Book of the Month (BotM) is a game designed to promote literacy and allow avid readers to challenge themselves. Additionally, it improves one's aptitude in writing book reviews and analyzing novels, both of which are indispensable skills in English class. If there is enough participation, this is how the game will run:

    Format

"Book of the Month" is a bit of a misnomer. In actuality, a novel will be selected during one month and read the following month. If the game were to begin, February would be spent selecting a novel, which would be read in March.

Selection Month (February, April, June, etc.)

    1. During the first two weeks of the selection month, members submit book suggestions for the reading month. Suggestions are optional and are limited to 3 novels maximum per person. When you suggest a novel, please add a synopsis or link to one online. Recommendations must satisfy the following criteria:

    - The novel should be one which you have not read.
    - The novel should be a stand-alone book (i.e. not part of a larger trilogy, series, or set).
    - The novel should be written at a young adult or adult level.
    - The novel should be popular enough to be fairly obtainable around the world (don't choose something too obscure or out of print). Classics are good suggestions.
    - The novel should have garnered generally favourable reviews on the Internet, on such sites as Amazon.com.
    - The novel should have an English version (although you can choose to read a non-English translation if you wish).
    - The novel should be of reasonable length (don't suggest "War and Peace" or other tomes).

    2. During the third week of the selection month, the book suggestions are collected and voted upon. The poll is open for 1 week.

    3. During the last week (and few extra days) of the selection month, the top voted-upon novel is listed.

Reading Month (March, May, July, etc.)

    1. The novel that received the most votes in the selection month is considered the "book of the month" and those playing the game are expected to read it. If for some reason you can't obtain a copy or have already read the book, you can either re-read it or choose to read the book with the second most votes instead.

    2. A thread will be opened for discussion at the beginning of the same month and will stay open thereafter. You can post your progress or other comments in the same thread, but please refrain from posting plot elements and so on until about the third week (the 21st) of the month if you finish early. Even then, I'll include a spoiler warning in the first post of the thread, so you won't have to include a spoiler warning every time you post.

Post in this thread if you are interested in playing or have game suggestions/questions.

I'd like to conclude by stressing the fact that this game is a TRIAL. If there is not enough participation then there won't be a game; it's as simple as that. I figure at least 5 members, including myself, are needed for there to be good book discussions.
