well, i'm looking for a permanent place to film my combos because of complaints of my present one. While watching my favorite combos for good angles and lighting i realized the RYO had the most peculiar lighting.

    Spoiler:

Wow! you see it too!?! its apparent he uses colored lights to give that Red/Blue color theme that he loves so much! still don't see it? really?? well look at the shadows! there are two, one blue and one red!

now to the discussion, is this appealing to most? is it visible? is it worth my investment?

this is what popped into my mind when i saw it:

    i didnt even notice that...
    that is really some...hardcore filming
    and i thought he quit...
anyway, if its not terribly expensive, u might give it a try
but ur lighting isnt bad either
    its moody

That's pretty cool, it can definitely add a nice mood to your spinning.

I'd definitely go for it if it isn't too pricey. And alright, you're finally getting a proper angle + cam, thank the heavens.

The cost depends on where you're getting the stuff from.

Gels and gel frames are all pretty cheap, if you order them from ETC or Rosco (Gel Brand) then they shouldn't be too expensive. The problems comes with finding somewhere to run it. Most of the cheap frames fit stage lights, such as pars or fresnels, so you'd have to find a piece of equipment to use it with, which will be very expensive. Plus you need to patch that through a dimmer, so that means you need a board and DMX cables and somewhere to house it.

Honestly just cutting a large enough gel and then taping it to a desk lamp could work, and if you were to do that with two lamps, then you could achieve the same thing Ryo is using.

P.S. I'm head lighting and sound technician for my school's theater department. tongue.gif

That's tough to say. Here in KS, we usually buy by the bulk seeing as we have lots of lights that need to be filled. I'm not really sure of the smallest dimensions you can get. Often times, you can order a swatchbook online, and just take the gels out there that you want. They may be the right size for what you are trying to do. It also really depends on what kind of equipment you use the gel on. Some lights can get really hot and melt the gels, so that adds in to the price range.

can't you use a normal desk lamp and put cellophane over it?
that might be a cheaper, easier way to get the effect

Cellophane doesn't have as rich of colors as gels. Also you don't have as much variety.

i re-created it... using origami paper....

    i used 2 lights:
a desk lamp and the room light
i put red origami paper on the desk lamp, and the blue light naturally happened from the room light
