Philosophy / Are you proud to spin a writing instrument?
-
Date: Tue, Jan 20 2009 22:32:49
When people ask you, what are your hobbies?
How do you answer them?
I usually avoid talking about penspinning seeing as very few people understand what it is and think that it is a waste of time, instead I talk about music, or reading and drawing etc.
what do you do when the question is raised, what are you hobbies, what do you do with your free time?
Do you mention everything and then add on penspinning as a side note? or highlight your penspinning as something unique and different and special about yourself.
Are you "proud" to be a penspinner? -
Date: Tue, Jan 20 2009 22:35:01
I AM PROUD TO BE A PENSPINNER
its like the first thing I mention, since like no one knows what it is its easy to impress them if there is a pen handy, then I mention other hobbies like guitar and what not -
Date: Tue, Jan 20 2009 23:19:52
i say miniature baton twirling obviously
-
Date: Tue, Jan 20 2009 23:30:37
Of course I'm proud. don't tell me you're not?
and I mention it on a side note -
Date: Wed, Jan 21 2009 01:41:40
haha..a miniature batonnice answer.. ill do the same haha...tnx sadistic^ _^

I would say something along those lines too... because basically a lot of mods are parts of pens thrown together... unless it actually writes it wouldn't be called a "pen", so if it doesn't write then it wouldn't be called penspinning... -

Not all of us spin buster CYLs you know -
Date: Wed, Jan 21 2009 03:16:02
i actually say pen spinning before i say violin, even though i've been playing the violin for +7 years
most people are impressed with the psing, plus, its easier to demonstrate (mainly because i dont carry a violin in my pocket)
actually, i carry a guitar pick in my wallet
if they say i have no life, i just say screw you XD -
Date: Wed, Jan 21 2009 03:32:08
ehh i sorta am but at the same time no
i dont mention it to people i barely know
because the first thing they say undoubtedly is "you have no life"
pretty much 100% guaranteed
so i say listening to music, tennis etc...
but i spin my pen and they go like whoa wtf howd u do that
then i talk about it
funny how i put penspinning as my hobby on fb -
Date: Wed, Jan 21 2009 03:50:35
Im a pround spinner lol first thing i mention
-

yeah people say i have no life when i tell them that i ps
but when they see me ps, they get impressed
i dunno though, i mostly use it as a sidenote
sometimes i use it as my hobby, but not all the times -

hey... I was never specific but seriously, a lot of mods don't look like pens at all, just 'cause they're made from pen parts doesn't mean they're pens... lol... -
Date: Wed, Jan 21 2009 09:53:48
Of course.I won't talk a lot about it though since most of the people have no idea what it is.It's just funny to see people call others nolifer and shit for ex my classmates : nolife blah blah and after a while they all started to try thumbaround and fail
-

Some people like it, most people hate it... It's a hobby, screw everyone else who doesnt respect that.
-
Date: Thu, Jan 22 2009 03:06:51
I'd say I'm somewhat proud to be a penspinner. I say it as my hobby sometimes but not all the time.
-
Date: Thu, Jan 22 2009 03:34:53
You know, the people that pen spin and are afraid to mention that as their hobbies are usually the people who want to be like everyone else, people who jump on the bandwagon, people who end up being the followers
Those people who are proud enough to mention pen spinning as one of their hobbies are the people who have more self-confidence, not only in pen spinning but in life; the people who end up being leaders
Anyways, I usually say tennis and pen spinning, but emphasize tennis more -

i wish i had this thing called confidence i always can never step up on the things i love to do T^T
on topic: i usually tell them i pen spin most of the time. Since no one believes me i do a sport when they see how weak i look i tell them i do a hobby most of the time -

Its cool and my friends like it so what else ? , as NoobishPenspinner said ....QUOTEbut when they see me ps, they get impressed -

The term "Pen Spinning" is weird and people look at you..all weridly when you tell them that (here) because the only things poeple do here is study, study and learn an instrument. That's all. The have never heard of manipulations and other stuff. I hate to live here

you can say your instrument is your pen!
well when people ask me my hobbies I say there's too many, but I'd spit out PSing or papercraft, programming or whatever. not too many people know what PS is at my college though (maybe I might make a club over here ) -

Right, or I was thinking, taking the Kam approach and calling it obect manipulation or contact juggling to make it sound more proffessioanl and intelligent.

not necessarily.
a lot of penspinners dont have confidence, hence they stay at home and spin. avoiding interactions with people
BUT that doesnt apply to all
and i gotta say... penspinning is unique.
its better than saying "i like to watch movies and hang out" lol -

That's because they don't know realize that pen spinning can be a hobby. They probably just think it's something you can do when you are bored. Be a pioneer and show them that pen spinning can be fun! -

For me it's either penspinning, rubik's cube, computer graphics, or computer programming. Any way they say something like "You have no life" or "You are a total geek"
To answer the question, of course. I am the only one that can actually do it in my school(everybody else has the jerkiest fingerpass you will ever see.) I think it's pretty special. -

I don't mean like when OTHER kids ask you, I mean when like an adult asks you, or you are presented with a written questionnaire, when applying for a job, etc.?

Well if you're applying to a job or doing a questionnaire, it should not matter what they think about PSing because, one, they don't know who you are, and second, if a job turns you down because you pen spin, that's not the kind job you want in the first place.
As far as adults go.......what can they do anyways? -
Date: Fri, Jan 30 2009 18:23:25
im proud about pen spinning because i can do what others cant ...
-
Date: Fri, Jan 30 2009 23:42:11
Sadly, no. I don't spin one that writes.
-
Date: Sat, Jan 31 2009 03:25:23
I try not to emphasize pen spinning too much. In fact, I don't even say pen spinning because that sounds all weird. I mention everything besides pen spinning, then just do it. I don't show off my pen spinning because then I would get creepy followers. Then those creepy followers will branch off, creating more followers. Then before I know it, I have minions of failures. I am proud to be a spinner, yes, but I don't want to teach people or have people come up to me and show me their failure of an attempt for a new trick and their relatively easy combo.
-
Date: Sat, Jan 31 2009 04:34:05
@Wriggle, i feel exactly the same . at school i dont even spin too much or else crowds of people will start asking me how to do it and start doing doing passes while waving their hands around trying to make the pen "spin".

I AM PROUD TO BE A PEN SPINNER,
But most ppl think that it is weird and wastes time and money, but imo, it doesn't, it is satisfying to spin something, like books and stuff like that. I would just mention that a s a side note -

alot of people think im a huge Fob because of PS
i just think its an addiction/hobby (: -
Date: Tue, Feb 3 2009 05:46:53
i don't think it'd be very wise to mention your hobby of penspinning everywhere you go...people'd think you're obsessed (even if you are, it's not exactly something you'd want to advertise). i only mention it if i'm purposely trying to sound wacky w/e.

Well in general unless someone comments or asks about it directly in class or something I wouldn't normally talk about it. This isn't really due to pride but I've tried explaining it to someone, and its pretty difficult, so I generally avoid doing so if possible. I've found the first thing people comment upon is the pen, usually I spin a metal commssa or mmx, and the fact that PSers mod their pens to better suit their needs usually brings about the typical laugh, like it's silly or something. Taking a step back it is a bit silly, but it's a hobby and who gives a shit. Another thing I've noticed is how different reactions are from girls than they are coming from a guy. Guys generally are not interested, or they thing it's pretty crazy, and in the rare case they want to know more about it. Girls tend to be a bit less open minded towards it, it usually ends up in them laughing about it or rolling their eyes saying "oh, that's cool". This bring me back to my previous statement about how I don't really bother explaining it to people anymore, unless they actually show some genuine interest in knowing more about it.
As a matter of pride I'd say sure I'm proud to PS, it's something very few people do, or even can do if they tried. Having a unique skill is what makes us special, you feel both like you belong to a smaller community (here, us) and you feel you proud to be set apart from others. This feeling varies from person to person, but I've found that I like being different than others, or I like being able to do things that others can't. But overall, pride comes from our own goals and accomplishments, learning on you're own terms and achieving that new trick is rewarding. We, or at least I feel proud of the results of my investment of time and effort, and on the rare occasion that someone is really wowed by spinning makes it all worth it. -

You could go on Wowowee.
Also, I am proud to spin cause I've only been spinning for a few months and I haven't learned a single combo yet, and still, when I do the fundamentals people stop and say, "Wow! How did you do that." And I end up showing them again without telling them how to do it -

yes....but i don't wanna talk about it....peopel keep on asking "is that a pen? why is it too long?" so i don't wanna talk about it.
-
Date: Fri, Mar 27 2009 15:14:26
I am proud to tell people I ps but here almost nobody has any idea what I'm talking about. I look especially stupid if I don't have a pen on me. All this, combined with the fact that I'm not all that great at psing, makes people think, and say, that I have no life. Besides this, I will always speak up if people talk about psers or if they ask me what my hobbies are.

anyways, if you weren't proud to be a pen spinner, why are you doing it? if people make fun of you, then ignore them. now if they're going to beat you up over it (pretty pathetic reason for someone to beat someone up), then obviously don't do it in front of them. *shrugs* -

Although ignoring the critics of pen spinning may be a good way to avoid confrontation, why not explain WHY we're proud to spin a pen? For instance, a few people in my school say pen spinning is rather nerdy, although they play video games.
So, in my case, I ask: What makes pen spinning better?
(this is probably belonging in another thread >.> sry)
Using logic and debating will help others understand and appreciate pen spinning more, and in turn help us feel good about doing what we do, unless they're hard headed people.

Yeah, I'm proud. It's a fun sport. Me and my friend always do these double things at school where we take turns doing sick combos then toss it to each other and the other person catches it and does another combo. It's a good head-turner
