Forum Games / 3 Card Blind # 1

Magic: The Gathering - Subgame

Zombo posted this a while back, and due to the lack of Forum Games currently running, I thought I'd see if I could get some people to play this.

So, what exactly is Magic: 3 Card Blind? 3CB (as I will refer to it hence forth) is a very simply game of Magic. You only get 3 cards to work with. Those three cards must include your win condition and the Mana to play what you want to. As such, card like Black Lotus, far from being banned, are highly useful. In fact, many deck run two Black Lotus!

Also, there are a few minor rules changes. First, both players play with their hands revealed, and of course only draw three cards. There is also no penalty for not being able to draw a card, since you essentially do not have a library. Oh, and any "random" effect will always go in the opponents favor, to prevent random luck wins.

Basically, you submit your three card Magic: The Gathering deck, and I will play each deck against each other round robin style. Each matchup will consist of two games, one where each deck goes first. A win earns you three points, a draw 1 point each, and a loss, none. The player with the highest score after each match is declared the winner.

For more on rules of 3CB (if you don't know how to play Magic to begin with, then I don't suggest trying to understand this...), as well as deck ideas check out this site: http://3cb.dratitall.com/index.html
I strongly suggest checking out the "3 part 3CB primer" for tips on how to build a deck and play. Also check out the rules and banned lists page. All cards up through Lorwyn not mentioned there are legal, for now. If you submit an illegal deck, I will reject it.

So, if you are interested, all you need to do is PM me your 3 Card deck. You may include an exlanation of how it works as well, however it is not necessary. Also please note that I have a lot of experience with MTG, and therefore each deck will be played as best as possible. Due to the little amount of variation possible, I will ensure the best possible outcome each deck can achieve. Read the 3CB primer articles if you're interested in how action, or lack there of, can often at least get a draw out of a strange game.

If you have more questions on the rules, ect. feel free to ask, and I'll try to clarify. Its not really as complicated as it first looks, if you've played MTG.

The deadline to submit is Friday night, 10/26/07 at 11:59pm. However, if you go over the deadline by a bit, I probably won't be doing pairings until the next day anyway...

I hope that we get enoguh people to play, so that it will be interesting. I will also be submitting a deck (however its not possible to cheat, so don't worry). I'll post the results ASAP after that. I'm not gonna bother explaining every game as that would take ages, but if you disagree with the results of a game bring it to my attention and we can discuss the matter.

    Good luck all!

Oh, and just a note, DO NOT POST YOUR DECKS HERE!!! If you do people will certainly make decks that can beat yours.

Well technichally I guess you don't have to. There are decks that always achieve a draw, but since both players will get 1 point, and a win gets you three... you don't have much chance of winning. "Win Condition" is anything that will let you win the game, besides decking since that doesn't work in 3CB. You could go with creatures, direct damage, poison counters, or any number of others... I'd personally love to see a Phage the Untouchable deck... since I love her... but I doubt thats very likely.

3 submissions thus far, including my own. For an interesting game we really need at least 8+ otherwise the metagame will be super boring.

phage is useless because it doesn't matter if you kill the enemy in 2-3 turns or in 20 turns, since the enemy only has 3 cards! so it's better to go with less powerful cards, as long as you make sure they work.

    I know... sad.gif Doesn't mean it wouldn't be cool...

I still remember the game I threw her in my black/white deck on a whim (long before orzhov guild). Game stalled with a huge number of creatures on the board. So I drew her, played her, played unquestioned authority to give her pro-creatures and attacked for the win. Would have been way cooler if my opponent haddn't happened to have 4 health though...

Up to 4 submissions 5 submissions. And remember guys, you don't necessarily need a combo. In fact any sort of combo that could win turn 1 is auto-banned. Simple disruption on the other hand could be very effective...

Whoops, got another while typing. 5 submissions.

Running out of time to submit guys! It would be great if we had some more people... and its not like its a huge time commitment.

If you're interested, you've got until at least midday tomorrow, since I'll be out all morning.

Wait, is it a 60 card deck made up of only 3 cards? Or is it literally a deck with only 3 cards, 1 of each?

you have a hand of 3 cards, a deck of 0 cards, but you cannot lose by being outdecked.

you can have 3 times the same card if you want, too.

so what happens in round 2 do you draw a random card...(of the 3) or do you never gain any cards?

Well I'm looking at some of the decks in the archive and they play no lands (or another form of getting mana), yet the rules say:

"Those three cards must include your win condition and the Mana to play what you want to."

I'm interested, so please don't start yet Eburt, I'm just trying to figure everything out.

you never draw cards, unless you manage to put some of your cards into the deck.

shortassassin: check again. If they don't have a land, surely must they include some form of mana like black lotus or mox. Unless their whole deck is 0 mana.

    Nope. Check it out. http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/showthread.php?t=22998
Second deck, 3 1cc cards, no land.

this is because that game is run on a special format variant:

    QUOTE
THE NEXT TOURNAMENT WILL BE A SPECIAL FORMAT!!!
AND WATCH OUT IT HAS CHANGED.
Note that Force of Will and Foil are banned this week.
With your decklist please choose one of the following:
*You begin the game with three 1/1 Artifact creature tokens which count as all five colors and must attack each turn.
*You start the game at 40 life.
*Spells you play cost of any color less.
*Whenever a source you control would deal damage, it deals twice that damage instead. However, if you choose this double-damage bonus your deck must be Standard-legal (Kamigawa, RAV, 9th) with the exception of Black Lotus and Mishra's Factory, which you may also use.
*Creatures your opponents control get -1/-1
*You start the game with two Lotus Petals in play.
*Creatures you control gain Vigilance and First Strike (HINT HINT this is good with Mishra's Factory )

AFAIK Eburt runs the vanilla version without those rules.

Oh ok. I'll be submitting my deck soon Eburt.

Ok submitted my deck. There is only one thing I'm concerned about with this forum game, and that is how well the moderator, Eburt in this case, knows the rules. I'm guessing it won't be that big of a deal considering they are only 3 card decks, so nothing too complicated will be going on, but ya never know.

    Date: Sat, Oct 27 2007 18:09:57

thats why you submit a description along with the deck to explain its winning strategy.

  21. ShortAssassin
    Date: Sat, Oct 27 2007 18:14:09

Yes but your cards will be interacting with the other player's cards. Can't account for that in your description.

Damn I have three decks I wanna try lol. Can I submit more than 1 smile.gif

well it doesnt matter, because after eburt posts up all the results, you can double-check.

  24. Eburt
    Date: Mon, Oct 29 2007 01:30:58

Indeed, feel free to recheck, and challenge. I'm not going to post synopses of each match though unless it is desired. And for the record, I'm currently working on getting DCI Judge certification... I know Magic rules pretty well.

Anyway, I'm going to do them now... it shouldn't take that long, only 7 submissions. Results will be up in a while.
