Stay positive, you can always use your other hand while waiting for your thumb to heal. -
Date: Wed, Oct 31 2007 09:50:04
Ouch! What happened? That looks pretty bad.
It's great know that you're still participating in the pen spinning community, albeit with less frequency. Haven't seen you in quite a while. -
Date: Wed, Oct 31 2007 10:24:04
Nice to know that you're from Singaproe yxtay
It explains what happened on his website. He fell off his bike and hurt his thumb on the day (or near the day, I can't remember ) that he was going to meet NHK and Kam. He didn't think it was that bad but it got infected and it got really bad. Had to call Kam and NHK to cancel, went to hospital. -

yeah of course do they, I once had my thumb shut between a door and a door frame. I had to go to the hospital and they totally removed my nail, it grew back after 2,5 months
edit: oh really sorry to hear about your thumb, hope you'll be able to use it as soon as possible -
Date: Wed, Oct 31 2007 14:05:57
so what! You still have your left hand, you can still spin!
-

Goddamn! I really hope your thumb heal fast and nice.
Be careful next time with your hands, it's the most important you have!

Thats why I had to stay in the hospital for 5 days, they had to get the infection out of the broken bone, if they wouldn't have, I would have lost the top half of my thumb. Pretty scary. So now it is a matter of how much soft tissue grows back, all of the black tissue is dead and the nail bed that the nail is supposed to grow from is dead, but the doctor said today that it may still come back. If not they'll have to do some skin graphs from my big toe. The first BigToeAroound?....I hope not. The bone is broken bad with several fracture lines into the joint so I can't really move it yet, I really hope I get my ability to hing my thumb back beyond straight, I use that genetic feature for several tricks. -

ahaha good one
so is it getting any better? i wonder what new tricks were your working on -
Date: Mon, Nov 5 2007 13:56:50
Meanwhile, you can develop on new tricks which don't utilise the thumb. Just kidding. It'd be ridiculous to be spinning with an badly injured hand. Rest well.
-
Date: Sat, Nov 10 2007 23:22:18
Recovery not going as well as I hoped, had a second surgery last night to remove more dead tissue, the infection is in the bone now.
The doctors are now saying things like, "we'll save as much as we can."
There is a chance I can beat the infection and not loss any bone, but I've been researching bone infections on the internet and its not looking too promising. I'll keep posting new info. -
Date: Sun, Nov 11 2007 12:04:04
wow...dude good luck... ....my wound is nothing to your wound/injury....I hope your thumb functions as well as before afterwards...
-
Date: Thu, Nov 15 2007 01:14:24
I'm now on at home IV antibiotics and have a wound vac machine sucking on my thumb like a leach. I'll be doing these treatments for the next 4-6 weeks. These new treatments are doing well, and the doctor thinks there is a better than 50/50 chance that the thumb can be saved, I have confidence in this new doctor, he seems to really understand the problem well and isn't afraid to take the necessary actions.
-

-
Date: Wed, Nov 21 2007 17:59:50QUOTE (ShoeMan @ Nov 21 2007, 11:46 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>any news???
Next Wednesday I should find out if the bone infection is decreasing.
Also, the doctors are saying that, best case, if all the bone is saved, I'll probably still need a nail matrix tissue graph from one of my toes so I can grow a nail and probably another surgery after that when all the tissue is healed to put a pin in because its been 5+ weeks and I still have a non-union (unhealed break). I told the doctors that I don't care how many surgeries or how long it takes, I want it as good as we can get it.
-
Date: Wed, Nov 28 2007 18:25:30
Good news, the IV antibiotics are working, the bone is healing. After a couple more weeks of IV and wound vac treatment I'll have surgery to graft nail matrix from one of my big toes so I can grow a toe nail on my thumb...
-
Date: Wed, Nov 28 2007 18:34:45
Sounds yummy :D Glad to hear you're getting good news atleast, I wouldn't stand having a hurt hand. I barely stand having just some really minor scratches on my left (spinning) hand... <_<

Glad to hear that man!
you'll be back spinning in no time! -

Still hoping to save my thumb. The bone still hasn't healed and there is still some exposed bone that the skin hasn't grown over. There is considerable atrophy and the joint doesn't work at all after being in a splint for 3 months. After/if the bone heals I can start therapy and hopefully get some motion back. I'm done with antibiotics as of yesterday when the pick line was removed from my arm. I'm now using Medihoney to protect the wound and promote skin growth. The hand surgeon doesn't think a nail matrix graft will be successful. So for now I'm hoping for the skin to grow over the bone and hoping for the bone to heal.
Spoiler:
(My thumb looking less like a thumb and more like ET's finger) -
Date: Wed, Jan 23 2008 05:37:27
I'm glad to hear that you are finally done with antibiotics and that the thumb is looking pretty good compared to the first photos we saw of it. The fact that you have exposed bone without any kind of massive bleeding is interesting, if not still really shitty. Good luck with the next steps in recovery, David.

nooo...you can't lose your thumb , you're an awesome spinner and all that'd talent would go to waste
but i just looked at the first photos that you took and it looks MUCH better than before
i'm sure it'll heal just fine it'll just take some time..hopefully not too much though -

Yea the left is getting better, but he still sucks. Not smooth and he always drops it. Lefty is going to have to step it up if he ever wants to get into a video. -

Hey David it's not hard to see the improvement. I'm sure you'll get well soon. And hey, if you got the concepts down on your right hand, your left would get it too in no time. And you know what, I don't think anyone knows the BackArounds like you do.

Hi David, really inspiring to see that you have not given up on psing given such circumstances. I always try to be cautious when doing dangerous stuff, especially handling the tools when modding. There's just too much on the line to not take any precautions. I thought having the nail off was bad enough, who knew it went all the way down to the bone. My worst nail injury happened on my big toe. Fortunately, only the nail came off. Took like 3 months for it to grow back though.
All the best, may you have a speedy recovery.

Shit, a metal press!?! How much length did you lose?
I have to go in for another surgery this Thursday Feb 14.
The bone is decaying at the break instead of healing. So the normal approach again is amputation, but the doctors are going to try to cut the dead bone out around the break and replace it with synthetic bone cement. They also plan to graft some skin from my arm over the exposed bone.
The latest x-ray shows that my thumb joint fused together while it was in a splint for the last 3 months. Artificial joints have never been used for this joint, I'll be looking for a joint solution after the reconstructed bone heals.
So, hopefully the bone cement fix works and the reconstructed thumb isn't too much smaller.
I'll give an update when I get out of the hospital. -
Date: Sun, Feb 10 2008 20:19:22
Goodluck for the operation man, I lost about 3-4mm from the tip which wasn't really all that bad, and also they repaired the nailbed well enough so that a new one has grown back.
I also had a graft from the inside of my hand...would rather have had it from my arm but oh well...
Sometimes I wish they had amputated mine (i had the option) but I've been doing exercises (like the finger independence ones ) and I can fully move it again now, just still have no feeling.
Wrecked thumb collab once more people injure themselves? haha -

I like how they always have people, in general, wear that patient scrubs even for a little thing like a thumb. You'd be much more comfortable in clothes and I'm sure if there's a problem you can sterilize the clothes or clean them first....
Anyway, Onto the main point, I read in the news a long while back and it was on digg that if you lose an entire digit or anything like that it can be regrown back because of what we're learning about cells and proteins etc. because a guy in the military lost almost a whole finger and it regrew back. Also, you have your other hand too for now.
Good luck with recovery though. All the pioneers seem to have bad luck... Kam lost his wallet?

We just finished .UPSB podcast 6.
I should have tested my mic, it sounds like I have a lisp through the whole interview.
Had a third surgery on my thumb February 14th. They had to take some of the bone out that was not healing and the joint fused together after the cartilage was destroyed by the infection.
