Woopidoo.
Sorry for being late, had trouble with the codec my DV-camera produced so I couldn't even watch the combo on my computer. Had to go to sleep yesterday night, worked all day today, and now it's fixd' and uploading to YouTube. -

lulz...
it seems like all the good spinners who are against weaker spinners are holding back....cept for Minwoo lolz... -
Date: Sun, Jan 25 2009 18:00:28
you are right, ssEno's vid has a little lag, well...
i was just wondering, did 12ve saw s777's video or did s777's saw 12ve's video? funny...they had some similar left hand moves, lol
peem's finisher is fucking crazy, but i think 3Shine still have a chance
lastly, need to ask again, about over time, do they just directly get disqualified? -
Date: Sun, Jan 25 2009 18:18:34
There is no clip with overlength.nvm that lol
I think Peem is out... o_O" 3Shine was too good...THPSC was great tooo..

minwoo clearly used the entire 26 seconds of his video -

Hey guys,
Yeah i noticed a few videos were a little over, i spoke to a few of the people and opponents befor ehand and they said they didnt mind so i wont be disqualying anybody at the moment, which is cool because i dont like doing that.
To be honest i cant believe Crew or A13X's videos werent mentioned, Crew did something pretty impressive.
Anyways, good job for everyone in the first round, very impressive combos.
Good luck -

why isn't this thread getting a million posts a minute??? nobody interested in WT all of a sudden? too worried about sharing their opinions? wut?
I hope 12ve beats S777, but the match is close enough that it came down to bias for me to decide lolz....
I hope 3Shine wins too Frip (btw...golumsk8's spinnin looked a lot like you...), but spinnerpeem actually made a reasonable combo this time..... -

OMG 3SHINE IS MY HERO
I'm also very surprised at KTH's video, I think he'll beat ZUNDA he was much smoother. Who else... Stuhl will take it no doubt, 12ve vs s777 I'm gonna have to go for s777 12ve's combo was great but you've got to just appreciate s777's spinning. And I'm just gonna have to say that I'm highly disappointed with JEB I knew they weren't going to be a driving force in this but all their vids were just meh =/. -
Date: Sun, Jan 25 2009 19:37:40
holy crap... these guys actually ARE the best! I didn't have time to watch all the videos, but it looks like these are gonna be some close matches!
so when will we find out who moves on and who doesn't? -

I really really liked Stuhl's too, but Rex's korean mini combos were as good as Chau's, So I wouldn't put it past one of the judges to choose him over Stuhl. Thank goodness KTH got a non-shitty camera at long last, I was gunna cry if my eyes had to suffer through that again. I hope Sfsr wins just cause I luv him and his spinnin, but Voltaic is actually rather good...

also great job from TWPS, they have a good chance of all win -

Hmm I think the over time combos should be handeled this way (IF there is a problem with them!)
the Judges only look at the first 25 seconds of the combo..like..you ignore the last second For example: You'd ignore the last fl ta from Minwoo lol.
But w/e
Ohh.. 3Shine and 12ve should win... I really hope they'd win PiRes was pretty awesome too...Chau will really have a problem XD -

Lol, I agree with the candy canes part. I had a sudden urge for sweets after watching dongza's vid.
12'ves vid was lovely, he really did his best. s777 on the other hand, I expected better. But I still think it'd be a tough decision.
3shine also put up a really nice fight against spinnerpeem. I personally don't like his style, but the combo itself was just amazing.
And go vic and eri. Awesome combos from both of them. I really liked vic's pen. I expected better from chau, but his opponent didn't seem up to par...
And woot, minwoo for WT champ! Aborroll's a good spinner and all, but he got his ass handed to him by minwoo. Fucking insane -- even if it was a second over the limit.
And goddam, too many insane combos. I don't think I'll stand a chance. Wish the world tournament took place at a later time. More time for me to improve and stand a better chance against these skills from beyond monsters.
I think I had too much to say and ended up spilling out gibberish. Ahh well... -
Date: Sun, Jan 25 2009 21:25:39
Ok, so here are I guess the combos or spinners that made me think "I should probably say something about that":
- Eriror and Minwoo.... both awesome, great difficulty... do I smell a rematch coming soon?
- Fratleym <3 Absolutely lovely ^^
- Stuhl was nice... that isolated wiper and stuff..
- Peem... well, the finisher was crazy indeed, but the combo itself just didn't made me say "wow" or anything... so dunno, I guess I'll have to wait and see
- Candy power Dongza It looks like he's spinning a candy XD
- 12ve Vs S777: no idea who's going to take that one. epic battle indeed (I think the decision wasn't quite random here.... )
- ZUNDA: really liked the combo to be honest, I hope he'll defeat KTH ^^"... almost the only spinner I liked from JEB =\ (liked as in thought his combo was really good, or special in a way)
- Meteor... I hope they won't disqualify him or something, such a great spinner and combo
- vic.... after I saw his combo, I was like- "wait.... wut?" dunno why lol. Nice to see him spin a MX though ^^
- Answer was also nice... had lots of aesthetic appeal.
- Charlie- Beginning was cool, middle was groovy, and the finisher was really nice.... Lovely, absolutely lovely
Lulz, that's was quite fun
I must say I'm disappointed a bit with all the "JEB stars" not being in here, though I know they simply can't, but still.... so many spinners I wanted to see.... not saying the other guys from JEB aren't good or something of course ^^" -

Thanks reso. I was feeling a bit bad about the finisher though. Not too clean as I'd like.
And I agree, the lack of jeb stars is disappointing. Doesn't feel like a real WT 09. -

edit: I haven't ever had as much trouble with a video as this. In the file of the one uploaded now, the last part of the song is included, but once uploaded to youtube it's cut off. If I convert it to any other format than .mov, the color profile gets messed up and everything looks red. If I upload another version of it, it only includes the spinning itself not the fade from and to black.

and what will happen if Zunda/12ve wins KTH/s777 hmm this should be interesting , both are really close matches
THPSC go-go-go !!! -

Lack of JEB stars.. If only SEVEN was competing and PS-728 didn't retire..
And Sunrise isn't in it either.. does he have exams or something? -
Date: Mon, Jan 26 2009 03:10:47
Yeah probably cause of Exams...
plus spinners like SEVEN and kUzu don't go on JEB often, a lot of them probably never knew about the WT -

i guess you guys didnt really follow up on the threads...
yes they have exams so they cant participate (which i think is kinda lame excuse)
also, Sunrise? i havent even seen him in a single collab for over a year -

lot of korean spinners are asking why there videos are in so low quailty

my analysis of the battles:
-------------------------------------
Rarka vs Ryan: No doubt Rarka takes this one, high difficulty, loves the spin transfer (over the top of left hand thumbindex), only thing i didnt like is the stop at :13, I thought it didnt look very good. Ryan's video is decent, nothing more nothing less. It has some rough patches too. -> Rarka
Alan vs Eriror: Alan's combo was pretty good. I like the effortless style and the linkages of the middle section. I didn't like the fact that the pen goes off-screen partially and I would have liked more rotations at the end. Eriror's combo was at a superior level IMO. Excellent 1p2h which raises the difficulty quite a bit, the transfer left right was simple but at least it was pretty smooth. The ending was a bit forced, you can see it wasn't caught cleanly since the pen is caught way out of COP. -> Eriror
HwaShin vs Fratleym: Fratleym dominates this battle outrageously. He is like the Wagner of Pen Spinning; his combos are so complex you will need several views to grasp it, and even then you will notice something new every time you watch it. Execution wise I thought it was only passable though, you can see some hiccups like at :06 and I think the final catch could be a bit better. HwaShin camera is not very good, the combo looks smooth but not very varied (3 bakfall-ish sequences :/) -> Fratleym
Stuhl vs Rex: This battle is really good IMO. Stuhl's combo was really tricky; a lot of interesting ideas like the cobra catch, use of table, two-handed spinning, all done quite stylishly. Rex's combo was a bit like the opposite; it relied on power, speed, agility. However I'm not convinced the left hand intervention was any use? It seems that he did some kind of around trick and immediately after the left hand goes in the screen, the pen reverses direction, but I can't tell if it was because of the hand... I thought the ending was quite cool and an interesting way to do a charge (I think?). Because Stuhl's concepts were not "outstanding" IMO... -> Rex
Aborrol vs Minwoo: Aborrol a decent combo with appreciable difficulty, however it contains 3 (more like 2.5) mistakes which is inacceptable against someone like Minwoo. The later's combo is very good. Execution wise it is not perfect but the difficulty is tremendous and it's just one hard sequence after the other. I didn't like the opening trick the way it was presented because it didn't generate enough spin on the transfer to segue directly without having to "repush" again. -> Minwoo
Spinnerpeem vs 3Shine: Very good battle which is actually a lot closer than it looks. I've seen people complain that his (peem) combo is really unbalanced; I don't think that's a bad idea. In order to make the finish look even better, you need to put some contrast. Plus it's not like the rest of the combo is awful; it doesn't have any mistakes, it's just not very memorable. However, I suppose you could argue that with the quality of the finisher, there wasn't much that could be done in the former part of the combo that could overshadow the finish... So I think for latter rounds peem should aim for a structure with an impressive intro, calm and short middle section (maybe more technical linkages), insane finisher. 3Shine's combo is really good too. I really like the idea of having the wrench in the background. It is like a foreshadowing of the intent of the combo. Without it, it might not have been obvious that the various tricks 3S performs are wrench-like motions. The wrench as a prop in the background become a symbolic element and an integral, albeit passive, part of the combo itself. This will yield high effectiveness score IMO. As for the combo itself, I thought the transition at :04 was really nice. I didn't like the transition at :09, it took too long to prepare. Furthermore, the pen goes out of screen at :12 and again at :18. Because of these mistakes and the exceptional quality of the finisher of peem... -> Spinnerpeem, but 3S is unlucky.
Outsider vs Dongza: Dongza has a great power combo from him as usual, although I think he will need to step up big time for the rest of the tournament. Outsider's combo is pretty standard (except for that huge rotation), but pretty good too. -> Dongza, but barely, what saves him is his great finisher, he will need to do a lot better for the next rounds.
Mist vs Papini: Mist makes a risk-free combo, I don't really like the angle, it's hard to see the finish. Papini's combo was alright but because of two fatal mistakes, I don't think he can expect to win this. -> Mist
S777 vs 12ve: Close battle. I think the intro of s777's combo was a bit dragging, but the arm around is excellent, albeit the mistake at the exit and the finish is insane... I love the way the hand jerks with the pinky straight and the pen floating on it, very nice effect, although I would have like 1 more iteration added to it. 12ve's combo was also very creative also, I especially like the pop on the back of the hand. I think the transfer at :06 is supposed to look like the pen is not moving at all but it doesn't really turn out this way so it looks a bit weird and sudden. Because of the high difficulty of the armaround and the finisher -> s777 but I would not be surprised if 12ve wins.
ssEno vs x1213: Disappointing combo by Eno IMO. Not very polished, you can see mistakes in simple tricks like tipped sonic. I didn't really like the big hand movements, they weren't very effective. X1213 is very very solid, a lot of difficult linkages, finish is very good although I think it should have been "rock-paper-scissor" instead of "rock-paper-rock" (fist, palm, fist). -> X1213, easily
ZUNDA vs KTH: Not much to say on this battle. I think ZUNDA made a combo with solid technique with a great stucture which effectively highlighted the couple of strong points like the intro, the cont midbaks, the finisher. KTH pulled off a pretty cool combo with a GOOD camera which is almost perfectly smooth, very nice triangle-pass-fall-harmonic (?) and good finisher. -> KTH
A13X vs Meteor: I think A13X has really good technique and some difficult moves but I did not feel his combo was particularly exciting... maybe a structural problem or a style deficience. The two aerials at :15 look a bit hacky. Meteor's combo on the hand exudes style, love the mini-sequence starting at :05 which appears so innocent yet cannot go unnoticed with the fingers disappearing reappearing above the pen. Rest of the combo feature some pretty good tricks. -> Meteor
ZzaJae vs Supawit127: ZzaJae's camera is horrible... I'm not convinced his combo is smooth and his left hand interventions looked a bit too gimmicky to me... Supawit made a great power combo, the strong point being the impossible sequence at :18... -> Supawit127, without a doubt
Romang vs Gisele8: I think Romang is the best PDS spinner in the WT. His combo is alright I guess, it's not perfectly smooth and it doesn't really show much but the finisher is kinda cool I guess. A "meh" video. Gisele8's video was a bit better I think. I didn't really like the constant hand motions, found them distracting, but the combo is solid. -> Gisele8
Rafe vs Skonix: Rafe's mod looks horrible IMO, didn't really like the initial isolation because it's used again later on in a more convincing fashion, perharps it should have been in reverse rotation for better effect. I really like the pause at :05, looks very good IMO. Skonix's video was OK but not very researched. It's a bit boring and not very varied and nothing really stands out. -> Rafe
Neophine vs Katix: I really didn't like Neophine's background. Half the screen being dark + Shadow makes it very hard to see the combo. Execution was not perfect, there are at least 2 unwanted pauses in there. The combo itself was not super outstanding IMO, but I liked the ending. I thought Katix was a bit bland, it had good technique, but it wasn't showing off much... it was a bit too safe. -> Neophine, but I don't feel strongly about this result
Littleboy vs Pumphead: I liked Littleboy's video. Each trick seems to flow logically into the next. I like the bounce using the phalanx, but I didn't like the turn of the hand right after. The finisher looks a bit weird too. Pumphead has a good combo too. I like the way the 34 slot is highlited at :10 in the midst of a very steady stream of tricks. I like the ending too because it ends so abruptly it makes you think "that's cute". Overall I don't think it was particularly memorable though... -> Littleboy, but I don't care if either wins.
Taeryong vs Toryal: Taeryong's combo -- simple, short, sweet. Toryal -- less simple, less short, less sweet. -> Taeryong, but I can't really justify it other that it pleased me more.
Forever vs BaoO: I don't see anything special with forever's combo and it wasn't perfectly smooth... BaoO's combo was better with bigger tricks. -> BaoO
FFF vs Vicgotgame: Cool combo by fff but it certainly doesn't raise the standard in a WT. Vic has very good technique, style but I think for later rounds he will need to think a bit harder if he wants to be considered a true contender. -> Vicgotgame
Smile vs Areso: Smile's finish is impressive and the product of a well-thought combo but I don't think it's particularly amazing. Areso's combo is more memorable and more difficult IMO. -> Areso
ChauTran vs Pires: ChauTran's combo is decent but I think the bulk of the combo is a bit superficial... plus it's out of screen. the ending was pretty cool though. Pires' angle is not very good IMO, especially if he wants to use aerials. I think his combo has a lot more content than ChauTran's. Nevertheless, I though the middle section was too long. -> Pires, a shame because ChauTran is not at 100% because of injury. I'd be really happy if Chau can go through though, but he is vulnerable in this match.
Dercen vs Cienki: I'm not sure, I liked the elegance of Dercen's combo but this is purely feeling. -> Dercen, but I don't really care about this battle.
Voltaic vs Sfsr: I like Voltaic's combo alot... nice busts and love the through pass on the pinky. Can't say Sfsr's video was particularly outstanding, it flows well, but it doesn't amount to much... -> Voltaic
TWIM vs Hamster: TWIM's combo is pretty good, one thing I don't like the various changes of speed. I think speed change can be good if used well but they seem to come at awkward moments in his video... in other words the speed transitions are lacking. What I really like though, was the intention behind the speed change: starting off fast, slowing way down then picking up the pace again for a strong finish. Hamster's video contains several mistakes especially the one at the very end, but it has some interesting linkages, not all being obvious. -> TWIM, but I would only consider it a minor upset if Hamster wins.
Crew vs $weety: Crew made a really good, sound combo with nice tricks like the arounds in the middle. Lots of big rotations, nice effect. $weety's combo was really good until the failed ending, which is simply not going to cut it against a strong opponent like Crew (aka Dark). -> Crew
Answer vs TurnDon't: Answer's combo is my favourite this round. Crazy tricks, and the ending is spectacular. TurnDon't makes an alright combo with a bad camera and stands no chance. -> Answer, unequivocally.
Miyusu vs Caras: Tough battle. Miyusu's combo is certainly unique, but I can't say I'm a big fan of it. I prefer Caras' solid combo. -> Caras, but I might change my mind later if I understand Miyusu's combo.
Hamor vs MinI: Very impressed with Hamor, who delivers a smooth, stylish, great looking combo. MinI's combo looks so ugly in comparison. -> Hamor, easily.
gollumsk8 vs Celen: gollumsk8's combo is very sophisticated and the execution is pretty good. Celen's combo was very good but I think in this battle you need to give advantage to gollumsk8 for his difficulty and variety over any advantage Celen might have execution and style-wise. -> Gollumsk8, but Celen could win if judges don't feel favourably towards gollumsk8's ideas.
Dulek vs Tonnam: Dulek's combo contain too many mistakes... Tonnam only has a small one. -> Tonnam
wcy vs Charlie: wcy's combo is intense and looks great. However, Charlie's combo has very difficult tricks too and looks great too save for the very last catch... -> undecided, this is 50/50 for me.

wow i actually read all the analysis...
very detailed analysis indeed...QUOTEThe wrench as a prop in the background become a symbolic element and an integral, albeit passive, part of the combo itself.
this sentence made me
so i guess efficiency is something like that? lol
and about the cam quality... i think something went wrong posting them on youtube
the original files look fine but linking them to kpsa will be tricky it'd be better if alex just sends them out to the judges -
Date: Mon, Jan 26 2009 06:07:59QUOTE (Zombo @ Jan 25 2009, 09:36 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>S777 vs 12ve: Close battle.
I disagree.. the armaround looks rather difficult but is actually quite simple IMO. The only thing that I thought was especially difficult about S777's combo was his ending. Although I suppose you could say that same about 12ve, that the only difficulty he had were his 1p2h tricks. Still, I prefer 12ve's combo over S777.
Other than that I thought you did a wonderful job analyzing the combos -
Date: Mon, Jan 26 2009 06:17:24
hmm yea...
still the sequence that leads to the push to the (fore)armaround is not very easy to do smoothly and be able to link it up together. -
Date: Mon, Jan 26 2009 06:38:40
I agree with you for the most part, zombo. But I don't think Pires will win against Chautran. Pires's has a couple of nice tricks, but his style/hand movement needs work and his pen is rather large, decreasing the difficulty of his combo. And I rather preferred Cienki over Dercen.
Also, I believe vic was going easy on fff. But I rather liked vic's combo.
And alright, 50/50 chance? Better than I hoped. :] and I knew I should have refilmed, but I lost any motivation. I hate filming at home. -

- Knuckles broke his shoulder because of a Tae Kwon Do battle, and he didn't want to send an old combo
- oh, and Spini stop penspinning for personal reasons. =/ hope we ll see him again =(
i could't watch more than the half ofthe combos, because of my bad internetconnection, but i ve seen very nice things
peem's final wtf oO
s777 12ve nice battle but i dont like s777 style
taeryong toryal => toryal is my fav spinner i hop he ll win =/
nice mod of dongza ^^
answer is so nice...
good luck to everyone and good luck romang! -

in addition to the THPSC 4/4, watch out for TWPS, I think they can go 3/3, very impressive also.

Hrm I have to say Zombo but I think you're wrong in Stuhl vs. Rex. Compared to Stuhl's combo Rex's combo was merely a simple hybrid Japanese/Korean style combo. Sure it was fast and smooth, but Stuhl completely blew him out of the water using all his surroundings, just the fact that he used aerials, his other hand, and the table increases the difficulty of his combo, and then when you add the smoothness and execution of Stuhl, that's one hell of a combo.

upon further review:
rex does hit the pen to make it reverse direction. The pen was already being released in a reverse around so this push was the only way to make it change direction. Although, the difference is very subtle between this and simply not releasing the pen in 23 and changing direction.
another thing: his pen hits the side of his computer at the end LOL -

Not that it's directed at me but Stuhl used the same concept . -

the way stuhl did it is quit different; he actually held the pen in the L1R1 slot and then repushed, whereas Rex uses a tap and no holding.

because first round has many videos, so judges will get 2 weeks for first round
after that its one week or less. -

more than 3 weeks now...

the problem is not crash to put results online
the problem is one judge still not finished yet. -

haha
i think judges nowadays should be more responsible time-wise... -
Date: Sun, Feb 8 2009 01:57:52
i agree, i mean this is World Tournament, the most official competation in pen spinning, they need to take it more seriously.
Asian Cup these is the excuse of first time organizing, this time....lah... -
Date: Sun, Feb 8 2009 13:48:27
Well I guess there will be no more problems for next rounds cause less and less spinners will be up. Let's just hope that last judges will give their judgement quickly cause we can't afford to be that late.
-
Date: Sun, Feb 8 2009 14:03:31
we should fire this judge, pass his judgement

Date: Sun, Feb 8 2009 14:28:31QUOTE (CNstar @ Feb 8 2009, 03:03 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>we should fire this judge,pass his judgement
Not that easy. By firing a judge, you fire the chance for several spinners to be qualified. And I guess the number of judges is an odd number. I you fire one judge, you'll get several ties. -
Date: Sun, Feb 8 2009 14:36:48
crash should prepare some jadge Replacement to face this problem
-
Date: Sun, Feb 8 2009 14:43:17

Please, no rush on him when he'll be online. -
Date: Sun, Feb 8 2009 14:53:34
IMO,i can't believe somebody took half a month to Judge the 64 clips .
unless they wrote every clips breakdown.
but i think nobody would do that.
they need to take it more seriously. -
Date: Sun, Feb 8 2009 14:59:36
you've waited 2 weeks, a few days more wont hurt

I agree with you that this is not serious because this is an important event.
But hey, this guy has a life. Maybe did he plan to judge few days before deadline, but had to do something else, who knows ?
Just relax, and wait for the results wich should be online today. -

hey, some people won't be able to go on internet after this weekend, maybe that's why they are rushing
Chinese Winter holiday ends tomorrow -
Date: Sun, Feb 8 2009 15:36:55
judging 64 clips can take a while
maybe 2 hours and you have to be very concentrated
towards the end it gets very boring
its better to split into small groups
maybe 4 battles per day
in 8 days you are finished -
Date: Sun, Feb 8 2009 16:20:13
Zombo- it took me 2 hours to judge it without realy getting into the clips.
So think how long it takes for the real judges to judge the videos... -

The judges are the only responsible for the results so what we must want them to do is to judge very accurate no matter how much time it is taking. Everyone wants the results but it would suck a lot more if they are not correct. -
