Heroes of Tomorrow / What it takes to beat WCY

  1. Charlie
    Date: Mon, Jan 12 2009 07:57:11

Been studying up WCY's videos lately, and he's quite a good spinner. Cool style and very smooth, much better than me in those aspects. Difficulty-wise, the only thing that seems to stand out to me are his cont busts. He did a cobra bite in the asia cup vid, but that's nothing too special (to me). Creativity-wise, he hasn't done anything out of the ordinary other than using backhand bounces.

I think I might have what it takes to beat him. What do you guys think? Advice/criticisms/bashes?

Anyway, what I'm planning to do in my combo is:

Cont Triple Infinity Release x2 > TA Harmonic Fall > A Bunch of Figure 8s, Rev Figure 8s, and infinity variations in different slots > Wiper Double Bust > Cont Wiper tricky thingy I do at 00:05 in this vid http://www.upsb.info/forum/index.php?autoc...ails&id=896 > Handaround Rev > Hai Tua Trick.

It's basically a combo that utilizes a lot of direction changes, and in theory, it's pretty cool. Good enough, you think?

Btw, I've been working more on style and smoothness lately. The departments where I lack the most.

honestly, i dont like wcy that much >>
best thing i've seen him do is it palmspin bounce spiderspin hybrids
okay well as you said, i would like to emphasize, i think the most important thing for you to do is make it smooth

also, im not sure about that TA harmonic fall. though it is somewhat difficult, i think the details are difficult to see, and it may come out spammy... maybe cut it down?
then again, im not really sure, maybe a vid to see?
it'd be nice to see a rough draft/outline or something, if you felt like it

oh, also- i think you really need to get a good angle >>

Hm... well since a TA Harm Fall is basically a bunch of direction changes, I thought it'd fit in with my combo. And yeah, I'm definitely gonna use a good angle. I'm aiming for an over the shoulder view with my tripod (i'm usually too lazy to use it).

Btw, I just modded a new pen today. It glows in the dark. I'm thinking of doing a palmspin in the end, and turning off the lights. The pen would then glow in the dark and spin a few revolutions. I'd catch it and maybe turn on the lights?

  4. Shadowserpant
    Date: Mon, Jan 12 2009 08:15:30

you're gonna turn off the lights while you spin oO?
uhm if i were you i'd skip a few of them
    like..
    ta rev 1 > ta 3 > ta rev 2 > ta 4 > ta rev 3
wait which is it supposed to end with? well you get my point
hey... have you ever tried a ta rev counter? i think it may be useful to you.. but if you havent learned it yet, it isn't exactly easy to do quickly

    Hm...good thinking, I think I will.

And I can do ta rev counters, but I never liked how they looked. How would it be useful?

and I'd only turn off the lights at the end for my finisher. I think I might do a high revolution palmspin or thumbspin at the end, and at this point, I'd turn off the lights and the pen would spin the dark while glowing.

    BTW

I wonder if WCY is gonna have a hard time looking me up. Since I dont' have much vids of me on the internet and I've gone thru a few name changes. I've deleted some vids off youtube/upsb. Just in case. :]

like, is there a lightswitch you can sit next to and just flip with your other hand?

oh and i thought it might be useful because i wasnt sure which direction u wanted to end with
and im not sure if i do my ta rev counters how they're supposed to be done, but i like them, ill film one tomorrow

My lamp is right next to me and I can reach over with my left hand to turn off. I can always ask my girlfriend to help me if need be.

And a vid would be nice. :]

yeah i'd like to see your ta harmonic fall as well (the full one)
i never use them because mine look so crappy, but i think you're probably better at it than i am

  9. DaeHa
    Date: Tue, Jan 13 2009 01:01:01

biggrin.gif yay~ I was waiting for this thread.
from what you put in your first post for the general part of your combo, i like, but i agree with Shadow with the mixing up the TAs

one thing i don't like tho is the hai tua. with that trick imo it's a little anti-productive for you because that trick is just F@%K ugly and makes ones style/smoothness look even more rough and disgusting (one reason i hate spinnerpeem). key3's hybrid > hai tua

uh as for your light thing iono I think i'd avoid doing it in case someone would like declare "cheating" on you (yes it sounds stupid but hey people are unreasonable). but just me i'm not against it. tho a vid example of with and without would be nice to see

  10. Shadowserpant
    Date: Tue, Jan 13 2009 01:08:35

hai tua is fuck ugly oO?
i think maybe you've just seen bad executions of it lol
but the symmetrical backaround could be an alternative

as for the lamp part, honestly, i would go for it. if they call cheating, well, challenge it, i guess
or... it's an odd thought but maybe...
do you have access to another camera? you could have the other camera film you from another angle, with the lamp visible, and if anyone challenges you, you can sync the two vids (with bloopers) and show them the raw evidence

uh okay this is too horrible for me to do anything with it but w/e

let's just forget i mentioned it xD

Hm, seems pretty nice, but it's not a trick I can do too well, but Ionno, I might give it a try. And you don't like the hai tua trick? I was thinking of doing a hai tua ~ fl thumbindexspin > Fl ta, maybe -- tough finisher htough. would a symmetrical bak > fl ta work better? I've been working on symmetrical bak to fl ta lately. I think it looks pretty neat.

and I could probably get access to two cameras and i'll try filming a small try out with the glow in the dark thing tomorrow.

  12. Shadowserpant
    Date: Tue, Jan 13 2009 05:11:58

wait what? you mean a sym BA with an exta TA?
well im not sure why mark doesnt like the hai tua, lol, do you think maybe you could film you doing it? i guess it depends on execution style
if you make it look jerky then yeah it'll suck

  13. JC
    Date: Tue, Jan 13 2009 05:12:42

    Okay... err...
    1. No TA harmonic fall, I think that'll take up too much time of your vid (a solid 5-8 seconds?) and I dont' think it's worth it =\ plus, it's not thattt appealing... it's just cool to know that it's doable =P

    2. Don't turn off your lights =\ I dunno, I just dont' really like this idea... can't really give a reason why... I just feel like I wouldn't like it if i saw it in a combo =\... too much effort and controversy that may arise...

    3. the hai tua trick... eh... no offense, but i think it's hard to make this thing look nice and i don't think you can do it actually -.-'' just a stylistic thing... hai tua's not for you.....

    4. symmetrical backaround... how good are you with that?? like.. how consistent? cause i don't think a sym. backaround will suffice for a finisher... it's kinda blah...
-perhaps: symmetrical backaround > (on the fl ta from the symmetrical backaround) air > fl ta??
that's really tough though... and i don't know how well you can do that...

    5. Work on making your handarounds look nicer, and use those as your appeal. You seem pretty confident and consistent with them... so take advantage of that.

    6. Some infinity releases would be nice as well, but not too much. I don't think a combo with 3/4 infinity based is good... for this thing.

    7. The entirety of the combo, i think should be 1/3 handaround based (if they look nice of course... if not, cut it down to like... 1/5, cause they're still difficult, but you'll lose some style points), 1/3 infinity releases (i saw your one infinity release combo.. those were really nice ^^ ), and 1/3 of the smaller stuff you wanna put in that are unique.

Difficulty and Unique should be the two words that come to mind when someone sees this combo imo... Style, I dunno how much you worked on this, but you may not have enough time to completely make your style as nice as WCY's...
So while it's important to make the combo well rounded like WCY's, I think it's worth giving up some style points if you can excel in the categories that you are already decent in... But just get a few of the style points i guess... dont' worry about acing that section of the judging...

WCY won't know what he's up against and so he may not try as hard because you're just an unknown spinner for now. But on the flip side, he may try harder just in case. Who knows...=P... Maybe make some bad vids just to throw him off (but good enough so that it makes sense that you got in of course)

Anyway, good luck with your practicing and your battle happy.gif

i dont get why everyone hates the hai tua T_T
i really want to see him do it at least, because even though i cant, i know i could make it look nice

  15. Charlie
    Date: Tue, Jan 13 2009 05:23:22

Hm.... I'll definitely remember your words while filming JC, and I agree, I don't have the time to improve my style that much. And yeah, I guess TA Harmonic takes up too much time. Also, I'm pretty good with my hand around revs, hand arounds, and my personal trick, the moonwalk handaround, but I don't want to use all of them in one combo...

And I have a TA ~ Handaround ~ FL Thumbindexspin > FL TA recorded. I sent it for the collab though, not sure if JC would mind me posting it up or not.. I thought it looked pretty nice. :\

You make everything look nice shadow. :]

Oh and yes shadow, what I meant was a symmetrical bak with an extra fl ta at the end, with my hand spread open (the way kam does fl tas)

  16. Shadowserpant
    Date: Tue, Jan 13 2009 05:26:45

good, those are the good kind of FL TAs xD

I like the hai tua, it's an awesome finisher to an awesome combo. Now if you can combine the hai tua and that handaround > TI spin > FL TA, it'd be a sweet combo and could beat wcy.

  22. JC
    Date: Tue, Jan 13 2009 07:00:51

  23. Shadowserpant

yeah, you're right, i think if it matches the rest of the combo it's great, your discretion though, hai tua or SBA, i think either is fine

  24. Charlie
    Date: Tue, Jan 13 2009 07:06:10

The finisher is the last thing you see, and pretty important. I might go with the SBA.

And my style isn't as well developed as yours shadow. Neither do I exaggerate my spinning. I'm working on my style... I'm also extending my fingers more. Hopefully that works out nicely.

And not many people do shadow, but I'm glad you do. :]

BTW, is the collab going to be released really soon? I'd rather it was released after round 1 of the WT. Since there aren't really any vid of me out there on the internet, and I'm pretty unknown. I'd rather keep it that way...ya know?

I'm not sure if I have anything big enough to cover the whole desk. But I'll try.

And I don't like spinning on my desk, it's too high up, i'm not used to it. I can't do infinity releases well unless I stand up. :\ I filmed a good amount today, but didn't really come up with anything too nice. Will do more tomorrow.

Maybe have your chair higher? Or you can sit on a dictionary on the chair lol. As for the 1p2h stuff, you can also try to cool transitions from hand to hand. Like, I still drool at bonkura's transfers. *drools*

Yeah, that's the problem. I'm used to sitting on the floor. I should buy some really short table for spinning...

And I tried sitting on some blankets, helped a bit, but I still spun much better on the floor.

Oh, and transfers that I've played around with from time to time are mostly top spin transfers. Like shadow from right hand to left hand.

Is this angle fine? And just switching up my style a bit. Kinda hard to spin slower though.

Hmm...spinning slow isnt a good idea.

Didn't like my spinning in that vid, so I spent a minute (i'm serious, only a minute) to film something. I guess you can call it my Minute Session.

I liked the first combo's angle better. And just to look professional, make sure your background is clean, like no furniture or chairs or whatever in view so that the viewers can focus on just your spinning, no distractions or whatever. And yeah, go for the pillow thing.

Aww Charlie, it's alright, you did your best, you made an amazing video, and you made yourself a name that everyone from the other boards now know. You'll be here next year, so you can try again in WC10 happy.gif

You're right and I know. It's just passing feeling. I just had to say something. And I must say, it was nice having my team helping me through the first round and now that I've lost, a team to help me through that too.

So, thanks to everyone. Even if it was only for a short while.
