Performers usually have a certain attire when performing in front of people. When we think of magicians, we think of tuxedos, though nowadays they wear anything slick. When I think of XCM performers, I think of guys wearing a dress shirt. Now, when I think of pen spinner, I draw a blank. Usually, it's mostly guys with t-shirts and jeans, but I think if we put a little more thought into the clothing, we could achieve a certain effect. What that effect may be, I don't know.
I recently started wearing sweaters because it's getting cold and I found out that having a long sleeve come up to the hand, slightly covering the bottom of the palm gives a really nice look when spinning, especially when filming. I try to avoid striped sweaters and go for the darker solid colors like brown or black. I think this ties back to the "floating hand illusion".
I also noticed that some Japanese and Korean spinners wear dress shirts while spinning and in retrospect, it looks very nice and professional.
I'm not saying that a certain attire should be the standard; instead I just want to give the impression that classy guys can spin, too. Even James Bond. -

cloud traveler wears dress shirts
But I like aki-maru's "big sweater" look -

Kam wears dress shirts and he looks very proffesional. I think you are right about long sleeves giving the spinner a nicer look, not to mention it helps on cold days. Wearing something like a graphic tee kinda takes the seriousness out of pen spinning.

When i think about penspinning attire i am reminded of all the videos i see of people spinning half naked in their boxers lol

Too bad there aren't any female spinners willing to do that. :] -
Date: Thu, Oct 25 2007 03:12:46
so wearing sweaters.. gives the same feeling of being proffesional as if you were spinning an unmodded pen?
i mean, thats how i think of it. -
Date: Thu, Oct 25 2007 08:25:55
i think the plain t-shirt and jeans look is cool. its casual and fits with when and where we PS. school, home, places. and usually we dont show oof our PSing skill to other people. I like freestyling, i dont wanna wear a sweater anyways ;p i like shirts
-

I hope Swisspinner checks this thread, that way he might wear pants next time he spins.
I was thinking of this though, and I agree with the long sleeves, I always thought that it was so cool when Bonkura was spinning with a long sleeve t-shirt and his ballsign, I dunno why but it made the video look really cool. I think it's because it's so different to what penspinners usually use, and it's professional. -
Date: Thu, Oct 25 2007 10:02:43
yea.. long sleeve makes you look professional..but doesn't it get in the way of spinning? i just can't spin with my sleeve down..it gets in the way too much..
-

i agree
id say maybe a hoodie with a zip down the middle with the sleeve with yr spinning hand rolled up and the other left down looks kinda cool
i usually wouldnt wear the hood up - if u did some people might think u look like a scobe or something lol -

Black Long Sleeved Shirt, black background and light on hand
makes everything awesome -
Date: Fri, Oct 26 2007 01:22:21
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned how shirts that are flashy or have text/logos on the front can distract the viewer from the spinning. It is not only a comfort issue.
-

For some unknown reason, i like wearing my school formal attire being : long sleeve white shirt, school blazer, school tie... the works
-

That depends on the angle though, like with bonkura's angle you can only see the hand and sleeve on the plain background. -

I don't think that the Japanese students were wearing dress jacket/shirts, I think they were wearing their school uniforms(Which look somewhat like dress jacket/shirt, although slightly different.).
-
Date: Fri, Oct 26 2007 14:42:18
Right now I'm thinking, wear whatever you want, as long is it aint your underwear! If the male/female ratio of pen spinners reverses, so does my opinion on this!
-
Date: Fri, Oct 26 2007 16:01:37
I don't find there is a penspinning attire except from the bracelets, those anti-sweat things (brassard in french ^^), sleaves, etc... I honestly don't really mind, I like wearing something when I spin but sometimes I don't. Sweaters and long-sleaved shirts wouldn't make a difference because I'm usually quite hot and I always roll put my sleaves, even my jackets sleaves sometimes (if it's not a heavy jacket), so there but I have spun with sleaves and it does look good, but every spinner should have whatever they want, it would suck if all of a sudden everybody starts with sleaves... be creative and personalise yourself ^^

do wristband actually help??? or do they just look good or do they get in the way??

Just like how racing stripes on a car automatically add 50hp, a wristband will increase your penspinning ability by 10 fold. True story. -

Dude, you obviously haven't heard of painting the tires or the entire car red, that is like adding 10 bottles of nos. -

depends on the video really.
if its like whole body, I just think a baseball t-shirt style is fine.
as for hand presentation, I always wear a Wristband, everywhere, not just for videos or somethin, It's become more like Habit...
But Wristbands really do help me in spinning, keeps my wrist stationary and trains the hand for keeping straight/still. -

i personally like using sweaters or a wristband because you like mostly see the wrist soo..... yeahhh

any1 kno a good place to get custom made sweat wristbands, that i dont have to pay for like 100. Or a place for a custom t-shirt. Planning on putting UCPSB logo and my name on the back maybe names of pens i spin with or tricks i can do. for the wrist band i would put UCPSB logo one side other my UCPSB name(Aries)my real name...

I don't care how cool or good Eriror is...I do not like wristbands
I mean...I can see why Tennis players wear them...if you sweat too much and it starts dripping to your hand, you'll lose a good grip on your racket. But in PS, what's the point? The way I see it...the only reason you would be wearing a wristband is to look cool. And if you're trying to look cool, you automatically lose points in my book
It's like making a joke...if you tell it and start laughing at it yourself, the joke is already no longer funny.
In my view, keeping things simple usually works best. The more you try to add to your attire to look cool, the higher the chances of you messing it up. Think of it like this...in design, it's much easier to get a match when you have two colors (black & white, blue & red, etc.). But once you start trying to use 5 different colors in the same design, chances are it won't look good.
I think the same holds true for clothing. Keep it simple...a solid color or two works and doesn't detract from your PS. But if you want to make a statement, then go for neon Pink? -
Date: Thu, Jan 3 2008 11:06:01
I like wearing sweater and spin but i can't always wear it, the weather is warm in my place. Unless there is heavy rain or when im going to be in the lecture hall during rain.

I got a leather jacket from a relative as a gift.
It has two pockets on the front that are like 21cm tall and like 8cm wide (I am guessing here)
anyway, they are great for my pens in one pocket and cards in the other. (I know 1 handed cut and can do a fan, )
the jacket also looks very nice so I where it to school with like a polo shirt underneth. It works with our schools anoying dress code.
If I ever get good enough I will be wearing it in my vids. -

I think to have style on the clothes will make the people more interested in penspinning when you showing it for peoples.

@Kam
As much as I respect you, I disagree. If you're spinning a KT or something with a sharp tip or end wearing a wristband can protect you. People like me, who shiver just by looking at your veins, should wear a wristband. Enough said -
Date: Wed, Jan 16 2008 15:01:29
I only hurt my fingers last time while I was spinning a regular pen.
I didn't get any injuries while spinning a mod so far, so, still don't get it when you say protecting you from getting hurt. Unless you only spin regular pens. -

well sometimes when i spin a kt and i hold it at a bad angle, it sorta hits into the back of my hand or the underside of my wrist
and that could hurt a bit if i was spinning fast enough since it's so sharp -

Long sleeves ftw!

for me, clothing doesn't really matter
im too busy watching the penspinning to look at the clothing
but i have to admit that i hate it when people wear bracelets or wristbands -

But the one Eso is wearing seems cool to me...
-
Date: Thu, Apr 10 2008 01:30:54
Personally, I like to roll up my sleeves (more convenient) and where sumthin that doesn't attract all the attention to da clothing. I mean, it's about penspinning right? Not who's clothing looks the coolest.

I like wearing long sleeve shirts, or jackets ...but lately, I've just spinning with w/e. -

With whatever I'm wearing. I did it with my PJs once.
-

I belive that clothing is good to wear while spining but beyond that I think anything is ok as long as it will not distract video viewers
-

I was thinking about this before, but more fashion stylish. I mean, you can judge a person to be a skater by his clothes (even if he wouldn't skate, you can still see what clothes are typical for a skater), or something else. Would it be possible to judge someone to be a penspinner based on what they wear?
What I see as typical penspinner clothes is a sort of Asia-inspired hip-hop style. Kind of tight clothes and a New Era cap. I don't know why, I mean I haven't ever seen a penspinner walk around in that but it gives me the feeling of "penspinner". Would be cool if you one day could see who spins pens just based on this. -

I don't do it for visual effects, but I just don't like spinning with sleeves. Never have. D:

har har har -

I dont like spinning with long sleeves cuz my pen always seems to get stuck on the sleeve and mess up my combo so in videos i just show my hand and part of my fore arm.

I like wearing longsleeve shirts
or a t-shirt + wristband. -
Date: Thu, Aug 14 2008 16:54:55
I wear what i have on at the time. I don't think its worth the trouble to change clothing just to spin unless its for an important video or something. Just solid colour shirts would work for me as long as it isn't too flashy. I can't stand spinning with long sleeve shirts either . I think that the floating hand illusion is really cool though and it allows you to concentrate on the hand more.
-

Well some spinners spin over their legs instead over a table
Take Dongza or Frip for example, they don't usually spin over a desk when their recording
So if you have like no pants on then that could be a problem -

Well, I like basically 2 styles :
wearing dress shirts like some Japanese people do sometimes (Like SEVEN, here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfZGfZrWJoE )
or, just wearing casual stuff, some nice shirt or something... and long sleeve are also cool I believe.. I shall check that when winter comes -

I really don't get the point of paying attention to what you're wearing when you film...It's not like you're going to lose a battle or get cut from a collab just because of the shirt you're wearing...
-

someone made a comment against eriror's red shirt during eriror's battle vs scott shaputis... and apparantly that affected his decision on who he voted for =\
so as ridiculous as it may seem (and i dont' think that clothing should affect who someone votes for in a battle), there are some people who may think differently and feel that a video should have the pen, clothing, and background all matching one another -

Hm. Just noticed that.
But some spinners wore short sleeve shirts, and others didn't even have their wrists in view.
So I dunno, a whole collab with the same dress code is a neat idea,
but it loses individuality when it comes to the spinners. -
