well, I'm actually not sure 100% sure if i want to do it, but I probably will
today in my public speaking class our teacher announced our next speech, which this time will be a demonstration of our abilities, it can range from cooking to well whatever you can do lol
so than I thought of doing a pen spinning demonstration, i know it'd be something totally different and a great oppertunity to do so,
I explained it to my teacher and she said that if I can turn it into a 10 minute demonstration speech than I should go for it, she said to include its origins etc.
so i'm pretty excited about it and would like you for you to give me some ideas for something to come up with everyone would like to see -

- Talk about origin of penspinning (UPSB Wiki)
-When and where
-and maybe that it's to help kids through the boredom of class o.o... but then again, maybe not xD - Mod a MX
-you may wanna bring just a rsvp + hgg, explain the process, and then show them the final product - Explain the fundamentals and do a quick tutorial for 1-2 of them
-Thumbaround and fingerpass is usually the easiest to explain imo -.-'' - Do a combo
-end with a flashy aerial if possible and then bow, and say "Thank you" =P

What JC said.
maybe also explain some popular mods (and why people mod their pens in the first place.)
And about how there are different online communities (PDS, JEB, GPC, FPSB etc.) -
Date: Thu, Feb 19 2009 20:51:56
mhmm, yeah, talk about the different online communitites too, that's a good idea ^^
make mention of those, and how people trade with one another around the world (dunno if you do or not..)
-that usually is pretty interesting for people to hear because to interact with people internationally is generally a cool thing =]
Perhaps make mention of
-Live tournaments (JEB, GPC, PPP, Bic tournament, etc...)
-Online tournaments
Naming/Research Committee
-jsut throw in a bit about how there are different sections of UPSB, and the other boards, and how some of them are dedicated towards certain aspects of penspinning such as nomenclature
then you could maybe put a breakdown on the board:
K4LC > charge t1 > pass rev t1-12 > sonic rev 12-13 ~> pass 13-34-23 > tw. sonic 23-12 > TA ~> IA 0.5
Make it as confusing as possible >:] to show the complexity of what you do (^and then do the combo you write down maybe...?)
If you can, write in formal notation with the whole [s][c] stuff... which i dont' know how to write it... =P -

Also talk about the world tournament and cup and all the countries in them, so they can see how diverse and organized it has gotten.
That seems to surprise people. -

i think one of the best things to do is try to get your audience into it
let them see your pens, and try teaching them a trick or 2 -

Strange..I did a speech on the same thing when it came to the option of cooking -> demonstrate something o_O in my Oral Communications class...Feedback: Don't spin so much because people will be more mesmerized with your fingers than your actual speech..but then again, people might just wanna see the spinning lol. Have fun with it, man

Would the teacher allow you at some point during the middle-end of your presentation, to ask everyone to pick up a pen? If so, then show them a ThumbAround Normal and explain how to do it. You could have a significant proportion of a class able to do one trick then (and a teacher who is very annoyed). Your call.
Apart from that, have a few solid combos down (ones that you can hit close to 100%). You don't want to be dropping everywhere like a fool when it comes to demonstration time.
I think good topics would be:
The world tournament
Pen modding
UPSB
Each topic you talk about should be seperated by something. Demonstrations and/or teaching? -

I did a pen spinning show and tell a month ago. I gave the class a brief explanation of the thumbaround and also about other online communities. Talk about why you like it.

My suggestion is to show them some long combos to get their attention then talk about other pen spinners like kam. Hope i can help.

If I were you, I'd make a pen infront of them from scratch, and explain everything in detail infront of them. I think it could be hard to speak about everything about PSing for 10 minutes straight.

Talk about how it started "at schools" how evolutionatize? people like kam that use them in a combo or creating more tricks!!! etc.
JC got all my ideas!! -

yes yes yes love the ideas, soon(like tomorrow i hope) i will post a rough look at what i could say
one question, i know they're on the wiki, but can someone give me the best way of teaching thumbaround and sonic? so they can actually understnad it sort a quicker -

ok guys do to the "unknowingness" of my public speaking teacher, i was uanble to do the pen spinning demonstation but we doing choice speeches now and now im allowed to do it but it has to be 5 minutes and under. So i wanna teach some basic stuff, so any last minute ideas lol(im doin it tomorroW)
i thinking maybe giving a brief backgrouund and teaching the thumbaround -

Pull stuff from the wiki, do a tutorial on the charge. (easier to learn than the thumbaround)
Give a demonstration (K4LC etc.). Something that you can perform without dropping, but as flashy as possible. Palm turns, aerials, big spins, etc. Show off your pens, 2p2h or 1p2h? -

agreed, taught everyone in my grade how to do charge within a week. everyone. Tell them how to do it in class, then they'll keep trying it on their own. -

u sure? i always thought teh TA was easier to learn and charge was hardest for people -

Some people find Charge to be very easy to learn, some think it's hard. Also, Charge can be harder to teach than Thumbaround. I think you should just stick with TA because very few people find it difficult to learn. -
Date: Wed, Jun 3 2009 22:35:58
/disagree
Charge may/may not be easier to learn, and I doubt the TA part. Easy to learn, hard to master. No point in teaching something where everyone drops and pisses off the teacher. -

make a writable mod. most of the people i know that dont spin are like "this is stupid, why cant you even write with this?" rsvp mx is definitely a good mod for you to make in front of them.
