UPSB v3

Board Comments / Get rid of Spammer's bin?

  1. FripメECツ
    Date: Fri, Jan 16 2009 23:36:12

UPSB rules state that flaming/sexual content/etc are forbidden on UPSB.

Then why do we have the Spammer's bin? The level in there has sunken so deep. There aren't any funny threads anymore. Every thread is about flaming a person or sex-related things.
Now that Most Replies died I don't see any reason to keep the Spammer's bin. If people want to talk about their immature topics or flame each other they can do that on other boards or on Msn.

What kind of impression do you think a new person gets when he sees the Spammer's bin?

    QUOTE (Outlander @ Nov 10 2008, 10:48 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
If the goal is to keep the same rules across the entire board, I suppose that the spammer's bin could be removed (this is just an idea) but the Off-Topic section should probably remain so people can still post things not pertaining to PSingthat they want to share with the community, and then ups/b/ could be left un-moderated I guess.

I support you. I also feel that UPSB can do without the Spammer's Bin.

I tried pointing out, like mentioned in the UPSB rules(which no one except me read apparently dry.gif) that flaming/pornographic/profanity(even this is done outside of the SB and no one care) is forbidden. Someone replied saying that Spammer's Bin is exempt from the rules of UPSB.

    This has been discussed before:

    1. You don't have to visit the spammers bin.
    2. Would you rather have spam else where in this board?

    dude
everyone's been over this so many times
the whole POINT of the spammers bin is to stop to ignorance of rules in other sections
so if people want to break the rules, they go to the place made for them to do it
if you dont like it, stop looking at it

    1. Everybody visits the spammer's bin. It's human nature. Nosiness biggrin.gif

    2. Not an argument. If somebody would actually moderate the board as in deleting spam (posts with 1 sentence only, revives, flames) that wouldn't be a problem.

    @Shadow

Do we have a place in the USA without the laws so we can go there just to kill each other? Man... rules have a reason. And the spammer's bin BELONGS to UPSB. Even ups/b/ belongs to UPSB since there is a direct link to it.

Frip even ask Zombo they took away the spammers bin once and spam was all over the board, and what the hell is this straw-man argument comparing a country to a penspinning board.

This has nothing to do with murder in the United States, are you kidding me?
And why blame us because you can't control yourself to stay away from the spammers bin? Is UPSB responsible for all of our members' bad grades because they didn't take away the shoutbox that was distracting us?

    That's because it's TRUE
the rules in the spammers bin are simple. UPSB rules do not apply. No pornography. If a person wishes to be protected from flame in the spammers bin, he or she will be. No shocking content. If you don't like the rules of the spammers bin, then don't go in. It doesn't make sense to say it shouldn't exist just because it has different rules than the rest of UPSB.
And I don't get where you get off saying no one cares about flaming and pornography outside of the spammers bin. I seem to recall having multiple people banned for doing so.
And profanity isn't against the rules. Maybe do your research?

That's a horrible comparison 0 _ o, Spamming and killing someone is totally unrelated.
In the USA there are laws against assaulting people, but there are sports like wrestling and martial arts which involve "attacking" and assaulting your opponent.
If you and someone else have a problem with each other you can take it out in a boxing ring instead of out on the street.
Just like in the Spammers bin, when people post there they are figuratively entering the ring and should brace themselves for punches.
If you don't like to watch people punch each other, don't watch boxing.
If you don't like to see people flame each other, don't enter the spammers bin.

    first of all

SB is hidden from guests, it would be embarassing if anybody could see it
SB is also hidden from view new posts

so that means only way to see a post from there... is to click the link to enter... and by entering you agree to expose yourself to SB-level material.

its your problem if you visit SB and it offends you.

anything going on in SB is not meant to be taken seriously and this is very very clear.

not that I want this board to turn into an FPSB....but do you think if we got rid of spammers bin, and then banned everyone who spammed in the forums, we would turn into an FPSB? I don't think so...but there hasta be some way we can keep our social level as high as it is and become an insane machine that spits out crazy pen spinners like no tomorrow like FPSB....

  18. Zombo
    Date: Sat, Jan 17 2009 01:51:20

    uhh what?

FPSB has OT forum and had their own share of problems with flamers insulting others in pretty much any thread

now its much better but they always had good spinners.

if anything, GPC is a much stricter board.

all i know is in the Chinese forums(HKPSA, PSH, TWPS), there are lots of moderators checking thread. When flaming and sexual topics gets posted, mods will close the thread. Most of the time it will stop there. If a new thread is opened, then the member will get banned.

    nice arguments

OT -> place for somewhat-serious non-PS related threads
Serious Discussion -> place for (as the name says) serious discussion
Spammer's Bin -> place for everything, and as the name says - spam rolleyes.gif

i really don't see why people have problems with SB dunno.gif
sure it's been pretty lame lately, but if you dont want to see stupid threads, dont want to be flamed or dont want to read spam threads - don't go there then. if you are too curious to check it, then you can only "blame" yourself for checking it :/

The Spammer's Bin isn't a place you visit to be entertained. It's UPSB's trash can that collects junk. It's there for people to satisfy an urge to spam. Where the desire comes from, you'll have to ask them.

Naturally, only the spam-related rules (revival, double-posting, etc.) are unenforced in the Spammer's Bin. The bin is still moderated for flaming and sexually explicit content. Note that for flaming to occur, hateful intent in the flamer and umbrage in the person being flamed must be perceived by the moderators. Hate speech directed at someone who probably won't see it should also be considered flaming, but I don't know if it's treated that way at present. If two members are joking around and cussing at each other, then it isn't considered flaming. Sexual content refers not to sexually suggestive text but to pornography. But if you spot a post that is sexist (not merely sexual), then it's good practice to report it. It's one of the things I'm surprised people still tolerate.

Personal dislike of a certain sub-forum isn't an adequate reason for its removal. The sub-forum would have to detract from UPSB as a whole. If a lot of people have a problem with Spammer's Bin, then it could be accomplishing more harm than good in the long run, and the issue could be put to a vote. At the moment, you have a better case against UPS/B/, which I don't even know why it exists.

Spammer's bin should stay, it hurts no one. You can easily refrain from clicking on the link if you don't want to see it. It can be fun to post without some restrictions every once and a while, plus it is a good place to put thread for spoofs of other threads

Besides, even if something does offend you in the spammers bin none of it should be taken seriously, or affect your views of UPSB, seeing as it is by it's name a bin for spam. If it is the fact that it offends you which makes you want it to be removed then the answer is simply not to go there.
If it's the fact that it is full of spam and fail, theres a reason it's called the spammers bin.
If you take anything in there seriously remember that everything in there is BS and spam...
