Philosophy / Girls and pen spinning?

Just out of curiosity, how many of the "pros" out there are female? It seems that most of them are guys... I mean, I know a lot of girls who can do charge or TA, but it just doesn't seem like they're very enthusiastic about getting really good at psing, except for maybe one or two of them. Is there some reason for this? Or do I just know a lot of weird people who aren't into psing?

  2. K4S

You dont see as many female spinners for the same reason you dont see a large population of guys who take up quilting as a hobbie.

There are no pro girl spinners....there are good female spinners but none that i would consider pro. Sorry, zblader :x

Women are shit at anything difficult, and it is for that reason alone that there are not many female pen spinners.

well....I think it's because women easily get angry and just stop or skip when they can't do a trick...my sister is like that....so I'm not one to judge cause it's only one girl...

On RPSC there is only one girl (my girlfriend biggrin.gif ). Her skill isn't pro, because she's too lazy to learn more tricks. But I can't say that girls are "shit" in psing and other "difficult things". And I think that it's very strange that there are few girls in ps wink.gif

annd I'm sure your not the only one thinking like this. Well on y**tube you can see video from us(other penspinnerettes) I hope you will change our mind, because we can be as good as you in ps

  17. Zombo

i think it's because pen spinning is an underground community within the Net communities, so it is harder to found, and women in general are less prone to get into the deeper realms of Internet (only scratch the surface with myspace, facebook, and the more popular ones)

Also men are usually very competitive, so they want to be good at what they do.

K4S, there are pro female spinners in PDS. But most are too shy to make them known.

Frankly speaking, I myself don't have any pen spinning friends around me. I always hope to have one =(

Haha Mats is probably single and will remain single for quite some time with that attitude biggrin.gif

Female brains are different from male brains *gasp*...maybe something like penspinning just isn't "wired" to pique their interest

  27. Imagm-1337
    Date: Tue, Nov 13 2007 03:22:57

Well, to me, I think girls lose their patience when they can't do a trick. For example, the girls in my class. When I kept on doing TA Harmonic, I saw them trying to do "Thumbaround" and they were not sucessful, so they threw the pen. They do that after they try to do one unsucessful-thumbaround. Since they lost their patience on one of the tricks, it's harder for them to move on to a more advanced trick. But about 3-4 girls can do thumbaround in my school. And I meant that by the entire school. That's what I think.

    P.S. I agree with Crzyazn's comment on Mats tongue.gif

  28. zblader
    Date: Tue, Nov 13 2007 03:33:32

lol, how come i didnt throw the pen away? i got three years spinning pens, so im cool. xD. XD. most of the patience i have now is due to pen spinning. ;>. it taught me that difficult things can be achieved if i am determined to get them. ;>. but that's just me smile.gif.

I agree with Zombo about the underground thingie. ;>. There is no way a girl can find about pen spinning without someone telling her about it. Sometimes, that occurs with males too dry.gif. xD. You guys just surf a little bit more on the interwebz. xD.

I loved pen spinning the first time i saw it smile.gif. <3. XD.

girls are genetically the same as boys, except for an x chromosome instead of a y so hypothetically, we are not that different.

there are quite a lot of girls who know the simple stuff, but probably never wasted their time trying to develope the intrest farther. maybe we just have no life....l

Wow. Then, that's a rather unique case.

I think pen spinning isn't popular with girls/females because it isn't a social activity. One basically spins by oneself alone initiallly. That probably makes it unattractive to females as they are known to be social creatures (like to communicate). To turn pen spinning into a social activity, one would need to find another with the same interest first. However, that's a difficult task due to the rarity of pen spinners in the general parts of the world. That's probably the reason why pen spinning websites are set up, as it's the internet is pretty much the main, if not only, way we get to know others pen spinners.

A lot of girls may have the interest there, but they wouldn't know where to look. It was pure luck that I found penpinning, but Penspinning is getting a lot more coverage now, but we probably haven't seen more members because they are mostly in non-english speaking countries.

Non-English speaking communities or at least just ThaiSpinner has a lot more girls. We even have a female moderator! I think this is because we talk less harsh over there... Most of the girls don't learn ps because of two reasons - either they just pick up the pen, try to do TA, the pen falls and they say "too hard", or they just don't try it because you look like japanese nerd while penspinning (nothing agains japanese ppl, thats just what the masses think of psers).
But I actually know one girl that does pen spinning, she is from my class and does only FingerPass+Various Sonics all the time. She doesn't care about penspinning, she just does it, she is much better than me with Sonic, but I doubt she will every do more. She actually asks me sometimes how'd I do some tricks (mainly coolish infinity), but she doesn't practice them..

ROFL at Mat's blatant sexism. Lol what a tool. 'Girls are shit at anything difficult' pff.

Pen Spinning is an obsessive hobby, IMO. It's for people that get easily absorbed/obsessed into little things. 'Coz when you first start pen spinning that urge needs to be there to just like, 'omfg -drop drop drop-' and then continue attempting a trick. (lol im so coherent right now xD)

In response to this 'tomboy' theory appearing:
Culturally speaking pen spinning is NOT manly. Espescially not in the states. It's nerdy and from a manly man perspective, it's dainty and flowery. Real men spin things like rifles (IE in the army, etc). If anything PS would be a hobby geared towards women. Culturally & genetically speaking anyway. I mean I'm fairly certain people would be more interested in penspinning in general if they saw graceful women hands handling the pens rather than big hairy man paws doing their thing.

Nobody on this board thinks penspinning is manly, most people know it is nerdy, even though it is not always nerds who spin.

The dainty and flowery part I disagree with, how is penspinning flowery, doing tricks with a pen isn't really flowery to me, especially people like Eriror, T_N_C (ChauTran) what's so flowery about their spinning?

Hello and a wonderfull (whatever daytime you might be reading this....)

As a pen-maniac and pen collector I always have about a dozens of pen with me, mainly for sketching. Hope to get better, still learning the proper Thumbaround happy.gif.

Started two weeks ago, mainly following videos and reading this board without acting myself for 4 month right now.

To speak for xtine and defend female püart of human species (more than 52% of the world population are female).... they might not be into too compplicate stuff for two much, but if certain females (women, girls) get interested into something, they can endure more stress and pain then most men.

We still live in a world mainly focused on male actions, the female emanzipytion not being to old in world history.
Men have oppressed women for decades and milleniums, never giving women a chance in a lot of fields, maybe being afraid of concurrent-behaviour.
Just think of female researchers, like Madame Curie, who found out about radiant chemicals.

Or about every body jelling and shouting for the male soccer world championship. And the germans, for example, did not win since 1990. But german soccer women won in 2003 and 2007, but you nearly never see the games in television, you only hear it when the are world champions again.

That is a way to suppress female successors by media control.

And last but not leat, a lot of women are proud of what they can do and do not have to "show off." Men, like little children, always wnat to show of and get compliments for what they achieved.
    Right?

Wrong. Not all men are show-offs, though men tend to be raised in a way that tells them that they should be in competition with others. I can't speak for others, but I don't like to show off and actually don't try to spin in front of others. I started spinning as something for myself to do, not for something to show others.

so far, there's only been 1 boy who asked me how i spin... and there's been more girls asking me how i spin... i think it's because over here, we have many "groups" of friends in which your friends are not afraid to ask you (because you are their friends duh) and they see you spin more often... since i'm a girl, my group of friends is 100% comprised of girls. xD

I do believe most girls see this as a nice thing to do when you are insanely bored, other girls see it as a hobby and there is a difference.
The girls in my school can only do a TA (along with everyone else in my school except me and teatime) but the point is that girls usually do what the other girls do and since there isn't alot of motivation from the other girls to practice PS- we don't see alot of girls doing it.
This doesn't mean we don't see ANY girls, just not so much as boys who usually like to stick out with things other than looks (which girls in my school seem to focus on mainly, not that I'm complaining ^^).
Also it seems girls do tend to give up realy soon, I once gave my MX to a girl who said she would like to practice for a whole lesson while I was at sports, she said she stopped trying after 2 minutes...

Reality is, pen spinning isnt life. Its a hobby. Girls happen to not spin that much because they either: never heard of it or just have something better to do. Yeah you see them do TA and charge and wuhtnot. They probably dont want to keep going because their eyeliner is too light for tricks. All in all, girls are complicated. That sentence that i bolded kind of have the right point. Pen spinning isn't life to me, i can't be sure i will into pen spinning forever. Doing some tricks like TA harmonic and sonics and backarounds during free time for the rest of my life isn't a problem, but i might not keep tracking what's happening in pen spinning world.

Just recently, my business law lecturer said something, although not mainly about male and female, but in between has point about male and female.

(The following case is only refer to my branch college)
He said, those who took accounting course are "kia si"(hokkien language: direct translate is afraid of death, the actual meaning is something like afraid of losing, want to have steady and good income job), those who took marketing are people who more relaxing kind. Then he continued, accounting groups(classes) have more girls, marketing group(only 1 group) has more boys.

So, i think you will get the point there little about girls and boys.

BTW, i'm not interested in accounting. dry.gif

My opinion tells that the average girl will start in a discipline beacause it implicates her emotionnaly. Or it is cute or beautifull.

Penspinning, (although some persons says PSing uses emotions) penspinnning does not implicates really emotion, except at the level where "only" spin is not enough.

People should be allowed to express opinions, its forums like this that debunk generalizations like that. Through conversation. This is a good place to talk about these sorts of topics.

I think lots of girls are easily intimidated. There is a large majority of girls that lack confidence. I think once girls start taking more chances and realize that they can get better at things even if they suck at them at first, they will get better. Boys are normally conditioned to this standard. Boys are pushed to work harder, to learn more, to become stronger. I think society has conditioned people to be that way. This is not an innate flaw in women, they just think it is.

Um, it's not that at all. Girls aren't intimidated by a bunch of guys spinning pens. You don't pose any threat or anything... well, the biggest threat is us getting hit in the face by a n00b with a pen. xD But um, in my opinion it's most girls just don't care enough to try. I didnt mean intimidated by boys, i meant intimidated by the activity. You said it yourself, "it's most girls don't care enough to try." I think that you're right and that it is apathy and a difference of drive that is the reason that more boys play video games, and that more boys pen spin, play musical instruments, etc etc... I think its probably the cultural push for boys to get better at whatever it is that they enjoy doing, rather than an innate ability to do so.

I realize that i'm completely overgeneralizing and that there are many, incredibly talented females, but i also think that it takes a lot more encouragement and support from the outside to get girls to stick with new hobbies, especially ones that take a lot of concentration. Females are also tend to be more apt to ADHD(hyperactive), rather than boys who are more ADHD(hyperfocused). Hyperactivity means you have an easier time multi-tasking, but a more difficult time focusing on one particular task for extended periods of time.

My girlfriend just started Hoola-hooping (youtube it, its cool), she's made a couple of really nice hoops but its so tough to get her to stick with it and go outside to practice everyday. She needs a lot of encouragement or she gives up quickly. I didnt mean to say that boys are better than girls or that girls are scared of boys...i just meant to say that many girls are intimidated by tasks that they are unsure about having the ability to acomplish. How many times do girls ask guys to do things for them....(usually mechanical tasks)? How many guys ask other guys, or girls to do things for them(especially mechanical tasks)? probably more girls will ask. Guys tend not to ask for directions and usually try to figure it out on their own.

    Opinions?

I know a lot of girls that can do thumbaround and charge. However, they don't seem to want to learn other tricks.

well, my take on it, is that generally girls just aren't into like, penspinning, or other manipulation tricks. it's sorta like gaming or rubik's cubing. there aren't too many female gamers / rubik cubers, if i'm not mistaken.
oh! and it's like breakdancing ! but i digress.
i agree with the whole cool/cute statement, and since i'm sort of ALWAYS on the cute side, girls tend to do cute things. sure, ps is good entertainment and looks helluva awesome, but girls just coo and gush at it, not really think, "mannn i'm going to learn to do this" or however guys take on cool helluva awesome things.
and the fact that most girls (at least the ones i know) haven't even heard of penspinning, and those who have have heard of it from a guy. (i did, for that matter)

but i have to put in that guys can totally meet/chat/pick up girls by penspinning. smile.gif

at school 2 days ago i was just showing off a bit to the guys who were sitting around me, then a girl came to watch. she said something about how theres these people who can make the pen go around their finger. so i proceeded to do a bak. Then she talked about how people who do bad in school are the vast majority of penspinners. (ouch)

it really depends on what type of person they are really.

  184. colorfulXinsanity
    Date: Fri, Aug 1 2008 06:13:53

ehh :/ personally i think that most girls are just too lazy to learn or they think of pen spinning as something that's really nerdy ( which may be true? ^^)
girls just don't have the motivation to learn things like guys do. The ones that do usually just start something, learn a trick, and give up because they don't feel the necessity to carry on with it or they find out it's a lot harder than it looks.
Also, i know a lot of girls that don't want to be seen as the nerdy type because they think of nerdy people as socially awkward kids. If people see a girl pen spinning and comment on how it seems sorta nerdy, then i think she would give it up because she doesn't want to fit into that category in her friend's eyes.
ehh i guess the point i'm trying to make is that it's just not socially acceptable to be a nerdy in girl world yet and this shouldn't be the case because girls who pen spin are fricken awesome ^^

by the way i totally agree with jenny..you guys can totally meet, chat, pick up girls by penspinning. wink.gif

Non-English speaking communities or at least just ThaiSpinner has a lot more girls. We even have a female moderator! I think this is because we talk less harsh over there... I mean more manners and stuff. Here when a girl make an intro thread it would be 4 pages long. Over there people are nice and more kind to them.

People get curious about "how I can twirl my pen really fast with my fingers" so i end up teaching a lot of people fundamentals and stuff. Maybe 50% of those people are girls but the girls usually get frustrated faster and stop after learning the ta and charge, whereas a few boys stayed with it long enough to do harder tricks. Im not saying that girls are lazier than boys or something, because that is the opposite of the truth in my opinion, but maybe girls, in general, would rather spend their time on something productive.

meh, i hate how people could think that penspinning is unproductive when watching TV is probably LESS productive (at least MTV is), and they probably do as much of that as you spin.

Girls actually made me start penspinning. Several years ago I saw a vid (which i know now to be Kam's promo vid for pentix) and forgot about it, then a few years later girls started spinning their pens with the charge in school, so i remembered the vid, thought I'd like to learn, and decided to look up penspinning online.

That's the exact vid that got me into penspinning!

Anyway, before I started, I'd NEVER seen a girl spin a pen (besides my sister doing charge). It's always been a guy with thumbaround or charge...

It was japEn's 1st collab that 1st inspired me. Den my frens started spinning, thus i thought it'd be fun if i join them. And here i am. LOL!

And girls tend to get very frustrated after few tries. OR, they tend to stop after learning fundamentals that they can do during lessons.

I once had this female fren of mine, she said "BEN!(My real name) Im feeling so depressed now. xxx(fergot name) just started pen spinning a week ago and he is able to do tricks better than me! (she have spinned for like a month or so. but a casual spinner) I've come to realise that guys are more gifted in pen spinning. (And gives me this face >.<)"

I ended off with, "Gender doesnt matter =.="

I guess the reason girls don't spin as much as guys because for most girls penspinning isn't social enough. Like for me, if I had someone to spin with I'd do it again. I'm just not going to sit in my room and spin a pen for a few hours just for myself. But going to a gathering and spin together with other people, that would be awesome.

    *cough*

Nah actually if girls pen spinned they'd probably be a lot better than guys' but they don't really have any motivation, I mean what's ANYBODYIES motivation for pen spinning? it looks cool? it's a cool skill? ... hmmmmm.....
