Philosophy / Are you proud to spin a writing instrument?

  1. shoeman6
    Date: Tue, Jan 20 2009 22:32:49

When people ask you, what are your hobbies?
    How do you answer them?
I usually avoid talking about penspinning seeing as very few people understand what it is and think that it is a waste of time, instead I talk about music, or reading and drawing etc.
what do you do when the question is raised, what are you hobbies, what do you do with your free time?
Do you mention everything and then add on penspinning as a side note? or highlight your penspinning as something unique and different and special about yourself.
Are you "proud" to be a penspinner?

I would say something along those lines too... because basically a lot of mods are parts of pens thrown together... unless it actually writes it wouldn't be called a "pen", so if it doesn't write then it wouldn't be called penspinning...

i actually say pen spinning before i say violin, even though i've been playing the violin for +7 years
most people are impressed with the psing, plus, its easier to demonstrate (mainly because i dont carry a violin in my pocket)
actually, i carry a guitar pick in my wallet
if they say i have no life, i just say screw you XD

i dont mention it to people i barely know
because the first thing they say undoubtedly is "you have no life"
    pretty much 100% guaranteed
so i say listening to music, tennis etc...
but i spin my pen and they go like whoa wtf howd u do that
    then i talk about it

funny how i put penspinning as my hobby on fb

You know, the people that pen spin and are afraid to mention that as their hobbies are usually the people who want to be like everyone else, people who jump on the bandwagon, people who end up being the followers
Those people who are proud enough to mention pen spinning as one of their hobbies are the people who have more self-confidence, not only in pen spinning but in life; the people who end up being leaders wink.gif

Anyways, I usually say tennis and pen spinning, but emphasize tennis more biggrin.gif

    not necessarily.
a lot of penspinners dont have confidence, hence they stay at home and spin. avoiding interactions with people
BUT that doesnt apply to all
and i gotta say... penspinning is unique.

Well if you're applying to a job or doing a questionnaire, it should not matter what they think about PSing because, one, they don't know who you are, and second, if a job turns you down because you pen spin, that's not the kind job you want in the first place.

I try not to emphasize pen spinning too much. In fact, I don't even say pen spinning because that sounds all weird. I mention everything besides pen spinning, then just do it. I don't show off my pen spinning because then I would get creepy followers. Then those creepy followers will branch off, creating more followers. Then before I know it, I have minions of failures. I am proud to be a spinner, yes, but I don't want to teach people or have people come up to me and show me their failure of an attempt for a new trick and their relatively easy combo.

  42. Valt
    Date: Wed, Feb 4 2009 16:17:28

Well in general unless someone comments or asks about it directly in class or something I wouldn't normally talk about it. This isn't really due to pride but I've tried explaining it to someone, and its pretty difficult, so I generally avoid doing so if possible. I've found the first thing people comment upon is the pen, usually I spin a metal commssa or mmx, and the fact that PSers mod their pens to better suit their needs usually brings about the typical laugh, like it's silly or something. Taking a step back it is a bit silly, but it's a hobby and who gives a shit. Another thing I've noticed is how different reactions are from girls than they are coming from a guy. Guys generally are not interested, or they thing it's pretty crazy, and in the rare case they want to know more about it. Girls tend to be a bit less open minded towards it, it usually ends up in them laughing about it or rolling their eyes saying "oh, that's cool". This bring me back to my previous statement about how I don't really bother explaining it to people anymore, unless they actually show some genuine interest in knowing more about it.

As a matter of pride I'd say sure I'm proud to PS, it's something very few people do, or even can do if they tried. Having a unique skill is what makes us special, you feel both like you belong to a smaller community (here, us) and you feel you proud to be set apart from others. This feeling varies from person to person, but I've found that I like being different than others, or I like being able to do things that others can't. But overall, pride comes from our own goals and accomplishments, learning on you're own terms and achieving that new trick is rewarding. We, or at least I feel proud of the results of my investment of time and effort, and on the rare occasion that someone is really wowed by spinning makes it all worth it.

Although ignoring the critics of pen spinning may be a good way to avoid confrontation, why not explain WHY we're proud to spin a pen? For instance, a few people in my school say pen spinning is rather nerdy, although they play video games.

So, in my case, I ask: What makes pen spinning better?
(this is probably belonging in another thread >.> sry)

Using logic and debating will help others understand and appreciate pen spinning more, and in turn help us feel good about doing what we do, unless they're hard headed people. biggrin.gif

Yes I am proud to be able to spin a writing instrument as it makes me unique among my area but then again knowing that someone somewhere on the other side of the world is doing the same thing and getting that same feeling.

    QUOTE (shoeman6 @ Jan 20 2009, 05:32 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
When people ask you, what are your hobbies?
    How do you answer them?
I usually avoid talking about penspinning seeing as very few people understand what it is and think that it is a waste of time, instead I talk about music, or reading and drawing etc.
what do you do when the question is raised, what are you hobbies, what do you do with your free time?
Do you mention everything and then add on penspinning as a side note? or highlight your penspinning as something unique and different and special about yourself.
Are you "proud" to be a penspinner?

Yes i am proud just because all the people at my school come up to me saying how do you do that it's fun but it gets annoying on how they are always asking and all i can tell them is practice

im with you i try to avoid the subject and just say my other hobbies because no one knows what it is and some people just think of it as a nerdy pen sport

Yeah, I'm proud. It's a fun sport. Me and my friend always do these double things at school where we take turns doing sick combos then toss it to each other and the other person catches it and does another combo. It's a good head-turner happy.gif
