i find it hard to believe that you can discover pen modding first, the only scenario possible imo is if someone you know has a really cool mod but wasn't spinning it and you're not aware it is for spinning and you asked how did s/he get it.
whereas for pen spinning it can be a lot of things: watched a video on internet, saw some ppl pen spinning -

I was modifying pens before I spun.... But my goal was to have a decent writing pen. Switch inks, double sidded pen, tri-pen... etc

I discovered pen spinning first and after a minute i discovered pen modding

Modding.
I found that if you dropped a pen on the floor or stamped on it, it modified how the balance of the pen was and how useful it was for, basically everything.
