Hmm... I was wondering when newcomers join UPSB, do they get a PM welcoming them to UPSB, some habits/trends/mistakes that occur among newcomers, etc.?

If not, maybe we should write one. This idea was brought up over a year ago.

    Hello %member_name%,

Welcome to UPSB! Please feel free to browse around and get to know others. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.

Please first get acquainted with our rules.

You should introduce yourself by making a topic in the Introduction section and by updating your profile: %profile_link%.

Some of our most important resources threads are colored in blue or green. You should look at those threads and use our search feature before making new topics (Read help if you have trouble searching). Do check also our announcements, located at the top of every forum section thread listing.

Furthermore, take a look at our staff picks by clicking the link called View staff picks in the upper bar. Some of our more important threads are listed here.

Yet another resource we have is the wiki. It is maintained by members of our board.

Feel free to use our "starred topics" and "starred messages" features to create personal bookmarks for quick references. Simply click on the star to the left of the desired thread and use "View starred" to list them.

Finally, the shoutbox is a valuable resource as well. It is very active and a great way to know other members of our boards. Ask questions there and others will answer you. Please read the rules of conduct for the shoutbox, located in the scrolling ticket at the top of the shoutbox.

A great way to get started in Pen Spinning is to read the following threads:

    - Fundamentals FAQ
    - Starters Guide to Pen Mods [Guide]
    - Pens & Mods Resource Thread List
    - How To Make a Pen-Modification Tutorial (<- please read this if you are planning to make a mod tutorial)
    - General Resources List

Enjoy your stay at UPSB! If you need to contact us quickly, use the "Contact" form located at the top right bar.

I think this is a very good idea.

It might stop newcomers from creating unnecessary threads, and post in the designated threads

We can link them to like the fundamentals and the forum rules

The way I figure, there are two types of newcomers. The first is the poster who manages to find this site and starts to post whatever (s)he wants and where ever (s)he wants. This poster will disregard the PM (if (s)he even reads it at all) because the poster is immature and has little to no understanding of rules and regulations. The second type of newcomer is the poster who lurks the boards here for a short while and learns how the forum operates before signing up for an account. This poster will disregard the PM because the PM will offer nothing new to him/her. Obviously, I don't support the idea, but that's not to say that it's a bad idea.

I personally like welcoming pms when I sign up to a new forum, it makes me fell... welcomed. I'm not the type to just go to a forum and start posting w/e as mentioned earlier. I lurk for a while after I register, reading stuffs and then finally I start posting like a post a week and that slowly grows to a couple posts a day and then I'm an official member of the forum that will come on several times a day to read every new topic and post there is lol.

Hmm... that's not how I figured it.

1: Newcomers that come in and figure that they have some "revolutionary" idea about a "new" trick or "new" mod. They come in, and then they post it where ever and then get flamed. And then they try to act cool to stop the flaming by making more dumb threads. [ex. hoiboy]

2: Newcomers that have been sorta'ish lurking around here and respect the board and know what they are doing. [ex. teo]

I think this is a good idea. Instead of just asking why it isn't getting done after Zombo said why its not getting done here is my attempt at writing a welcome PM.

    Spoiler:
    Welcome to UPSB

Welcome to Universal Pen Spinning Board (UPSB). We are a diverse community with spinners from all over the world.
    Before you begin to post there are a few things you should be aware of;

    1) The rules, as posted here, http://www.upsb.info/forum/index.php?act=a...mp;f=3&id=2
At the very least read all the bold text; most of the rules are self-explanatory.

    2) Avoid posting tutorials for pen mods unless requested to do so. You are encouraged to post your mods in the show off your pens thread here, http://www.upsb.info/forum/index.php?showt...t=0&start=0

In the past newer members will post tutorials of pens that do not meet the quality of popular mods. There is nothing wrong with liking it, it may work great for you, but unless there is interest from the community, there is no point in wasting time and effort creating a tutorial.

    3) Learning new tricks. Before posting a new thread for help for a trick, look in either “Fundamental Tricks” or “Advanced Tricks” on the main page to see if there is already a thread for the trick in question. There most likely is. Remember that there is a search function at the top right of the page. Also a good number of tutorials can be found on this YouTube channel, http://www.youtube.com/user/akujinnoeso#p/u.

    4) Don’t forget about the wiki, it is full of useful knowledge. Often times questions are asked that could simply be found with a simple search there.

Hopefully you will become an active member of UPSB and enjoy your time here.

I probably forgot something that should be in there and editing and/or criticism to the writing style is appreciated.

I mean that's technically redundant, since new members are supposed to read the FAQ's and rules and such before posting anyway, but I guess more precautions against spam posting is better
