whats a good pen "mod" to start off with if your not really that good? you know, just a beginners pen, nothing too fancy. And it'd be great if it was a pen that i could get close by from my house.

Pencils are fine for the fundamentals. If you learn something with a light, short pen it will be much easier and smoother when you move on to a heavier, longer one.

RSVP V1 or V2 They're cheap to make, and weight a decent amount

u should go for a regular pencil or juss get a pen and stick another cap on that its pretty nice if u get the right pen

ya id say the best is an RSVP V1 because it only takes one pen to make.
    cheap and easy smile.gif

but when i first started...i used an unsharpened pencil lol.

  10. sketching
    Date: Sun, Nov 11 2007 05:40:54

I learned how to do a Shadow Still 12 with am unsharpened #2 pencil. I may have also done my first Fulltap Reverse (Fake Reverse) with a #2 pencil.

If you really can't find anything.. go find a Bic Round Stic and tear off the clip on the cap. Put the cap on the back and get going. Once you find a second Round Stic, make the BICtory that ellusion mentioned.

i'll make a bictory, rsvp v1 and use a pencil and use all 3, to see which mod i like best... the bictory sounds really cool though xP and i think i have some rsvps, except whats a v1 mean?

The "RSVP V1" is a pen mod by Kam, in my post I put a link to an article by Kam that tells you how to make it.

Either a bictory (look up tutorials), or a RSVP MX or just a #2 pencil with erasers at both ends.

Just stick with RSVP V1. It's simple, there's an instruction guide, and, it is pretty useful for many tricks. Doing charge should be used with RSVP V1, but something like infinity should be used with a RSVP. It all depends what trick you're using FYI.

switching mods too often didn't work too well for me...

just get used to ONE pen (preferably not the Dr.KT)

I agree, you'll never learn tricks effectively if you keep having to relearn them for each mod. But if you insist then I would suggest trying something different, maybe order some stuff for a couple different comssa mods. If you don't want to order anything then make up your own, or try a retractable mx.

Different looking MX, CX, MMT, SB Vortex, trade some of your sunbursts/moonz for comssa and other pens.

Just check out the wiki section mods using RSVP and read this.

either that or a bictory since that's the pen for new psers, but i've never liked the bictory since it's double capped and so i've just never used it

I'm not a hardcore spinner, so i started with bictory, and that's wut i am still using, 1.34523 years later. CoG is at CoP, so easy to find. WHen you add grips, the weight is decent. people complain that is barrel is too skinny; that's only for the ppl used to MXs and Comssas. Bictories are also VERY cheap, with the grips, it would cost about 70 US cents.

I like unmodded RSVP's better than the RSVP V1. Just stick the cap on the back of it, put some tape over the tip if you dont want to get inked. Tri-conderoga pencils are nice.

I honestly believe that RSVP MX is a beginner pen that I would recommend. It was my first pen mod and it is fairly easy to make. I didn't have HGGs so I subbed it with a G2 grip and a random tip i found in one my pens.

Edit: I used a pentel forte tip. It seems pretty heavy for me cuz the pen leans toward the tip alot.

MX is really great. Ballsign isn't really the best for beginners but since it can be made with American parts you might prefer it. By the way, don't feel cheap about making the MX with a signo tip and g2 grip. It works great for me and I love it (plus it is more balanced than the original).

You can buy it in America, It's not American

Also, I don't see why many are suggesting a RSVP MX for beginners, other than the fact that it is cheap
A RSVP MX is back-heavy therefore unbalanced therefore harder to spin
I personally think that the RSVP MX mod would be better off for experienced spinners due to its lightness and unbalanced trait

A Metallic Comssa, on the other hand, is semi-heavy and is balanced. Great for beginners and to learn new tricks.

The frontal rings of the G2 grip goes all the way around the grip and connect bu the supergrip's frontal ring is divided into three segments

why shouldnt beginners use dr. kts?

Because if you start on a heav pen, all you sill spin is heavy pens. It's just that it's nice to spin lighter pens too. Like, if you spin a KT it SHOULD be slower than the speed you can spin like, a Flex MX or something. It doesn't look natural to be spinning a KT so fast. Plus, get a KT once you've felt that you can easily pull off a decent combo. Then again, some people don't even have KT's cuz they consider it a noob pen, as in the tricks are really easy to do with it. I use a KT for practicing tricks, but I do like the weight of it, and I use a light version to film. XD

    RSVP V1

Some mods to try once you can move on to heavier pens:

    RSVP MX
    Ballsign

rsvp V1 (version 1), V2 (version 2), MX (maximum), or BICtory are the best for beginners.

i used rsvp mx (i think) when i was a beginner.

yeah ballsign would work, its light, and u can add uniball signo tips at the ends when u advance and feel like spinning heavier mods (along w/ the BICtory)

  66. FangKing

i think that if ur a beginner, you should just use a normal pen/wooden pencil to learn thumb around, charge and thumb around reverse (basically all the fundamentals) why? because if u learn how do u advance moves with a heavy weighted pen, it will be hard to do it with a normal pen. and if you can only penspin with mods, than thats not so cool

    Some weird mod.

Take your pencil, remove the eraser.

Wrap tape around both ends, just enough so that a RSVP Grip can fit snugly.
Put the RSVP cap over it.

    And voila xD

Tips can be added into the caps if needed.

    i wouldn't recommend it
since you start off with a heavy pen, and you'll just get used to being able to spin with that weight, and moving down in weight is hard
its easier to spin light then move up, than overkill and have to stuggle with a kt feeling as though its going to get blow away by a small gust of wind

Well, if you're just beginning, you might just wanna stick with spinning a #2 pencil... if you want a mechanical pencil mod, I wouldn't exactly recommend that to you if you plan on making it cause those tend to be a bit more difficult to make. But if you really want one, I'd suggest you ask Tek or iamk34n3 or another person to make you a mechanical pencil MX or something.

So I'm pretty new to the pen spinning scene and I've been looking at some mods to try and I have a few questions. I've been spinning with an unsharpened pencil with a Pentel Sunburst grip on the end for balance. It works well for me, but I'm sure there's something "wrong" with it by your standards (any tips?). Also, I was wondering what the difference between single and double sided mods are performance wise. Any tips for a good pen to spin with? (I'm willing to do some heavy modding happy.gif. Peace.

The pen you start out with is your own personal choice. if i where you i would just start modding and find out what weight size and momentum suits your style best. but make sure you try them for a week or so because every pen takes some getting used to.

    Hi,

I'm new to this forum and to penspinning, well not really new, but I started doing it this year. I am able to do the basics.
Till now I was using a STABILO point 88 fine 0,4 pen. But as I look at videos I see cooler and much nicer and easier to handle pens. I want one of those, but I don't know where to get the parts and I don't know what the most easy to build, though very good, pen is.
    Could someone help me.
I live in Belgium, this is in europe and I don't liek ordering via internet...

    CerameX

well, first of all, those easier to handle pens are probably pen modification: Spinning pens that are made from other pens to facilitate penspinning
Then check the pen modification forum to see which pen you are looking for:
    http://www.upsb.info/forum/index.php?showforum=15

After you find what you are looking for, if you don't want to order online, check your local office supply stores and other places where they sell pens to see if you can acquire these pens.
If you are unable, you can always trade with other spinners on this board from this forum:
    http://www.upsb.info/forum/index.php?showforum=16

Hope you find what you are looking for

You're not going to find RSVP's in Belgium. If you don't order online or trade with people from other countries, you're not going to be able to make alot...
Altough it's not a mod, you can use a Pelikan Super Pirat, those are sold in almost every store where you can get pens in Belgium. It's light and is middle-balanced
I think the only mod you can make with pens in Belgium is a non-middle gripped Grip Aviaire...
Of course, you could always try to make a personal mod with pens you find.

Did you trade via the web? I just don't think it's secure enough to do this... therwise I wuold do it via Penwish.

You trade via the Trading/Buying Section of this site. Yes, if you don't watch out, then you can get scammed if you trade, altough the chances you get scammed when you watch out properly are quite small I think. But I really don't know alot about trading, so you'll have to ask someone who knows more about it. Here's a link to the Trading/Buying section: http://www.upsb.info/forum/index.php?showforum=16

And yes, Penwish is a very trustworthy site.

Read around this thread for information about some good beginner pen mods. Alot of people recommend the Bictory because it's cheap, but you can't buy the parts (Bic Round Sticks) here in Belgium, so you still have to order it, and the shipping costs would be alot if you compared it to the price of the pen.

you should try an rsvp mx or a bictory they are both recommended however for easier making choose rsvp mx(tut http://www.upsb.info/forum/index.php?showt...=0&start=0) and without ordering online you will have a harder time getting mod parts for future pens. this is just my opinion

uh... bictory, but dont waste good grips on them, or maybe take the eraser of one pencil and put it on an unsharpened 1, and add some erasers.... just a thought

Take off the signo tips, then it is suitable for a beginner.

switching mods too often didn't work too well for me...

just get used to ONE pen (preferably not the Dr.KT)

that's pretty funny, since my first pen was a Dr. KT

but I only recommend it if you really are going to stick with spinning, since it costs so much

it spins well, and it has some good momentum,

sure, your fingers will be tired, but then it'll get stronger, and you won't have much of a problem with busters and other heavy mods

Here's been my progression so far
Bic Round Stic > Unsharpened Pencil > RSVP V1 > Bictory > RSVP MX > Commsa > Metallic Commsa
I pretty much have moved to a slightly heavier/longer/more balanced pen whenever I've found myself limited with the one - can't see myself moving from the metal commsa any time in the future though! Also, the general consensus of the PSing community is to avoid KTs and busters liked a plague when starting, and they seem to be pretty frowned upon by the more advanced community too... just what it appears to be.

busters are good for power tricks, so when you want to start learning them, I recommend switching to a buster, as it will be hard to learn power tricks with a comssa (though not impossible).

    Okay
I am in a search for a perfect or almost perfect pen for me
    preferences?
I'd prefer a not so light pen and not so heavy pen like a buster cyl
    has enough mormentum
looks okay and doesn't look to flashy
medium sized barrel not to small like a pencil or BICtory

    So far ive tryed
A metal comssa <---- A little to light and i dont like the feeel of the barrel
BICtory- great pen for starters didnt like the size of barrel
RSVP MX - great pen not equally balanced tho like one side has a greater mormentum
CK- lighter than a BUSTERcyl good barrel
BUstery CYL- ive had it for like 2 weeks and i can not stand the weight of it.

So im thinking of getting a KT or an EP comssa is it?
If you think ill like any other pen just write below
    Thanks!

Yeah EP Comssa is amazing ^.^ and simple too!
But remember the old Namaes are discontinued and it might be hard to get the caps :/

Since you want something around medium weight i suggest around 14-17g.
This would include stuff like Mx^2, Signo tipped DC mods, and some others.
You could try a Stylist Pirat (which is a bit heavier than a Dr.KT but i love it)
But if you dont want something that heavy, the heaviest you'll want to go is a Dr.Kt.

Hello. I'm Danny, I am from the Czech Republic. I started penspinning not even a month ago, I was just bored and so, and I really enjoy it. I can already do thumbspin, thumbspin reverse and sonic. I know it isn't so good huh.gif . I find some of the tricks I am trying to learn a bit hard with these normal pencils I use. So, I want to buy some pens specially for penspinning. I have already registered at www.penspinstore.com, but shipping is 23 dollars and it's kinda much for me. Anyway, could someone recommend me some pens that would be good for me? Everything is better than those I'm using recently happy.gif . And I'm thinking about buying it on eBay, I hope that the good pens are there too cool.gif . Thanks, Danny

Penwish.com will have about a $10 shipping for a small order. Buy some double capped comssas, and some RSVP's and HGG's to make RSVP MX's. Both of those mods are awesome. Why not get some heavier stuff while you're there? Buy some parts for heavier mod (Just look them up in the approved or not-approved mods section).

    Happy modding

After psing for a while I think its good to start without any special mod, and struggling a bit, once you get the fundamentals down it really sets a nice pace and it gives you a better feeling of success imo, you may not spin as well, but you get more of the other benefits Thinking long run vs Short term. if you are going to start off with something use an unsharpened pencil, works better than half the mods out there.
