Pen Modifications / Noise Reduction

Has anyone thought of making a mod that will be quieter when you drop it? This way spinning could be practiced for example, in a classroom, without distracting and/or annoying others as much.

I worked on this for awhile, but the trouble is, in order to dampen the sound you need to dampen the amount of contact it makes with set object.

In order silence an RSVP you would have to wrap layer of tissue or thick paper around the barrel which then makes the spinning suck.

All hard-plastic mods using RSVP's, G3's, G1's, lakubo's, etc.. will be noisy no matter what

But in terms of soft-plastic mods. the best silenced mod I've found is using a super-pirat comssa with ballsign style gripping, tape a layer of tape around the ridge part of the cap with an index card shoved into the body to absorb the noise. It works out pretty well for the most part.( Just put the HGG tips inside the comssa cap)

Anything with metal tips externally showing will make noise regardless. Inktubes will click etc.

But that's all I've found that works well for the moment.

Hmm...I don't think you need to cover the entire pen with a noise dampening layer in order to get a virtually noiseless mod.

They key is to decrease the chances of the pen colliding at a rigid point. If you decrease that probability enough, then even if the pen does make sound noise once in a while, it's still something that won't bother anyone. Otherwise, you end up trying to make it completely sound proof and end up sacrificing spinning qualities.

I think ballsign does a pretty good job at that. The following mod I made a while back does the same, and has more momentum.

    Spoiler:

The reason being that in most instances, the pen will end up hitting the grip areas and bounce back a bit. On the second bounce, there's practically no chance that it will hit a noisy spot.

    The exceptions:

    1. If the pen falls completely flat (parallel to the ground) and both sides hit the ground at the same time, then there's not a couple "rings" where the grip connect the caps that makes a bit of noise. From personal experience, however, most of the time when you drop your pen, one end will hit the floor before the other. If there's even a small angle when dropping, then the wider grip on the ends will hit first and avoid noise.

    2. If you happen to drop the pen with its body against the edge of something (say a table), then the full amount of noise is delivered. Unfortunately, I don't think there's a way around this because to protect the body of the pen would mean change its spinability.

grip aviare is way good,, even if you drop it parallel to the ground

The one I spin doesn't make that much noise when i drop it... probably because it has grips on both end dunno.gif?

Just put the grips on , thats all

But if you just put the grips on, it may bounce away. laugh.gif

    ballsign mod.

yeah, ballsign is very quiet tongue.gif

and definately light mods are more quiet than hevay mods

theres still one annoying thing left though.

when the pen barrel hits the edge of something (table, notebook, textbook, etc.)

like kam said, if u change the barrell, u might hinder ur spinability.

lol , I just glued some hot glue on my KT tips and it keeps it from blunting tip and deducts noise. smile.gif

For me at home,my neighbours below used to complain about the noise,(me dropping pens on the table)so i just bought a cloth and works fine.
Its really useful,it not only reduces noise,I can clean my mods with it,or even remove grips. happy.gif

    At school,its pointless,my class is forever noisy.XD

Use a heavy grip instead of metal tips? lol

  15. Dark Angel-REX

Or put grips over the tips.

Using bictory with large grips around it works.

My Bictory has tips, but double layered grip. But I don't put the grips over the tips, so it does make noises when you drop it from the tip

But, the best way to reduce noise is to not drop pen lol

yea but Mats is obviously talking about passive safety

Buster CYL's rarely make any noise when dropped, it's because of the Airfit grip that cushions the fall. Any pen with a grip whose circumference is greater than that of the pen itself would not make any noises when dropped.

I used an air fit to sub Dr KT's Dr grip tip and grip and turns out the effect is quite good. ^^

lol busters make tons of noise, MX's and pens like that clatter, busters just go like THUNK cuz its so friggin beavy.

yeah buster cyl doesnt make a sound ONLY when u drop it parallel to the ground though, what if u drop it on the tip? or an angle?

  22. Sankaku
    Date: Sat, Mar 28 2009 16:20:35

lol i said that they are so heavy, they make a loud noise when they are dropped, no matter what angle.

any mod with grips like wheels make a pretty quiet drop. but they roll away and u look like an idiot chasing them
