Presentation / How would you advertise a Pen Spinning club?

Deft Spinners, a club I intend to make soon at my college.

    Hey y'all,

Cursed Reverse here asking you how you would go about advertising for a pen spinning club. This is taking place in a college setting at the University level so I'm fairly certain that there should be a good number of people that will be genuinely interested in the idea (out of the 12k students that go here I'd estimate that about .5-1% of them can perform a fundamental and that about 20-40% of those people will be interested in further extending their skills. So I'm expecting at least about 12 people that would stick with a pen spinning club.)

The reason I put this under Presentation as opposed to the general board is because really what I'm asking here is how I should go about presenting the club say on a flyer/poster. I've already thought up the name for the club, Deft Spinners. I was caught between that and the pen15 club (lol) but decided the former was perhaps the cooler looking and just more mature in general i s'poze.

Anyway the trick I think here in advertising for pen spinning would be to maybe perhaps include a snapshot of a pen spinning away in action on the actual poster as well as some kind of catchy phrase that will pique kids interests. I'm looking for like a cool one liner that will show the deepness of pen spinning but at the same time kind of put it in a nice and interesting light. Do you get what I mean?

Sorry if I'm a little vague but I think overall the question I'm posing should be pretty coherent by now.. Thanks in advance to all the honest replies and no thanks to all the silly replies.

Pen spinning - What cool people do

Seriously though, the absolute key to posters is to keep them SIMPLE. Simple simple simple. 3 things on the poster - title, picture, info.

    Something like

    Deft Spinners pen spinning club

    Meets @

    Arno:
Thanks for the idea. I'll consider playing around with the intended name for the club when I go about creating my poster.

    Zombo:

Usually I'd be annoyed with a one-liner response to a question I deem important however I appreciate the effort you put forth in taking a solid 20-40seconds to go and find a link to post here the definition of deft.

    Mats:
Obviously yours was the most helpful response thusfar. I had simple in mind before this however I wasn't neccessarily sure how many things simple should include. Perhaps a follow up thought you might be willing to provide something more on is where I can find a so called 'AWESOME PICTURE' because atm all I have in mind is checking google images.

--Thanks all, keep the responses coming, espescially the good, informative ones biggrin.gif

Unless you were offering free pizza and drinks, I doubt a lot people will attend the first meeting based on curiosity alone. I would suggest sending out advertisements around campus (make sure they're approved, of course) and make the wording enticing. I wouldn't use a graphic because they waste ink. Instead, I would use a bold, catchy font with some kind of catch phrase that will invoke curiosity and interest.

Your numbers seem optimistic, but how can you be so sure that 20-40% are interested in furthering their skills?

I would suggest you try being a decent spinner first before attempting something like this. People generally want to flock to someone who knows what he/she's talking about, ya know? Do your homework and try not to mislead people.

That's about all the advice I can give. Hope it helps.

Make sure the people that are interested can contact you somehow, I don't know if you want your cell-phone number published all over the school, but you email perhaps?

Other then that, I don't know. Keep it simple, yet outstanding. Some special colors perhaps? "Retro" colors would be really cool imo, pastell and neon?

Eso has some good advice also!

As for the pic, I would suggest something like these:

Simply found on Google images, they show pen spinning about as well as you can in a photograph. They make it look interesting, the 'still' shots look wack. I'm sure you can think of a good last line with tricks like Sonic and Shadow about. smile.gif

    Eso:
Absolutely great advice. You make a very good point with refreshment provisions. When I do make my poster I'll be sure to include something like, 'Pizza, Drinks, & Pens provided' or something like that. I will certainly make sure to use a phat font as well however I will also include a picture because I feel a picture really can be worth 1000 words, you know?

You bring up another really good point concerning where I'm at in pen spinning and what really will I have to bring to the table (ha literally) to a few people curious about pen spinning themselves. I feel pretty confident with my skills the only places I seem to be lacking are linking together different moves together to form combos as well as being able to form more than 3-4 different combos consistently. There are also two fundamental tricks I'm still working on, those being the reverse charge (uhgh) as well as TA rev (I taught myself this one differently than how it should go so I'm trying to convert how I do that). On the flipside there are also a few tricks im starting to get down pretty well such as BA and BA rev and ext TA and I've been getting pretty good at these 'sweeps' (just last night i finally made the link from 23-34-34-23 smooth). I'm also getting pretty good at the normal shadow and atm I'm working on variations of the shadow as well as this falling BAs or something.
--My question to you is what is enough to establish someone as an experienced pen spinner? Just being able to do a lot of different moves, being able to link a lot of different moves, or simply being able to at least explain all the fundamentals as well as being able to do a lot of different moves?

    Sfsr:
An excellent point on protecting my privacy. I do not own a cell phone and I don't really have too much issue with releasing one of my two college addresses out to the public so this shouldn't be too much of a hassle. Of course I won't put something like my full name, where I live, my hobbies or something like that (although I'd probably go over some of this at an initial meeting of the club.)

Design-wise I'll keep 'retro' and 'contrast' in mind when I eventually get around to creating my poster. Thanks for the advice though!

    Mats:
Indeed, Eso does have good advice! I too found a few interesting pictures on google images however I feel while some of them -do- look cool they don't necc. capture what I'm looking for. I feel that in order to get the kind of picture I'm looking for I'll either have to search harder (maybe on websites that sell PS pens?), make one myself, or ask someone else in the PS community to make one. and yeah, I'm still deciding whether or not to reference any moves in particular in the poster (shadow/sonic) as cool as they may sound!

    aJa:
An awesome picture! The only dislike I can find off the bat is the apple reference. I don't think I'm going to include something that so obviously references some other kind of outside company (IE apple) however the picture is definitely interesting.

That's a thumb around right? definitely a nice portrayal of pen spinning IMO. Really the picture I'm going to end up using I'm going to try and maximize the amount of hand that you can see, like, something where most of the hand is clearly visible as opposed to a picture where the hand might be something like closed up or harder to discern what's doing what. I like the positions of the TA however that is the left hand correct? I think in the final picture I'm going to use a right hand (although theoretically I guess any picture showing a left handed trick could easily by changed to a right handed trick by simply flipping the picture xD)

Keep up the awesome responses everyone! I think I'm going to go on to make a separate thread devoted purely to the community developing some kind of interesting 'catch-phrase' as I'm betting this is a topic that will be sure to generate some interesting creations!

I would definetely be in a club like this if it was for real. As for advice I am not sure. Sorry Eso even though you're my favorite spinner heh im gonna have to disagree with yah. I do think you should put a picture up. That will give the people an idea of what of what they can learn and how cool it really is laugh.gif A great idea though. You should definetely come through with this club. It would be great.
