I know almost everyone does a peace sign or a thumbs up or some sort of hand gesture after every combo or after a hard combo. To me this looks sort of childish, and makes pen-spinning seem like more of a little kid thing. I don't know.
Hand gestures to me are just immature?

There cool but eh almost everyone does a peace sign when they are done so I see what your point is. It is sort of old but I still think it's fine.

well it does reinforce the stereotype that only asians spin, since asians like to do the peace sign a lot...
but then, rappers make a lot of hand gestures too, and nobody seem to care?? -

Well it's kinda like, we do cool shit with our hands, and then we are saying, thankyou or peace with our hands. Not really childish, but some more hand gestures could be used, like how bonkura would always put up the round number with his fingers.

i think there is nothing ammature about hand gesture. but the peace sign is overused..people should make up their own hand sign and use that at the end of the combo.. -

I really think we're asking the wrong people how it looks. We're probably influenced greatly because of how great spinners do their combos, and we try to replicate something they did as well....
You should ask one of your friends that don't spin, and take their opinion on it.
One of my friends, says she thinks when I do the thumbs up thing that it's cute
But one of my other friends says it kills my clip. So yeah... ask people that DON'T spin, since you're trying to impress everybody, right? lol -

But it would be EXTREMELY cool to see a really fast finger wave (at the speed that Greg Irwin can do it) at the end of the combo. It would take a lot of practice though.*Tim goes to start practicing his Xtreme Digits.
Oh wait, I can practice it here.
EDIT: Video of the finger wave by Greg Irwin. The video is 3 mins long but the finger wave is in the first 30 seconds.
EDIT AGAIN: Romain's finger dancing was really really awesome in his solo and I haven't seen it before. That's was really nice but would lose a lot if everyone used it. -

Hmmm in ThaiSpinner we do a "wai" at the end of combos to represent our country/culture and stuff. You'll see it in a real official collab or TST vids.
It's the way we give greeting, respect, apologies, etc. Look at Dongza's avatar.

if someone ever copies you, at least people know that you had started it cause you'll have the date which the video was posted on and you can use that as proof
as for hand gestures, i don't think i really find them childish but i wouldnt' use them myself either
at the end of a combo, i'd probably either have teh pen rest in 12 or pull out a sign and have a message on it xD -

i think that he's just worried that if he says what his hand gesture is before posting a video of it, somebody else will use that hand gesture after reading his post of it, and then it'll look like the other person did it first, even if he had posted it first

well i think it looks really cool for some reason when like...like when bonkura did an isonic fa and thing in his 1st solo....he like waved his arm and turned it(to show how "magical" his isonic was) and then did a thumbs up

We don't see enough offensive hand gestures in battle videos... I mean, if you lay down a combo you know is gonna rape the guy, put an offensive hand gesture at the end.

why does it suck? do you mean the frequency of its use? by the way, i can at least say that hand gestures are used much more often in japan. the context in which we use gestures may be much different from how other cultures use gestures. also, when we use it, and how much we use it may differ as well. btw, Pen Ninja is on to something... gonna work on my finger manipulations now...

I've alway seen the V sign not much as a "peace" gesture, but an expression of victory ( I thin the V comes from there).
So, if someone is very happy to have filmed something hard, for him, why not exclame it with a victory sign.

I hate hand gestures. Back when it was just a quick thumbs up I didn't really care, but now it's ridiculous. People are like little kids with cameras, throwing up a bunch of stupid signs. I lol'd at Icepray's pelvic thrusts though.

I'm surprised that more people don't agree with me, but I think that hand gestures, without exception, look dumb. It probably has something to do with the fact that I started spinning in a day when nobody used gestures. But now they're getting out of control. It makes it look like all pen-spinners are wannabe gangsters who can't come up with anything else original, so they have to flash a sign instead.
Some people said they use signs because they're excited that they finished a combo. ??? Well why don't you squeal like a little girl when you finish a combo? It would bring about the same emotional release, and any non-spinner on youtube would probably have about the same opinion about squealing as they will about hand gestures.
Or you could just try to contain your emotions. I'm sure you don't give yourself a high-five after every homework problem you finish. So just grow up, hold back your giddiness, and stop embarassing the pen spinning community. -

It's only lame if it's overused. Or if it's just...obviously lame.
I used to just ignore them when they did a combo ending on like say the thumbflap that they followed with a peace sign. That was ok. But sometimes they throw the pen down and go do this ghey flick thing with their hand..you know where they flick it forward, throw out a sign, and bring it back slowly.
I never really commented about it, but I was watching PSing vids with a friend and he was like ZOMGWTF this guy is so lame! I thought he had a cool combo but then he was like WATCH-A look at my index and middle finger in the shape of a V! LOLZWHATANUB -

To me handgestures are no problem at least when they are done once in a while and not exaggerated, like 2 sec hand gestures or those with “omg, I can move my hand like a wave and over my whole desk, I haz skillzz“-movement.
If there is a thumbup or a peace sign in one out of ten clips it doesn't matter, imo. Well, maybe it would be more serious without hand gestures but I also can live with it. -
