore the thread rather than criticize. But JEB is a very good place for asking for criticism about your pen.
Basically, people criticize for a reason. They want to tell you that you have done something wrong in your mod. Don't take it as "someone hates me". That's the last thing you should do.
Afterwards
After the wall i had to go through, I started making pen mods that are mechanical pencil and retractables, or "look-alikes". Lakubo MMX MP is a good example, which there was already a pen called Lakubo MMX, but I made some minor modification making them into a Mechanical Pencil. I think this is the best I have done, which for some of you would be disappointed at how much my best is not very cool. Do things step by steps. Don't think you could become good all of the sudden. It took about an year to get to a point that I could satisfy myself.
Patience is a necessity.
FAQs
Now to the FAQs of course. For beginners, there are a lot of question on what to use and what to make. So there you go.
Q: "so knowing what parts fit to what requires experience. Does that mean that we need to try alot of pens and manually test out to see which parts fit?"
A: Not precisely, but it depends on each person. You should try things out with available junk pens to get the idea of making things fit. It is not easy to explain, but doing that at some level will make you an understanding of a "feeling" that you think this would fit that. Some people don't require doing anything other than using junk pens, and automatically understand the "feeling". Some people actually require using a specific pen. But either way, if you don't regard junk pens as pens, then you would not need to try ALOT of pens.
Q: "Eh, I would like to ask about the pros/cons of pens that are slight back/front heavy or otherwise imbalanced."
A: Let's give an example: RSVP MX. That pen has COG slightly on the back from the COP (If you use default pieces). For some people that is good, doing infinity with that trick would make great momentum enough to do many complex infinities, but for some people that is bad, because for people who is not experienced enough with RSVP MX, can not do around tricks very well. Imbalanced pens also exist: Pens that have COG in COP, but feels quite strange when spinning. This is because the placement of the weight is irregular. Most single-sided COG=COP pen mods have this "problem". Imbalanced pens are hard to do, such as Backaround Fall. For example, there might be a pen which has COG at COP, but has almost no weight on the cap, but has A fair weight in the tip. However, right before the COG has nothing but right behind the COG has this huge weight, then the pen would balance perfectly, but feels strange when spinning.
However, you can spin comfortably with these pens if you spin with them for long enough. You get used to it.
Q: "I'm new to modding and want to make a black bonkura KT. I went into a store and couldn't find anything so i decided to get a random double capped marker. It doesn't look as good but i like it. Would you consider that as being noob?"
A: Not at all, I would consider it pretty good. But I don't know about other people. If you are not going to show it off, you have one creative way of making replacements. Replacements almost always doesn't look as good as the real one. For example, when RSVP wasn't sold in Japan, many people tried to make manipulations of RSVP MX, which most of them didn't look as good as the real RSVP MX. But i still think this is a creative way to mod. There are some people, who says "I can't make Black Bonkura KT because I don't have the caps needed", but many would find replacements for caps. If you are satisfied with it, then there you go! However, it depends if everyone else would like it. Most of the time, when you like it, others like it, so there is no need to worry. I see no problem whatsoever. However, this thread is about making "New" mods, so I wouldn't consider that Black Bonkura KT with different cap as something "new", but rather a good replacement to use.
Q: "The stationary store near me sells alot of "useless" pens. Should I consider buying them and start modding?"
A: Only if you think you can make a good mod, or if you are risking your money for it. From my experience, I once bought very useless pen, but somehow was able to make a satisfying pen mod with it by using the retractable part. You should never underestimate "useless" pens. However, "useless" pens are usually "useless", and many have ended up getting nowhere. If you think you can make something out of "useless" pens, or if you are willing to risk the money believing that you MIGHT be able to make something, then you should.
This is very important for making something NEW. For example, when KAM invented RSVP V1, V2, and MX, many people must have thought RSVPs are "useless" for pen spinning at that time. However, it was KAM who thought up of placing grip inside cap and make MX. That is called creativity. Sometimes, getting a "useless" pens surprisingly and ironically make something really cool.
It's sometime good to risk something. I cannot say you shouldn't buy it, but i also cannot say you should.
Q: "Why are HGGs used? Their grips feel weird and their tip is so light. I think it hardly makes a difference. "
A: I hope when you say that, you already used it for over a month. Generally speaking, as long as MOST people consider using HGGs good, then it would generally be considered as "good", regardless of special circumstances. I'm not saying you are not normal. I'm saying you have your own thoughts about HGGs, that most people does not consider about. That is totally fine. Basically, back then when Pen Mod wasn't very popular, people must have thought that HGGs was good to use despite what you describe them. This is because they probably didn't think there were any pens around other than HGGs that will work better than HGGs when modding. Popularity also does a lot with making pen mods famous. When you search this forum, SO MANY people uses RSVP. This is because people have thought RSVPs are good from long time ago, and continues up until today. You have your own opinion. That's okay don't think too hard.
(The reason i said about using it for over month is because feeling of a grip changes after long use. HGG grip turns sticky (lack of better words) after a while instead of smooth feeling.
Q: "What are the basic tools needed for modding?"
A: Most people are fine with Handsaws, sandpapers, and some sort of hard pointy tools to make holes. Some people consider using scissors at first when they start modding. I still use scissors, but I highly recommend using handsaws and sandpapers. They are small saws that you can cut the barrel and things. Some people have special tools kit which are VERY VERY precise, that includes electrical small saw and drills, and things like that. I think a member, WTH used it.
If you don't have Handsaws and Sandpapers, you should consider using cutters (or x-knife) and nail cutters. nail cutters are good for cutting off the clip off the cap, and is also good for sanding (if the nail cutter have nail sanding). If you are okay with doing dangerous stuff, then you might as well also put the cutter into fire and heat the blade. When you cut, it would cut very very quickly (Do it quick or the melted plastic will remain on your blade or making the cutting worse). I won't take any responsibility for the injuries you acquire from using these tools.
Q: "Modding is soo expensive. (Not really a question but just share your thoughts)"
A: Depends. RSVP MX (regardless of money spent on tools) only cost about $2. However, making new mods are definitely expensive. Most newer mods these day can easily go over $5. My highest I have ever gone with a single original pen mod was $6.50. I must say that people who can make original mods with below $3 and be well received by other people are REALLY good. Most Japanese pen mod requires over 3 or 4 pens, but this is mainly because of the pens sold in Japan. That would make each original pen mod expensive. It depends on where you find pens, and what kind of pens are sold in your country. Comssa is also VERY cheap and simple as well as popular. You can't really say modding is always expensive, but it usually is so.
Q: "What is the best mod?"
A: Unfortunately, I cannot answer that question. Everyone has their own styles, whether they look for the appearance or the greatness of spinning. Some might like extra heavy mods like Dr.KT, and some might like extra light mods like Bictory. Some might like super cool looking pen mod, some might not even care about it. I don't know. You should make a poll about it or something, but you still wouldn't get the answer you want.
Q: "How do i make my mod look good?"
A: That's a hard question. Several ways. Usually, pen mod that looks good depends. Many people consider PDS Comssas cool because of the sticker and stuff. Many people also consider RSVP MX cool because the barrel is long, showing a lot of insert design. Once again, making look good depends on each person. But I consider RSVP MX cool, Comssas cool, and stuff. I don't know how to make pen mod look "good", but I can tell you how to not to make a pen mod look bad. I say that you wouldn't want to show taping (I usually don't use tapes on pen mods). If you HAVE to tape, then use some grip or other things to hide it. You also don't want to show strange spacing. It wouldn't look very cool if you have a space of plastic between the tip and the grip. You probably would want to keep the two look connected. You also would want to cut carefully. You don't want a mess of plastic shards popping out of a pen. Don't make it too complex. If you have like, to be extreme, 5 grips on different section of the pen, that would probably look very strange. You also don't want to make a pen that looks unbalanced. For example when making single-side mod, if the front part of the pen is thick, but the back part thin, that would look very awkward (Huge tip and small cap). It is always cooler if you make the front thinner than the back. You also don't want to make a mod that has different thickness even though it's a double sided mod (so much that i can't be considered double sided). You also don't want super bulky pens (think barrel but EXTREMELY thick cap like using RSVP body and Sailor Gel caps). Also think about what colors you gonna use: Pink body and dark brown grip would look bad (for me). Last step is to make a good insert (or outsert) for your pen mod.
Q: "How should I name my mod?"
A: In anyway you want. But you would probably want to name it with the pen(s) you used. It would be kinda weird if you name it "Super Angelic Blade" or something like that. You can also name it with your name!
Q: "Oh er, why are some pens more...err..."famous" than others? Such as KTs, Comssas, MX. Is it because of the low price and lack of difficulty to mod one?"
A: Dr.KT is not cheap. It's over 1800 yen (>$18). But anyway, there exist famous pen mod. There are always reason to that. RSVP MX is self-explanatory. It was because KAM made it as the first pen mod to be shown off on the internet. KAM was the first person to make a English Pen Spinning site, and also the person who made the RSVP MX. People learned off KAM's website, so of course RSVP MX would be famous. Dr.KT is famous because RYO appealed in TV showing off his pen spinning skills and talking for a while about his Dr.KT, which made it famous throughout Japan who watch TV. Comssas also have some sort of history like that. It is VERY VERY VERY hard to make a pen mod famous enough that everyone in the world knows the name. It can either be done through winning pen mod competition, or be brought up and advertised through very famous spinner, or something like that. Lack of difficulty to mod one is definitely not it. Luminous MX are famous, but hard to make. Dr.KT is high in price.
Q: "how to make a pen mod retractable but also keeping its look? what mechanism is needed for the retractable part?"
A: There's usually simple ways such as getting the thinnest retractable pen. I believe Bic Retractable Pen is capable of doing it if you cut off and sand it. Mechanism is usually the rotating-zigzag types, which each zigzag fits like a key and receiver. For example, if you want to make Grip Aviare retractable, you might want to get Bic Retractable Ballpoint Pen. Take off the back retractable part of Bic Retractable Pen and cut off the clip and scrape off the huge bump and sand it. Now you have a completely bumpless retractable part. You might place it on one side of the Grip Aviare and attach the tip to the retractable part. Such and such. I have never done it before, but i think it will work.
I want to make a FAQ on how to make new pen mods. Everyone, please help me. If it's a newbie, ask a question, and I'll do my best answering it here. If you are not a newbie, then make up a question and a solution so I could make a big FAQs here.
Pen Spinning Wiki is also a good place to go:

lol nice. Very well done. Loved it.
hopefully pending tuts section wont be spammed that much anymore.
um.. some things your might include are how to make your pen look better or something. -

Extremely long passages you got there
This isn't really going to help if people are discouraged to read all of your ideas
I'm sure you can shorten it somehow -

Well said and well thought out. Clean it up a bit, blocks of text seem to deter people a lot. Make it a bit more poignant and then i'd say stick this.

I think HS MX got popular cause it looked cool. IDK about enot mod though. lol..
Um.. bustercyl is popular cause spinnerpeem used it and he won the competition in thailand and everyone wanted one.
Dr. KT was famours cause i think ryo spun it on TV.
Comssa cause it was popular amongst koreans who use it to do their exam i think.
MX cause it was made by kam. nuff said.
correct me if im wrong please. -

Most likely though...does the Japanese Mods (SEVEN/Saizen/etc.) counts as well? People seem to like collecting those. -

yeap.
Some of the just look good. Like ayatori mod has grip cuts and its like a new thing so everyone wants one. He spins well too so people would want his mods. -

done. I hope it helps. But i never had Grip Aviaire and I'm not sure if it will work.
