It's not just Viacom. It's companies that have partnered with YouTube and are trying to enforce copyright on their material. A few days ago the audio track (voice from video + music track I inserted) was removed from a video I posted 6 months ago, because I used a 20 second clip from a song. I can't even restore the original audio. I can choose another song from YouTube's archive, but it's pointless without voice. Other options they give you are to delete the video or dispute the claim, but if the copyright is upheld then your video is removed.
Also, YouTube partners can choose not to object to your usage of their material but can still claim the rights to your video. When this happens, ads are placed on your video and the company gets paid per click, and probably YouTube too. This happened to a friend of mine, whose video reached 2 million views so the company jumped at the opportunity to make advertising revenue. It could be that YouTube is beginning to clamp down on music used in any videos, but that means a ton of vids will be removed or "claimed". -
