What I really don't get is how great pen models are suddenly in the hands of more than 1 company.
papermate and Dong-A have the same model for the profile/anyball
Person's pen is like Pentel's Keityo/color twin
Dong-A's computer sign pen is replicated by Bellcolors
Why are all these other companies getting a hold of pen designs when the big companies already own those designs? I thought other companies make their own unique designs -

umm... Keityo and Color Twin are both from Pentel, not 2 companies.

I kno, i said the keityo and color twin is the same model from pentel while the person's pen is a copy of pentel's design. -

The reason pens are sold under different names and companies is because sometimes things don't sell as well under their original name. For example: the Chevy Nova (a car) couldn't sell in Mexico, but could sell in the United States. Turns out Nova in Spanish means doesn't go. Not sure if this is the real reason, but that's my guess.

Person's are made by pentel as well....
And the reason is because you can copyright an actual pen design from my knowledge.. its just a shape, you can copyright it.
And i think that other companies copying the designs is a good thing for pser's...
without it we wouldnt have: fake black beifas, bellcolors, colorbeifas, penwish's sailors, profiles, elfen, and a bijillion other pens. -

1. the huge colored label on Person's didn't say anything about pentel when i looked at some posts....
2. If company A copyrighted it's own design for Product A, company B can't make a product B that uses the same design as product A(unless if they want to be sued )
3. I'm really not sure if it's legal for other companies copied some pen designs, unless if that company is a branch of that same particular company with the same design
4. what are elfens?(never heard of them o.O)
@iamk34n3: Dong-A sounds just fine, Color Twin sounds just fine, computer sign pens sounds just fine too... y not sell a simple pen on an international scale? -

Some companies don't have the ability (money, international reach, etc) to sell internationally.
Knock-offs aren't made by the same company as the original (that would be pointless) - they're made by other companies looking to profit from a good idea. -

I told you.. im almost POSITIVE you cant get a copyright the shape to a pen.
You can copyright the name, the original DESIGN, but if anyone uses the same general shape, its totally legal.
And Trust me...ive had like a million Person's.. theyre made by Pentel. They have a small TM on the back, just as every other marker.
Elfens are yellow/black sailor subs.
And as others have said, its pretty much impossible for any pen company to sell on an international scale.
Even Pentel (one of the largest companies) has been split into USA, and JAPAN branches, and still dont sell on an international scale.
Nevermind small companies like Dong_a. -

say papermate was a branch of Dong-A ( oh no!) I'd say sharing the same model will then be acceptable (dong-a might not sue then!) if it's within the same company
maybe the anyball/profile is made by the same factory in different barrel colors (since both are made in korea), maybe it's sold by papermate under a contract with dong-A...
You just can't sell a clone of someone else's product w/out contacting them first . -

If you change the name of the brand and stuff, you can >.>'' (well, if stevie's "you can't copyright a shape" fact is correct) -

in malaysia, there is a pen called "anyball" too, but the company name is "buncho".
i emailed the company, and they said that they actually joined venture with dong-a. but because of the brand dong-a was unknown in malaysia, the changed the name from dong-a anyball to buncho anyball so that it sells better.
maybe thats also how profile gets its way from korea to USA, they just change the name.

the same factory theory would work
