Regular Pen Discussion / Harder barrel = More durable?
don't think so...

The tip of my second RSVP pen in TWO days chipped off. Don't know why, probably dropped it too much.
Just something I'm thinking, but harder pen barrels are more likely to break. Does anyone agree? (and put decent info why, not just "I agree") -

if it broke in 2 days, that prolly just means you were spinning it from standing level over concrete.... my msxa lasted me a year easy.....

harder plastic barrels, like an RSVP, are more brittle, so they will break before they bend. softer barrels, like a bic round stic, are more flexible so they don't break as easily.

@ Sadistic: nah, it was just the tip.
oh yeah, fergot to mention, it was an unmodified rsvp. -

rsvp tips a known to break easily. Harder barrel are easier to break and crack but softer barrels will have chunks torn out of them.

Harder barrels don't scratch as easily but break more often. Softer barrels are the other way around.

harder barrels definitely break more. for instance while trying to get and rsvp grip out of the cap, using an rsvp tip, i pushed to far in one direction and the tip just snapped off. also when i had an mmx, dropping the g2 barrel caused it to crack easily. The G2 barrel also cracks sometimes while making a G2-E2B.

For me, hard barrels are indeed much easier to break. The moment I saw my custom Rsvp mx got chipped, I put it away lol
I think bic bodies are the sturdiest xD. cheapest pen = best warranty? -

Finally someone made a topic about this
Hard body barrels (if you dont be stupid) can last easily, occasionaly the cap or the tip will break but rarely the barrel.
I like hard body barrels because they are straight and never bend. Soft barrels bend and bug me so much >.< -

G3 barrels are hard but brittle.
I seldom see scratches on them but the crack really easily. -

and now changing the conversation slightly...
what would one do to prevent pens breaking like this? -

umm imo:
-dont spin at standing level over concrete, blacktop, etc. (as Sadistic said)
-dont put too much force when trying to mod it (like when pushing rsvp cap onto the back end)
-try not to put the pen in ur pocket, if you do, be extremely careful to not bend it (my friend put his pen in his pocket and when he sat down, his rsvp cracked in half. i think he put it in his butt pocket, but i think the front pockets might bend the pen as well)
-when spinning, put a flat-ish pillow, cloth, or anything that cushions ur pen when dropped because that was how my msxa got a crack in the cap.
and that's about all i can think up of. correct me if I'm wrong please. -

hmm... those all seem like good ideas. not so sure about pen in pocket thing though.
and about the cushioning thing, I've been using a folder stuffed with old work instead of an actual cushion. would the folder work? -

ive never really had a barrel brake, but i do agree with the softer barrels bending and stuff, i love supertip bodies but they scratch easily. i usually use a towel if im on a hard table, but usually in over a table with a soft plastic over it so i never really worry about it. ive also found that razzle dazzle barrels brake a little easier than regular ones :shrugs:

Have you ever tried to scratch a Tornado mod body? -

The harder the barrel the more chance you get for it not to break.Example my G3 mx.

it feels better to spin soft barrels like lil hands, supertips, comssa, memory, bic, etc...hard barrels are also nice to spin but yeah it does break easily that's why I only spin them when I'm sitting on the floor, bed, etc because when you're standing and you spin an mx, etc. there's a possibility that it'd break once you drop it

My Momentum snapped in half when it hit the side of a desk @ school. A failed catch from the elbow
Very clean cut, I have to say. The back plug of the RSVP was cut off perfectly.
My Crayola mod, though, has been dropped a good amount of times (standing level too!) and still serves me to date. ^^ It does have some scratches on it, but definitely no cracks. It's the material. This plastic vs. that plastic.
Maybe the grips or parts irrelevant to the barrel. The parts you add on have to be stable too. Without those you'll have an unbalanced pen so IMO they're just as important. THINK: A Dr KT with no DrGrip tips at the ends? >_>
