General Discussion / Discovery Channel Special

So, it has come to my mind that if we were to put together some decent footage showing what pen spinning is all about, there is a decent chance that they would actually show it on the discovery channel. I'm not just kidding around either, if we presented the idea to them in the right way (i.e. a formal letter written on stationary etc. Very professional) we may be able to convince them to have some sort of special program highlighting what it's all about. I think that for anyone else who watches the discovery channel, you can agree that it isn't really that far fetched and personally I think that it'd increase the number of spinners because obviously we'd be reaching a huge number of people who've never encountered spinning before, especially in North America. Keep in mind that including the commercials it would only have to be 22 minutes of footage which depending on how interested they are would likely be filmed by them. I think that I'll probably write a letter as soon as I have some time (next week or so) but for now any input is appreciated.

    1) pen spinners are lazy
    2) pen spinners have poor time management skills.

i doubt we could pull it off, but i would like it to happen.

its called production costs. It wouldn't happen unless there was some reason for the spotlight.

To be honest, it'd be no different than a documentary on tennis. I'm a hardcore history channel/science channel/discovery buff, the closest thing i've seen to contact juggling(since penspinning is a form of it) are documentaries on stage acts.

how do you expect us to film 22 minutes of tv footage when we don't have any pro camera and recording stuff?

    they'd come film it.

I just really think, is Pen spinning WORTH a documentary?

I can get access to a pro cam.

Sure it'd be nice to have a whole 22 mins of PS documentary and I'd love to help out, but PS is still a little too young(in a way.) IMO.

ok, I'm not very experienced with filming and all that.

I'm not really sure if the discovery channel is desperate for hows though, maybe they would if they were doing a doc on manipulations though.

I've considered the problem of production cost. As far as a solution goes, I think the best thing to do would be suggest a contact juggling special rather than purely pen spinning. I've actually seen a show before that was dedicated to juggling so this might be a little more feasible.

lol at first i thought that said BABIES

ehm, I think this is a good idea, but we need someone to spearhead the project, someone with experience with TV. We need something to go on, a show or something, or a purpose.

Say if discovery was to do a special on physics or something, we'd be able to go on. We cant just go on for any random reason.

Lol, the most quoted phrase on UPSB ever. Who would actually be the person that spun for them/talked to them though?

  16. xshadowfire
    Date: Mon, Nov 26 2007 07:45:30

i never actually watched discovery, but wouldn't it make sense to interview more than one person?

  17. Tim
    Date: Mon, Nov 26 2007 07:48:37

Probably but that might mean a lot of traveling, I guess it would depend on where it's based. They want to interview the best spinners wouldn't they?

  18. Rekkuuzan
    Date: Mon, Nov 26 2007 08:00:53

Then they'd be doing a lot of travelling. tongue.gif

I seriously don't think we would be able to get 22 mins of footage that they are willing to show.

There wouldn't be allot of traveling involved, discover has locations all over Canada and the United States. Also, it wouldn't be 22 minutes of just spinning. They could also talk about UPSB, Pendolsa, cultural influences (e.g. highschool and university kids). They could do a bit on modding and all sorts of other stuff.

    Useless posts \o/

Penspinning isn't big enough here to do something like this of it. In Japan or Korea they could no doubt get 22mins of footage together, but where else? You would need to gather quite a lot of penspinners, and in the US people are too spread out.

having people spread out isn't that much of a problem.
as cyber penguin said, discovery has locations all over the us and canada.
the real trouble is getting enough people interested and thinking about what we would talk about.

I defy you all, it will be done! biggrin.gif (In reality I know that the odds of it happening are slim to none, but nonetheless it would be cool, no?) Thus I shall push onwards. Its not like it would take much work to at least project the idea anyway.

Look at it from the perspective of someone that isn't a pen-spinner.
22 minutes is a long time
    a long time
it would definitely get boring after 5 - 8 minutes
that is why you should just try to get on a talk show
like conan or oprah or something.

I tend to disagree. Channel 5 (a fairly big channel over here) ran a series of shows on very minor hobbies (though none quite as minor as pen spinning is now) and they managed to make a very interesting 30 minute show of it. However, they were doing things such as going to the world championships and such and we don't have an actual world championship event or anything like this yet. Once there is more live spinning, and a proper live world tournament, we may get a chance for a whole show just on pen spinning. Until then, I don't think there is any hope (although of course short interviews/appearances are possible now as we have already seen).

Within the next year or 2 that should be happening, recently Turkey had a live tournament, and they don't even have a board. Plus there are associations like PSAJ starting up.
