Pen Modifications / Nate's G2 Extension

So, I woke up this morning realizing I hadn't modded a pen in... I think three or four years now. I used to be pretty big into it, but I guess college kind of got in the way. Also, I was always working at a computer instead of in my notebooks and sketch pads, and my wacom pen kind of became the only stylus like thing I ever used.

But Kam was on google wave, and he showed me what you guys have been up to. Man. Seriously impressive stuff. The grip cutting, the LEDs... Dang. Seriously rad. I was floored.

So it got me thinking about this old project Kam and I were talking about years ago. We'd dubbed it the ARISG2. Or something like that, I guess. Basically an RSVP combined with a G2, to form an extended retractable pen. I was mulling over it, and this morning I realized I'd been going at it the wrong way. Combining two different pens to do what one pen was already doing was kind of bass ackwards, if you know what I mean. The G2 was already retractable, had all the parts you needed in one 2-pack, and all the parts already fit flush, so a little bit of cutting and sanding and you'd have what you were after without much hassle or measurements.

So I went down to the local pharmacy, grabbed a 3 dollar 2-pack of G2s, and got to work.

Okay. So here's where a picture says more than I could.

    Here's the final product.

Here's an exploded view of all the parts.

These are the middle connecting pieces that become the extender, along with the two pieces they were originally cut from.

And this is the final product for comparison against a stock G2.

Sorry for the poor lighting. They were just some quick snapshots I intended to show Kam. These were taken fresh after completion, and I've gotten rid of the dust an such. But what the hell. I thought you guys might get a kick out of it, and maybe be inspired to try this with some other retractable pens. Just remember, measure twice, cut once. Or eyeball it like I do tongue.gif
Anyway, I dunno. Maybe you guys have already done this? Maybe this is nothing new? I dunno. I've been out of the loop.
I really like how this pen feels though. It's everything I like about the G2, but a little bit longer, which, I think we all agree is exactly what the G2 needed all along.
This mod is also completely reversible for at least one of the pens. Just take the extender and the extra clicker out and piece it back together.

I thought about taking the clip and crown off and putting an RSVP cap on, but I think I like it how it is right now. It's not too heavy on either end, and the balance is exactly on the second seem where it comes together. I haven't decided if I'm going to use silicon adhesive or krazyglue to bind the extension pieces together yet. They stay together pretty fine without any adhesive, though.

Good to see another old-schooler coming back on the scene. I swear, it feels like it's just me and the moderators who are vets around here lol.

Anyways, There has been another version of this made. I don't recall the name but it pretty much makes a double G2. Although yours has a more old school feel to it (which I'm a sucker for)

I'm the research director of pens&mods here so feel free ask any questions.

haha! yeah. It's pretty much as raw as it gets. I've cleaned it up a bit, and I'll clean it up and polish it a bit before adding adhesive. But yeah. It's the right weight to me, and it doesn't really need any fancy bells or whistles. Why add more?

i made this mod too at home, but i found out that you can't really put a good insert in unless u cut it. also, if u you don't sand it down good, the barrel WILL crack, thats not good.
