So for my bday/xmas gift I get a computer. My budget is <$900, preferably lower if possible. I'm going to order on Black Friday, so that will reduce costs.
Computer will be used for gaming, Facebook and other daily things, and video editing.
Game Examples:
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2
Counter Strike: Source
Crysis?
Left 4 Dead 1&2
etc.
Video Editing Software:
Sony Vegas 8.0
Operating System:
Windows XP
Everything must come from newegg.com
Include everything to build a computer:
-Hard Drive
-Motherboard
-Processor
-Graphics Card
-RAM
-Fan(s)
-Case
-DvD Drive
-CD Drive
-Monitor (What size do you recommend?)(I have a 17-inch monitor right now)
-Keyboard
-Mouse
Thanks for taking your time to help me out. I really appreciate it. -

-Motherboard <-- ASUS, GIGABYTE, Intel, EVGA. Make sure its socket LGA1156. Expect $200+ for a decent one.
-Processor <-- Intel i5 Processor. Its currently $199
-Graphics Card <-- Go Nvidia. Expect $200+ each for decent futureproof cards.
-RAM <-- ~$100 for decent DDR3 1600 ram in duel channel
-Fan(s)
-Case <-- A large, mean looking, expensive case is cool... for about 5 mins. Put your money into power, not looks.
-DvD Drive <--A cheap lite-on be plenty. Lightscribe is a nifty addition.
-CD Drive <--Same drive as above
-Monitor (What size do you recommend?)(I have a 17-inch monitor right now) <--I have a 17in right now and I don't need/want anything bigger, but its all up to you.
-Keyboard <--Keep your old one
-Mouse <--Keep your old one if its optical
Thanks for taking your time to help me out. I really appreciate it.
Had to do all that twice, fuck you F5.
Thats roughly $900. -

why 2 hdd, just make 2 partitions...
sucks that you gotta buy a new monitor, keyboard mouse... thats money you cant spend on the real thing... just a widescreen 22" monitor is like $200
only thing I have to say is that if you're gonna get a decent computer with a good graphic card and you also plan on OCing your computer, get a GOOD POWER SUPPLY, that should be your #1 priority. if you get a crappy one, you'll burn your computer. get a quality brand PSU 500W+ for like $150, you won't regret it. -

Nvidia
Such an amazing graphics card.

Thanks UED I can always count on you.
Few questions/statements:
-I have a ball mouse=epic fail
-My monitor isn't widescreen, which I don't like preferably
-thinking that i could get around 120gb HD and just get external HD's when i need more space.
-as for processor should i get a i7? or is it same performance as an i5
-graphics card what about a crossfire? -

Ehh you can get a simple Microsoft Mouse for <$10
Soo... you don't like widescreen?
That HDD option works too.
The i5 is the newer, budget version of the cheapest i7 CPU. Main difference is its hyper threading capabilities. With the i7 you will see 8 cores (4 physical and 4.... fuck I forgot the word.... Similated--I think thats the word-- cores) This won't make much of a difference in games. Not really worth it. So it'll be fine. That an triple channel Memory.
Graphics. A Crossfire setup might be a little too much for such a budget. And besides SLI is kicking Crossfire's ass. Go with 1 Nvidia card now and upgrade to SLI later.
For anyone who is interested and doesn't know:
Crossfire is not Just an ugly looking Chrysler. Its ATI's response to Nvidia's SLI technology.
Nvidia's SLI is simply using 2+ graphics card instead of 1. Because 2 is better than one, right? -

4 physical 4 virtual? :/
i5 is better than i7 for mainstream use def.
uhhhh get a 9800GTX? Because 200/300 series are HUGE
9800gtx is not futureproof
Make sure you have a PCI-E slot, ha ha ha... (if your mobo is what, 5-9 years old?) -

He's starting from scratch, which means the mobo will have a PCI Express slot. -

I like widescreen. Thanks UED i kinda did mroe research. the i5 heatsinks suck ass, should i get another heatsink or more fans?
which nvidia card? im thinking gtx 260 -
Date: Tue, Nov 17 2009 06:56:46
I take it you're going to overclock? Then get a better heatsink.

Changed my mind on some things.
I'm sticking with a Quad core.
Not overclocking, im not a hardcore gamer.
I heard from a friend who's experienced in building computers that 9800's are better than the gtx series? something to do with sli -

Price, probably. And size. I can't stress the size issue enough with cards these days >_<
I wouldn't really recommend SLi. 2 Cards is indeed better than one but you gotta get SLi-ready psu's and it's a hassle, and an SLi Mobo to begin with.
Get a brand heatsink. Isn't i5 quadcore? Don't bother OC'ing, since yeah you're not a HC gamer.
One 260gtx > One 9800GTX
and why aren't you looking at ATI? Their latest set 5700/5800 series dominate. Haven't seen a response from nVidia. However nVidia has locket out ATI cards for any games running PhysX, so keep that in mind... (hi Starcraft 2)
nVidia
9800GTX@135$
260GTX@200$
250GTX@155$
I'd hit the 250GTX? Just me though. It's more futureproof than 9800GTX (It'll hit up SC2, D3, CoD++. lol)
I'm not a big fan of spending more than 150$ for a graphics card so asian jew status here. [/no racism intended]
ATI
5770@180$ *This generation card
4770@115$
4890@180$ (160 after rebate, haha)
ah it's so fun shopping for cards...

... see those 5800s? yeah. No SLi/Crossfire. -
