Pen Modifications / Pen Modding Contest?

Hmm design a cheat pen?

Hmm what do you guys think about a monthly PenModding contest?
The judging would be public voting..

And to prevent it from being boring we could have different themes every month! Like... make the best cheat pen for school, make LED mods, make pens that are quiet and retractable.. etc etc!

    What do you think?

I would like it if the people who participated actually made decent mods, with parts everyone can get, not "no name pen only found in one store in texas"

    There could be guidelines.
I would be interested in this.
    Sounds like GPC.
maybe ask penwish about sponsering? tongue.gif

    i love modding ;__;

but... if you're asking for sponsoring. what do you need sponsorship for o_o prizes?

im interested. we should decide on the first theme

  9. iMatt

Ok. I tried setting this up a few years ago and trust me this is a LOT of work.

    1.) The community Judges

    • That means OTHER people will have to get parts to make this mod.
    • If others judge PURELY on aesthetics than it already becomes a biased win.
    • No offense, but anybody can make a FUCKING GOOD LOOKING pen with no new actual MOD.

    2.) Theme-changing

    • Theme changing is good in concept, but downside of this is each person has a different criteria for each theme.
    • Example: School-mod, to say a retractable is better than a stick pen is a matter of opinion. For school pen you'd have to consider
      • Retractable, Fixed-ink, multi-use, etc etc.
    • The solution to this is narrowing the categories down.
    • Things like, least noticeable(discreet), heavy-retractable, E2B-type mods.

Also things like "best-grip cut" have to be specified for a certain pen and which grip is used.
(keep it in a fair for all mindset)

    3.) Pen-modding rules and restrictions

    • There are a lot of things that need to figured out first.

    QUOTE
I would like it if the people who participated actually made decent mods, with parts everyone can get, not "no name pen only found in one store in texas"

    • It's that kind of mindset which limits the whole contest.
    • Needle-point and Metallic gel are good example of this, they're ONLY found in japan and very few import stores
    • They've been used in a number Japanese mods, yet they are still considered rare on UPSB.
    • Things like generic business pens that have COMPANY-LOGO with no manufacturing logo of who actually made it couldn't be used.
    • There are of course exceptions like if its OBVIOUSLY an rsvp and it's just what the person is currently using in the tutorial, of course it's fine.

    4.) Rewards

    • What do they get? Bragging rights?
    • There is only so much a person will do purely based on their own determination and will-power.
    • If you want to see the best of the best and new stuff, there has to be some incentive to do so.

    5.) Flaming

    • There has to be a lot of moderation in these kind of things.
    • Any contest-entrant who says my mod is better than yours should be revoked.
    • Every voter has to reply to what they voted, and why, otherwise it could be a guy who made 15 accounts(just an example)
    • Posting his same answer just out of hate for mod(yes I know there is a 20 post rule to vote, but you get the drift)

    ----------------
Anyways, these are some things to consider if you really want this to happen.

I like the idea of a modding contest. But do we really have to have themes? :/

What if someone has a really cool new idea that doesn't fall under any category the average person would think of? Then this person cannot use his mod idea for the contest, not matter how cool it would be.

I would suggest making it open themed...then no matter what category you are in, your mod is still valid.

I suppose if multiple contests were held, then some could have themes and some would be open to anything you can think of. Since a contest like this has never really happened here before it's probably better to have more structure for the first contest rather than making it an open-theme free for all.

GL to whoever tries to organize this...it's a lot of work.

    ban from joining?

The people who are participating has to make the mod within the time period right? They cannot use an already existing mod that they have mad that fits the theme.

This is a good idea, i also had another crazy, pointless idea:
    speed modding contest

lol, like rubix cube, u film u modding pens. Starting with the orginal materials. For example:
    1 RSVP + 1 HGG, who can produce a MX the fasted....lol

this is pointless .... crazy idea...which does no good to pen spining community tongue.gif
    so ignore me...

Ahah I remember there was something quite like that a while ago

A speed BICtory modding contest or something like that.

    another suggestion to the pool

    catergories such as
"best mod using only rsvp and bic round stic"

    or something along those lines

i guess the guidelines could be only be able to use the following pens
probably the most common pens available are g2s, rsvp, hgg, bic round stic.....

    now i'm rambling aren't i???

How about we start out with 2 categories? american pens only and one international one?
We'd have to make a list for the american pens though.. stuff like Sailors, or g3s won't be allowed...

Or just one big free for all contest?

yeh that makes sense cos everyone can make the American only pen mods with pens from their local shops. Not like this is a universal pen spinning board anyway

so yeh probly the second idea

i would rather a FFA contest.
etc: cant get bic round stics and rsvps here, but we can get bic round stic grip and g3s and plenty of other stuff here.

How bout we go with the best cheat pen for school idea? I need a good one right bout now.....

just write up some criteria an organize it an blah blah blah?

Most original or practical Use mod?

Kind of agree here. But without the 'Stupid' phrasing . . . It's kool to spin stuff other than the usual pen, but I don't think we'd go with knifing our toothbrushs or something along those lines. It's a creative thing to post a random object collab, but I'd say that the Random object is a bit to borad of a catagory.

  33. Winterlocke
    Date: Sat, Jan 10 2009 03:10:47

i think k-ryder's idea was pretty sick. Who can make a creative mod using only bic + rsvp, etc.

though... i guess we should expand that list, just cuz.. you cant make much with a rsvp and a bic. can a bic fit in a rsvp? XD

I dont know... its not like we have to exclude international spinners just cuz they're international >_>

or we can have an idea like, make a vortex pen, or a singlebody, or clicker, etc. that would be simpler?
