Board Comments / Save progress?

Yeah some ppls r upset cuz of upsb crashing and whatnot and loosing trade feedback and mod tuts. It's not horribly tedious to replace it all but it doesn't mean that its unbelievably easy. Are we gonna save the progress of the site more frequently so we don't have to move back 3 months? just wondering...

well what happened was unfortunate
usually we keep a regular backup of the site, but we couldn't even recover those backups so...
if we did we may have lost only 1-2 days max -

uhh... confused. so why was the only backup available set back in June? or wait, are there different types of backups or something? I'm not very good at understanding technical stuff. -

more recent... meaning all the ones back to a couple months ago? ooh. so if this happens again, everything will be brought back a couple months? or is something going to be done to make sure that recent backups won't be lost?

its because the june backup was the last backup found on someone's computer
all the more recent backups were stored on the server itself and couldnt be recovered. some stuff they managed to recover, but not the backups -

just wonderng, what is the point of a backup of upsb if its stored in the same place as upsb? um im not really that great with computers but to me it sounds kind of pointless? no offence meant at all

sometimes the database gets corrupted or you screw up updating the system, then you can rollback.
pretty much the worst possible outcome happened, because even if supposing we dont have a backup the webhost is supposed to have a failsafe using RAID or whatnot and it didnt work. -

wow that sucks... I guess a few monthly or weekly backups should be stored on a comp so this won't happen again if the sever crashes again... Maybe like backups of the last 2 weeks or months and when new ones are saved, the oldest one gets deleted or someting like that

I was talking to my friend about this and he said that the site doesn't have "good hosting relative to its size."
don't exactly understand what he's talking about, but I guess that's a possible solution? get better hosting (whatever that is)? -

which is why i suggested the fundraiser idea... but got turned down
well, at least upsb will get some money once it starts sellin merchandise on penwish -

I already said it, I never turned down the project. I already know that the auction is going to be up soon

i'm currently running the backup script to make sure it's working, then I'll set up a cron job so it's done automatically daily (uploading the backups to one of xshadowfire's server for now, until I find a good place to put them).
