I noticed that recently, there have been a huge influx of teams on UPSB. But then, are some teams just grops, like StepMania? (no offense, Eriror).

Well I guess StepMania is more of a group than a team, but when you create a team you get you're own personal forum too discuss a own specific thing, which is why teams like StepMania have been created.

teams can be used in any way needed.

Teams imply that the members joined to carry out some action, such as compete in battles, make collabs, etc. Groups imply that the members joined out of a common interest or belief, like Facebook groups. For example, I'd consider StepMania a group, not a team.
Teams are active and groups are passive. This is why some things can be viewed as both depending on your opinion. "Moderating/Researching team" and "Moderating/Researching group" carry slightly different connotations.
