Presentation / Hitchhikers thumb

and how it looks when spinning

this is the thread in hand care
    http://www.upsb.info/forum/index.php?showt...p;hl=hitchhiker

and i just wanted to discuss how hitchhikers thumb affects our style

i always think that hitchhiker thumbed spinners have more of a "contained" look

im not sure how to describe it other than that

i guess its because when you spin the fingers dont look straight and hence

it gives a look like its hyper extending (?)

compared to non hitchhiker thumbed spinners who spin with straight fingers and their thumbs dont

bend as much as ours do

    what do you think?

I understand your expression "contained". As a matter of fact, not really unless you are using thumb for around tricks A LOT, which I don't.

Hmmm, thats very interesting, whenever I bend back my thumb making it "hitchhiker" and spin I think it looks more "stretched" and better than when i use a normal thumb position to spin.

uhhh using thumb for arounds? what do you mean
as in stretching them? i guess you could try not to stretch it but its not clear what you mean...

IMO, i really think that hitchhikers thumb really makes a difference at all in people's spinning dry.gif

    that's just me though

i think hitchhiker's thumb makes the spinning look like its smoother. But I wouldn't know cause I don't have one....

I always thought that 'hitcher's thumb' was just normal until I found out that not everyone could do it XD

It seems to me that it does help in spinning. Speaking for thumbarounds alone, I know that that curve helps keep the pen on the right track.

Presentation wise, or referring to style rather than ability, I'm not sure it makes a huge difference. I know that I tend to extend my thumb during spinning (and it gets annoying sometimes), but other than that I don't see a lot out of the ordinary.

well i really think it makes a difference in style

but one thing you can do is you can try not to stretch ur thumb when ur spinning

like make it like its glued to the index finger

for example, Areso from JEB sorta spins that way

but it might look/feel weird if you're the one spinning

    haha

I have a hitchhiker's thumb, and the biggest difference I see is when doing thumbspins. If one with a hitchhiker's thumb puts there thumb straight when doing a thumbspin, the pen would hit the tip of their nail, forcing us to bend the thumb just a little bit. This makes a little mountain where the top joint of the thumb is, lowering friction with the pen. This helps with more/faster spins, but makes it harder to balance.

    ^^my experience.

    true.
I can't flatten my thumb. so when i do thumbspins, i bend my thumb a little so that height of the first joint>height of the thumb

i hav a hitchhiker thumb on my right hand and a non hitchhiker thumb on my left hand...weird huh?

    hmm
    interesting...
i can do thumbspin just fine
    i can flatten my thumb
and the pen doesnt go directly on my thumb
it sorta goes on my knuckle
    just practice more yo.gif

for some reason i have a hitchhikers thumb on my left hand and a non hitchhikers on my left. i'm right handed but i dont know if thats good or bad. when i try to practice Ta's with my left its tough to do. but it does give the illusion that my hand is more "stretched'' than it actualy is

I think hitchhiker's thumb could make some tricks easier, but I don't have one. I think it could also make some combos look a lot smoother, such as BackAround > FL TA Rev > Backaround (see some of Bonkura's combo's) and its probably easier to do FL TA TF-12 or TF-TF with a hitchhiker's thumb.
