Presentation / positioning of other fingers..?

when you're penspinning, do you consider the placement of the other fingers that aren't in motion at that time
for example, say you're doing an index thumbaround..do you think that positioning the other fingers could add a better effect to the whole combo?
or has everyone just let their fingers go wherever they want as long as they don't get in teh way at that moment
...just throwing this idea out there since i was practicing the sonic clip 13, and i was wondering whether letting the pinky stay down would look better or if it's just up next to the ring finger, or if it was slightly bent...and if one of those choices, plus a lot more i'm sure, could be used to make a combo go that extra mile

Well in making a combo you gotta position fingers for the next trick. So I guess yes you sorta of do have to get ready to position fingers.

The trick is partly keeping the other fingers out of the way.

If you can do something special with the others, and have the time to invest in making it work, go for it.
Other than that... I don't think it really matters at all.

it's very important, that's partly the reason why bonkura's style is so unique.

Depending on which tricks are to be linked together, it can be extremely important. Not just for overall "style" like Bonkura and Frat, but sometimes just because of the tricks being linked. Depending on what being performed, you may need to think ahead just to able to smoothly link the tricks.

for me, i always keep the other fingers which are not 'in use' moving all the time, at least slightly. so that there is a gradual transition between each trick. it looks better IMO when the fingers are not already in position to do the next trick, by move smoothly to intercept the pen just in time. laugh.gif

this has sort of become natural already, i can't stop it from happening even if i wanted too. dry.gif

I really have a lot of trouble controlling my fingers, although I really wish it could. I loved how Bonkura used to curl his index finger sometimes when it wasn't used, like DaThroat does now, it is very characteristic and looks really nice, I wish I had that kind of control and finger indepence.

It feels like I don't have enough time to curl for example my indexfinger while the pen is in 34, since I often do tricks that go directly back up to 13 or the like sad.gif

But finger positioning in preparation of upcoming tricks is really important, ofcourse.

I think that most, peoples fingers are in the place that they are when they first practiced the trick. When your practicing a trick, and you get it, you don't move the positions of the fingers not in use, you leave them there so that they don't get in the way and you can do the trick again. It becomes natural to have your fingers there after a while, so they stay there while comboing. This thread gives me an idea by the way.

while bonkura's style was good, there is also the other side of the spectrum where all the fingers look stationary and it just looks like the pen in flowing in between them.

basically whatever helps with the next trick, if not, probably keep them unseen

You obviously need to transition to the next trick but...
wouldnt it be extreamly hard to be positioning other fingers
so they would look nice. I mean people should be watching
    the pen not random fingers

I call this phenomena 'finger shape'. I believe that finger shape gives you half of your individual style, so yeah, it's pretty important.

One thing I hate doing is keeping my pinky outstretched when doing certain tricks such as Twisted Sonic Bust or Shadow T1-12. The reason for this is because I'm so used to catching the pen if it ever slips and goes down to the 34 slot. However, the side effect is my retarded pinky raising up whenever I do these tricks. Effectively, this gives me my style, but I also don't like it.

yeah, i've noticed that in your twisted sonic bust tutorial wink.gif

but um...when i made this thread, i didn't mean as much as the positioning of your fingers in order to get ready, but more of what eso's saying i guess
    like, when you're doing a sonic clip 23-12> i dunno...fl ta
throughout the sonic clip 23-12, your pinky has absolutely no effect on the trick or the next trick, so do you keep it up against the ring finger or keep it curled down? (rhetorical question, just using it as an example)

just keep your other fingers out of the way and ready for any new tricks that will involve them

For infinity combos I try to keep my other fingers way out of the way so on film it's easier to see which fingers are doing the work tongue.gif

i feel that you guys may be misunderstanding me a bit...

what i mean is...for example...say you're doing a cont. figure eight over and over and over again, do you ever think about the fingers 2,3, and 4?
like, instead of just having those fingers naturally curled down or sticking up, ever considered moving them one by one for every 1 figure eight?

    ok, hypothetical situation
have 2,3, and 4 all stickign up at first (like how bonkura does his) and then do a figure eight
then right after the first figure eight, instead of just leaving all the other fingers where they are, you move finger 4 down and curl it (now only 2 and 3 are sticking up)
then right after the second figure eight, curl 3 down
then right after the third figure eight, curl 2 down
then after the next one, bring 2 back up
then after the next one, brign 3 back up
then after the next one, bring 4 back up
    then repeat

i think that this looks more interesting to look at, especially is made fast, smooth, and rhythmic, than jsut a normal continuous figure eight

by positioning of fingers, i dont' mean whether or not you just have them ready for the next trick in a combo, or if you just keep them out of the way
i'm suggesting more of what eso had mentioned earlier about "finger shape"

add some thought and creativity to the fingers that aren't in use at all and do stuff with them that may not be relevant to the execution of a trick at all
although the pen is the main focus of a video, use the other fingers to supplement your awesome spinning

I thinks it's the cornerstone of your style and it looks really esthetic if you can control the rest of your fingers

I spin since november and with every new trick I learn, I also try to train my unused fingers to stay/move in a specific way which looks nice to me. Learning/changing this afterwards is really really difficult and so I can develop my own style which appeals to me and i don't have the problem that I don't like my own style happy.gif
