Spoiler:
Hey everyone, this is dori with my third tutorial.
This is my first REAL and original mod that I didnt just mooch off another creater by making the mod mp, if you know what I mean. XD
After a few requests via pm/SOYP, I decided to make a tut for you guys; I will be very thankful and lucky to get another approved.
Anyways, a couple weeks ago, I thought of making an entirely new mod integrating a couple key concepts I thought were important:- Simplicity ('single sided mod' look)
- A stable mechanism
- An efficient back 'clicker'
- A slightly heavier version of the MP MX
All of these bullet points were thoroughly addressed while creating this mod. I didnt want to make it too flashy or anything, keeping it original.
As a sort of continuation of my previous "MP MX dori style", I wanted to improve it even more by making it heavier (to accommodate a broader range of spinners) with, of course, efficient clicking.
I also had the concern of the price of this mod, trying to keep it as cheap as possible. I also wanted to try and make the tutorial as easy to understand as possible; so please, if you have any questions, ask!
So without further ado, please continue to the tutorial!
Spoiler:
Statistics:
-----------------------------------------------------
[Name of The Modification]: HiTec3 Mod
[COG]: COP (seriously )
[Length]: 18.7 cm
[Weight]: MX^2 < This mod < Ayatori
[Style]: Single sided
[Writing-Mechanism]: Mechanical pencil
[Ink-Type( If applicable)]: 0.5 lead
[Estimated cost]: $12
-----------------------------------------------------
MATERIALS LIST
[Pens-Needed]:- (1) Double Action MP (subs at bottom)*: just the mech
- (1) Pentel RSVP: body, backplug, grip
- (1) Pilot G2: grip, large clicker piece
- (1) Pilot G3 (metal tip): cap, tip
- (1) Pilot HiTec-C: tip
- (1) Pentel HGG (or old HGR): tip
*MP subs: PhD multi, Papermate Extend Multi; there are plenty other no name subs as well.
-----------------------------------------------------
Step 1
Gather your pens.
Strip your pens.
*note: Yes, I did use a Capri Sun® drink straw, I got tired of blowing inktubes.
It is about 7 cm.
Step 2 The Mechanism
Tape inktubes together.
Total should be around 17 cm.
Step 3
Use a slight amount of packaging tape to wrap the front section of the mech. Tape at a slight angle, and do not tape beyond the point noted in the picture.
Step 4
The hole in the RSVP backplug should be big enough to let the inktube slide freely up and down.
Sand the RSVP tip using a file instead of cutting the tip with pliers/scissors; sanding it with a file makes the tip flatter.

So sexy dori

Date: Wed, May 27 2009 01:44:24QUOTE (Ilvdrftng @ May 26 2009, 06:44 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>So sexy dori
Thx Colin for the bump
Step 5
Self explanatory
*note: You may have to use trial and error to get the right thickness. Take the mech out to add or reduce the amount of tape on it. The mech should be firmly stuck in and should not come out while writing. This may take some force to get it to stick out far enough, so be strong!
Step 6
Self explanatory
*note: The tip of the mech should be sticking out a little bit to enhance writing.
Step 7
Self explanatory
*note: The hitecc tip is bound to slip off even with the g2 grip on, so be sure to use a good amount of tape to secure the hitecc tip as far down as possible to the RSVP body.
Step 8: The Backcap
Self explanatory
*note: The G2 clicker can be subbed for a HGG backplug, but I just used a G2 clicker because I have too many. The tape should be enough to expand the RSVP grip slightly when stuck inside.
Step 9
*Add insert now
Step 10: Finish
Put on the cap, spinclick away, and you’re done!
(same as beginning pic)
-----------------------------------------------------
FAQ:
Q: My mech’s tip isn’t extended far out enough to let me write.
A: You should have pushed the inktube in more from the back. Refer to step 5.
Q: Everything in the backcap keeps falling out.
A: Thicken the G2 clicker in step 8. The G2 clicker is the key to keeping everything tight in the entire G3 cap.
Q: My mech wont even click.
A: You put too much tape below the certain point in step 3. Cut the excess.
Q: The mech keeps sliding back in when I write.
A: Use more tape around the front of the mech. You will have to redo the trial and error process in step 5.
Q: My cap keeps flying off.
A: Thicken the amount of tape around the end of the inktube in step 9. Again, use trial and error.
-----------------------------------------------------
I hope that was the most boring FAQ you’ve ever read.
Anyways, Pros and Cons:
Cons:- Costly.. for some?
- Tedious to change insert
- No eraser
Pros:
(from beginning of tut, I'll say them again)- Simplicity ('single sided mod' look)
- A stable mechanism
- An efficient back 'clicker'
- A slightly heavier version of the MP MX
-----------------------------------------------------
Thanks for reading my tutorial! Questions and comments are deeply welcomed! -

So it's a MP MX v.3 with a Hi-tec tip, a g3 cap with a tip in it?.
Wow so very innovative
It's a variation. -

I'm so sorry imatt, but how different does it have to be?
All I wanted to do was make a heavier mp mx sort of mod...
So all mods that use v3 mech with rsvp body are variations of the mp mx v3?
What if I simply changed the body to a g3 body instead? Would it still be a variation?
What if I simply switched the rsvp grip in the back with a g3 grip to match the cap?
What if I simply siwtched the front two tips to a signo?
What if I just did all of the above?
Would it still be a variation?
Because the only similarities my mod has to the v3 is:- RSVP body
- mechanism
That's about it.
Sorry, this is my first 'original mod', and I dont really like arguing over what makes a new mod and what makes a variation.
I was pretty sure it was considered new...
This is why I should just stick to mooching off people's mods by making them mp.. Sorry imatt T_T
But thanks everyone else for all the encouraging comments!
Edit:
I even followed all your tutorial guidelines, imatt! XD -

lol, his way of saying that it won't be approved. -

It's a heavier version of the same thing.
To me this is like the MX² of the MP MX v.3
It's not really a new mod, introduced a few new concepts such as tip stacking and the rings.
But there's nothing really new here.
My iMaker for instance is a variation. It's a reeder mod made with an rsvp that has full body inserts. Not a new mod.
I commend you on using the proper format, but it's purely my opinion that I still say it's a variation. -

I don't get it. All approved mods must have new concepts?
So tutorials like this (credit LenZ) or this (credit Overground) should not be considered 'approved' because they doesnt 'bring something new to the table', yet it is?
I can find a whole lot of other examples if needed.
I'm simply trying to make a heavier single-sided mechanical pencil mod, because most single sided mp mods spin like an mx. (true, no?)
And really, my mod spins nothing like an mx. (which we all know is back heavy)
In fact, COG = COP, giving it an entirely different spinning experience compared to an mp mx.
And you still didnt answer my questions,QUOTE (dori @ May 26 2009, 08:40 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>What if I simply changed the body to a g3 body instead? Would it still be a variation?

Idk, I at least would like some clarification for future references so I don't make the same mistake.
Plus, from the v3 tutorial, I used a different method of incorporating the mechanism. My way uses less tape (no exessive tape near the backplug) and is, imo, more stable.
And sorry for being so defensive, this is my first attempt at an original mod, so thanks for putting up with me.
All feedback is totally appreciated, especially coming from you imatt. -

The MX² is back heavy, unlike this mod, just like dori said. And I made something like this before (but not MP) and also like what dori said, it spins NOTHING like an MX. -

I have to go with dori. I am really tired of hearing stuff isnt a new mod its just a variation (unless it's someone who posts a new tut every week...). He made a good thorough tutorial that is easily understandable and iMatt, I dont really think you should be talking. You and your new basically seven g3 variation is no newer than this is. I've been seeing a lot of crap like that lately how if it's a japenese mod with one thing that's different the tutorial will get approved. So yeah, boo
lol btw good job
btwbtw- mx^2 is mx variation. tutorial approved. wheeeeeee -

I bet this provoked the modding challenge made by iMatt... oh well -

Quick question. can you use a Signo tip instead of a G3 tip?
-

hmm the weight in the back would be more, but if you're okay with that then sure
reason is, the g3 tip is in between the signo tip and hi tec c tip in terms of weight. (closer to the hi tec c tip)
@everyone else
thx for the support!
This mod really does have its own spinning style; nothing like an mx, so its no damn variation haha -

so a hi tech c tip would be better? cuz i can get both .

Yes, I think that would be better than a signo; although i've never tried it myself
so no guarantees! -

Parts;
1 RSVP
1 v3 mech
1 g3
1 HGG tip
1 Hitec C tip
1 G2
Make an mpmx v3
Take the ring of RSVP grip, and cut one ring off
Place the ring in front of the RSVP
Take the remaining piece of grip, and stuff it into a G3 tip
Put that into the g3 cap, and stuff in as much as possible
Take the large click from the g2, and cut at desired length
Add tape so its snug in the rsvp grip
take the G2 grip, and put it in the front of the rsvp, in front of the ring of rsvp
Teflon the hitec c tip on the hgg tip
kthx -

this is one of Dori's personal MP mod -

so i finally got around to making this mod here are some thoughts
-convenient, reliable mp mech
-kinda heavy, but a good weight
-the mod rattles, but putting a few small pieces of electrical tape on the rsvp backplug solves the problem
nice mod dori
