General Discussion / Spinning in space?

So, our teacher showed us Space Odyssey: 2001 the other day, (I slept through it lol)
And I saw someone's pen floating in midair and I was like, what if you can spin with no gravity?
Aerial busting would be pretty hard I would imagine or any aerials to be precise
What do you think? -

Well that seems kinda cool, but I doubt any of us will go into space, but u never know.

It would look like slow motion I think. Busting would look cool and probably easy since it would be slow.

A lot of "normal" tricks would be harder - topspins use gravity to keep the pen on your hand, aerials use gravity to bring the pen back down, arounds use gravity to pull the pen back around, etc.
But there are probably a lot of things in zero-gravity you couldn't do with Earth gravity. -

i agree with JoeNugget. it will be in slow motion.
aerials would just float off. arounds would probly be normal, just slow. top spins...well i think theyre gonna be the same too

Learning tricks like Charge will be a lot easier, but pretty much everything else will be nearly impossible

Why would it be in slow motion O_o just because you remove the downward force acting on the pen doesn't mean its harder to move, it would be easier if anything. Fingers move at the same rate in space as earth. and if you are talking about aerials, they will fly away faster and not come back if you did them like on earth. Of course I never spun in space so I wouldn't know.
I would think it would take some getting used to, but you should be able to do most tricks in a zero gravity environment, minus aerials and free spin tricks -

Hm.... how do you actually do aerial busts in space? the pen will just float off, there won't be a 100% chance of it coming back to your fingers(if I'm not wrong) XD

Let's try.
Stalls: No highspeed stuff, won't pop out of your hand.
Between fingers: Easy, there is no downwards force so you shouldn't have a problem keeping it in your hand.
Aerials: Easy; instead of your pen flying away, it will only fly with the force you give with your hand, which can be small, and easy to catch again. (Maybe a bit further away than it might be on Earth, cobra bite cough, but it'd be easier because of that.
Over-the-hand tricks: Move your hand up, not the pen up. You can emulate the same force with the hand's motion, rather than the pen's. The shadow would consist of you twisting the pen, the lifting your hand to make the pen spin above. -

Things like arounds, neosonic etc. would look ugly, you'd have to move your hand up to catch it, but I believe busts, fl ta and most of the fl continuous stuff would be much easier without gravity. Interesting idea, I thought about it before, too bad it's unlikely anyone will try it in the nearest future.

Not in the confinement of a spacecraft.
And they dont move in slow motion. It would move at normal speed.
I think baks and rotational tricks will be hard. Neosonic won't go around the index finger anymore. It'll just fly straight off towards you if you do it like how you would do it now.
I think catching aerial tricks will be hard cause the pen moves away from your hand and you have to catch it back every time. I'm not sure what will happen to conic tricks but I doubt they'll change much. -

What if you hit your pen trying to catch it and it flies so fast and far and there you go you lost your pen because it never stops.

IMO, aerial busting won't be possible that much since there is no gravity to pull it down. the moment you make an aerial, it will "fly" away. If you do aerials, do it in an enclosed space or with a "gravity generator".

why do you guys all like to make up stuff?
There would be no slow motion, the pen would actually move slightly faster because there wouldn't be any air resistance
ALL tricks would be possible, it would just take relearning. Free spins would be the most difficult and would be pretty sketchy
Aerials are possible, you just don't throw it up, you let go and catch it when you want to
well ignore the speed part only applies if you were somehow spinning outside the spacecraft but then you would explode
so it would be the exact same speed as on earth -

If we're talking about being in a spacecraft where there's no gravity, couldn't we just go into one of those zero-g chambers?
Unless you're talking about spinning in actual space outside the spacecraft, but that would be impossible. -

It wouldn't be in slow motion. The only thing different is that there's no gravity - if the pen goes up, it's not coming back down.
Inside the spacecraft, astronauts don't wear spacesuits.
You could simulate zero-gravity in an airplane traveling down, accelerating at 9.8 m/s^2. There are, I believe, some companies that do that. -

lol i think it might be rather hard to actually spin in space since the 'non-gravityness' will actually cause the pen to float around in random motion and it'll actually take skill to be able to control the pen and not have it move around randomly.

Most tricks will be wacked like baks, shadows, busts. It is possible to do those moves but it will be like slow mo and it laggs in the air. But moves thats stays between your fingers will be slow mo, infinity, twisted sonic, sonic, demons sonic, any other type of sonic. Arieals will be wacked. Imagines pens floating and a person trying to swim to get it. I wonder if swimming in space helps you move around?

well, for example, if you did thumbspin, it would spin forever. aerial tricks would be impossible. you wouldn't be able to drop your pen, though. -

Not forever. There's friction between your hand and the pen, and the air and the pen. Also, it would be hard to keep the pen on your thumb because the slightest upward motion would push it away from your hand, and the slightest downward motion would pull your hand away from it. -

If you can write spinnig pen equations of motion, you will find any tricks with their equations containing force terms due to the gravity, air pressure, and any other factors related to the space environment would be simply affected by the difference in the environments.
By the way, we can't carry our favorite modded pens into space, because those pens cannot withstand the severe environment of the space such as an extremely low temperature, ultrahigh vacuum, etc. -
