Serious Discussion / Capitalising on IT to thrive in the current economy

All right, in case some of you don't really get what the title means, I'll put it this way... making use of Information Technology to prosper in the current economy. I need ideas for this. How do people actually make use of IT to prosper in today's economy? It can be positive and/or negative. I don't mind.
Example 1: Hackers making use of IT to blah blah blah.
Example 2: Someone took up programming and made a living by making softwares and selling them.
My examples are kinda general. I need ideas for this for my project.
(Hope I'm not posting in the wrong section) XD

this is very simple
look at the "startup" business model, which is about making an online service. That's using IT to make a company.
Companies like Google, Facebook, MySpace, Youtube, they're all startups when they began. Their creators now make millions either owning the company or selling it to someone else. Even less known sites like Flickr, Frappr, various blog sites, etc. makes a good deal of money.
How can it be negative? Piracy. IT makes piracy very accessible so companies lose money on that.
