UPSB v3

News & Announcements / UPSB Crash: The PS Time Travel Story

Some details about our recent crash

On October 9, 2009...many of us noticed a small change in our lives...UPSB was down.

Like most of you, I didn't think much of it. It was probably a small hiccup or a server maintenance. Then in the next few days, xshadowfire and I started talking to tech support, and finally realized we're not getting our data back.

So we have finally restored UPSB to the latest back up we could get, which is from late june. What does this mean?

It means YOU HAVE TRAVELED BACK IN TIME tongue.gif

Just kidding...although it feels a bit like it. It means there are some data (ok, quite a bit, actually) that we lost and won't be getting back. I know this sucks, but at least we have not lost everything.

A short of summary of what happened:

    1. The server UPSB is on crashed. Apparently there was hard drive failure. Not sure what exactly caused it. Tech support wouldn't tell me.

    2. Tech support created a new VPS, and moved the 24Gb+ data that makes up UPSB to the new VPS. We thought that was gonna get us back. It didn't.

    3. xshadowfire digs around and realizes that some folders that contained database data were not restored. We contact tech support back to see if we can get that extra data.

... too tired to type all the details

?. we realized that we're not getting the data back, and our recent backup was done locally on the server that crashed, so that was lost as well.

?+1. Seeing as UPSB has been down for several days now, and people rely on it for trades, collabs, etc. We decide to bring UPSB back from the most recent backup we have available, which is from june.

And that is why a lot of you will notice missing posts, feedback, signatures, etc.

    So, what's next?

Other than crying and mourning our lost data, the staff of UPSB is coordinating efforts to see what we can do to restore and bring UPSB back to normal as much as possible. We won't be able to bring everything back, but with everyone's help, we'll be able to get past this incident and continue to push Pen Spinning forward.

Edit: we have setup a thread with instructions on how to proceed and how you can help us get UPSB back on track. Please use this thread if you notice things missing: http://www.upsb.info/forum/index.php?showtopic=21532

I know it isn't that big of a thing, but in future when the server crashes, couldn't someone redirect the URL to a third party web site (like a blog on a free blogging service) which could give the reason that it is down and roughly when it can be expected to be back up?

I'm only suggesting this because I'm reasonably sure it can be done fairly easy. If it is too much effort than it probably isn't worth worrying about.

And also, I saw the notice put up after a day or two, and that was good, it's just that with a blog you wouldn't have to wait for the server to be running again.

    EDIT: Thanks Zombo

GTFO? I'm sorry but my friend can really take this site down -.-

    edit:

and I'm just giving some info that maybe it was my friend who did it...so maybe if UPSB was hacked, tech support should do somethin' about it to make UPSB stronger..

Tim, in most instances, if the server is still running, it would be easy to point the site to a new location, or put a page with such a link. However, in this instance, the entire server went down (we have a VPS, and the VPS was gone due to hard drive failure), so we couldn't put anything in place quickly.

In this case, in order to point the domain to a different server, it would require a domain change, which usually takes a couple days for the change to propagate through the web. By the time that happens, we would likely have the server back.

I did put a page up as soon as possible though, but didn't really have time to build a blog or site for people to use in the mean time (and to be honest, we weren't expecting all of this to happen or for the site to be down that long)

Clyde: it wasn't your friend. Don't worry. This was beyond anyone's power. Every once in a while epic shit happens that we weren't prepared for. The best we can do is learn from our mistakes and do better. Even big companies like Microsoft (with their T-Mobile sidekick incident) lose data once in a while.

Yeah, this was the part that I wasn't sure about, so I didn't know whether it'd be hard to do or not. That's fair enough though.

the server was able to recover the site partially, but they weren't able to recover the biggest chunk, which is the database for the forum
