A team like Japan should just probably be happy to get that far.
To be honest, I think it is more or less only a result of how FIFA has chosen the qualifications to be, that teams like Japan keep showing up in the tournament. They probably would not have a large chance of qualifying, where they to compete in the European or even the South American qualification.
But of course you can never completely write them off, in a tournament that is decided on so few matches as the World Cup is. Bigger surprises have happened. Like in 2002 where South Korea made it all the way to the semifinals.

they have to do it this way if they want to keep exposure in the whole world ($$$), easier also to organize qualifications inside regions (again $$$). thats why its not the true top 32 best teams

and can someone explain to me wtf was ireland trying to do being 33rd team???? how does that even work??

Yea, I understand that. Sometimes though, I think it does get a little out of hand with FIFA using the World Cup as their venue for bragging about how much of a world sport soccer is. Especially when they pull in referees from distant parts of the world who clearly do not live up to the standards of the professional referees from Europe.

Isn't it because of that whole Thierry Henry hand ball controversy? I have no idea how they would want it to work. I think that whole thing just shows how much soccer needs some form of instant replay offered to help the referees.

Well, they probably feared more the domestic consequences of appearing not to do enough about the issue.

One way it might have work, were just to put them as an extra team in one of the groups. Although that obviously would be far from optimal, and it probably would end up causing protests from the other countries in that group.
If they actually wanted to do something about the problem, it would IMO be a far better solution to have a rematch between France and Ireland. But I guess it was when that solution was denied by FIFA, that Ireland chose to propose the 33rd team solution. Sepp Blatter actually said to the proposal that it was not complete nonsense, but that it would not work in practice.

unfair for other teams in that pool, not only there is more competition ,they would have to play 4 matches each instead of 3, increasing fatigue level.

also 4 is not a good number of matches to play, it's too easy to generate tied standings compared to a small odd number like 3 and using goals scored as tiebreaker is not as reliable as victories so you want to avoid them as much as possible.

4 matches for a group of 5 is actually the reason why I chose not to use a standard round-robin format for WC08 in pen spinning.

I think the African nations will do well. Spain have to go in as favourites even though they have not won this before, they are on such a good run, great team, excellent manager. It's all right for them to take it. This tournament could be the one for Christiano Ronaldo to put his name on the World Cup greats list, so long as his injury is okay.

quick comment about the actual drawing ceremony:
did anyone else think that charlise theron was really annoying?

and also, i think christiano ronaldo is extremely over-rated
he's basically a one man team
maybe i'm biased because he plays for real, or biased because he played for man u, but players like messi, or xavi are clearly better (and now you know what club i go for XD)

He's not a one man team... However, he is best just left in a free-roll to wander the pitch destructively. I think he's at least as good as Messi or Xavi in almost all areas (except perhaps defending), but has better ball control and much better scoring ability. Unmatched in the world at the moment.

i mean even without beckham, both coles, lampard, i think they still easily outclass USA
and silly americans who think they own beckham now

    my predictions are:

    spain to take it out

england, without a lot of their upper players will probably have trouble getting past france
and while i was looking at the line ups of netherlands and brazil, 2 big surprise exclusions: van nisterooy, and ronaldinho
but i think brazil is defensively stronger than the dutch, the two being more or less equal offensively, so i think brazil should win it

    i love spain's line up
villa and torres up front, probably subbed by pedro, who will score a crucial last minute goal (barca fans will know what i'm talking about)
silva, xabi hernandes, xavi, iniesta, cesc (i still maintain its cesc, and not fabergas)
and a strong defence as well (with puyol, sergio ramos, pique)
and 3 really good keepers as well

you know what.... they could have just taken the barca team XD

oh, i also want to see germany SLAUGHTER the aussies
and hoping a win against denmark for japan, atleast....(doubtful)

wait what?.... slovenia ..... i mean, they aren't "wait, this was a actual match and not passing practice" level of honduras, but they aren't going to pose a huge threat to any of the big countries (england, france, germany etc.)
fifa ranking 22 is alright, and if you say "in the scheme of things" being that they outplayed 150 other countries to qualify then yeah, but they aren't likely to get past round of 16 (could pose a threat to USA though)
i'm starting to worry about your soccer knowledge......

also, any thoughts on biggest goal margin for the group stages?
i say spain vs honduras or netherlands vs japan

He was clearly offside. If a player who is infront of the second furthest back opposing player is passed to, there is of offside. It doesn't matter if it's the goalkeeper or any other player who is player the furthest back.

    QUOTE
A player is in an offside position if:
    • he is nearer to his opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the
    second last opponent
Fifa Laws of the Game, page 35.

(The commentator here obviously does not the offside rules)

It's pretty clear that the player who scores the goal is miles ahead of the goalkeeper (second last player).

goalkeeper counts as defender, rule says you need to have at least 2 defenders in front of you.

to be offside, you need to behind everybody except one person

usually the one person is the goalkeeper. in the regular offside, obviously the goalkeeper is always in front of the player who's offside. otherwise you would never call offside in a normal situation if you had to be behind everybody (that would be like behind the goal line lol)

in this case, the one person who was in front of the player was not the goalkeeper, but still there was only 1 perseon in front of him.

to be onside you need 2 persons in front of you. it can be 1 goalkeeper + 1 defender or 2 regular players, it doesn't matter.

It's not that bad normally. The players are complaining about it too, that they can not communicate with the other players or the coach as they usually would.
Also it totally destroys the atmosphere on the stadium, where singing or chanting gets completely drowned out by the horns.

I agree that it wasn't as bad in the England-USA game. It might have been because there weren't as many South Africans on the bleachers at that game. But still in the majority of the games I have watched, the noise from those horns has been almost insufferable.

    current feelings towards world cup:

    Spoiler:

its clear that strong defensive teams have been successful in the cup. Swiss and Serbia are clear examples. They were able to nullify the strong passing games of spain and germany. Even the danish team did well to (most of the time) close down the passing game of the dutch.
the underdogs are doing well, which is very nice. Last minute goals from generally weaker sides, eg NZ, adds to one of the most interesting group stages i've seen in a world cup.
Also good to see that even if you are the favourites, you still need to earn it, and play well. France and England generally haven't played that great football, and they were punished for that.

    Spoiler:

it has been the worst world cup ever. teams which have played better football have been punished by stupid referees or just horrible goals. spain's conceeded goal came from a messy scramble in the 6 yard box, which resulted in blood shed from pique, and should have clearly signalled something foal went on. In the germany game, klose shouldn't have been sent off, and quote from my friend "there was more yellows than a nike sweatshop". Podolski should have ripped a hole through the net with the penalty. The US game also had bad ref decisions, particularly the denied goal of the US.
France and England have generally been shit, nothing more to say here.
Brazil also weren't world class against korea dpr, possibly could have underestimated the korean side, but their defence was lacking and most of the opportunities in the first half of the game were horrible.
The goals which have come from this world cup are generally fluke goals, like the swiss, or the own goals from south korea and denmark, or from terrible defending, like the brazil and german conceeds. The only good goals were the 2 brazilian goals, and a goal from the argentina game.
also, i reinforce the fact that italy are diving bastards

Yea, it really has been an unusual world cup thus far, with so many top seeded teams playing substandard. It's really only Argentina and to some degree Holland which have lived up their favorite status.

About the Germany game, I agree that the referee did give out more cards than I normally like to see, but it has to be said that most of the cards were given on real offenses and not just dives, although other referees would probably had let most of them go without bookings the first time around. But it really just comes down to refereeing styles, some referees book people every time they see a yellow card offense, while others only do when they see the roughness as getting out of hand. This though does pose a problem in tournaments where bookings have consequences in later games, as teams which have had more strict referees are at a disadvantage.

No offence, but this is exactly why shit always happens in Africa. Why wasn't the third USA goal counted? What's with the dumb ass referees. the cameroon-denmark game looked like a good game going with what i read in the fifa summary.
might watch a replay if i can

the refs in group D have been rather horrible
kewell's card was questionable, a handball yes. deliberate? or a natural reaction?

fun fact: up until tonights results, Group F are completely tied on table results. 1 draw each, 1 goal scored, 1 conceeded

and strat: the standings/points for group G doesn't make sense
they've only played one match each, so n. korea should be on 0 points

k nice call it's supposed to be 0

cameroon denmark was CRAZY game, definitely the most fun one to watch thus far

as for the card it was clear. A handball that definitely stops a goal is an automatic penalty and red card, unless maybe he's in the process of pulling his arm away, but he wasnt

    EDIT: Joga bonito

Old video, but this is what inspired me when i got bored of soccer

The board! We keep a whiteboard in the living room to use for sporting events (for NBA games we bet on stats and stuff, so we record the stats on there)

For world cup it's perfect to show standings

    Spoiler:

(old pic clearly, it's updated for current points)

ahah we use a whiteboard like that in meetings... not for offttopic lool

brazil did well, confirming that the game against n korea was just underestimation

newzealand once again surprises us, and once again, a big name team disappoints (although i'm actually happy for newzealand, mainly because i dislike italy)
looks as though italy can still qualify, even if it is second place
if nz win the next match, they can qualify in top place

NZ is playing well but expectin to beat paraguay is a little ridiculous

brazil didn't really play that well IMO, cote just played shitty

I know what you mean. At first everyone was like "Holy sh$%%$!$^&t!! We made it to the world cup!!!" and then it was like "Holy fu*$@$^k we drew with Slovakia!!!!" The reaction to drawing Italy will get me banned. But now there's a lot of expectation on the All Whites to beat Paraguay, when at first we were pleased with just qualifying. We are getting a little greedy I guess. But the doesn't mean we can't beat them laugh.gif laugh.gif

i wouldn't say wanting NZ to win is greedy
    bit unrealistic? yes.
    blissfully optimistic? also yes

i would say an expectation to win is unrealistic
they could realistically force a draw, and hope italy also draws
in that case, points, goals for and against are equal.... what happens then?

Remind me again why people think Chritiano Ronaldo is so good? He doesn't score literally for 2 years, and he finally scores off of a fluke and everyone goes crazy.

Ronaldo is pretty good (well he used to be, not sure about now) although i do feel he is slightly overrated. have you ever seen him play for Man Utd?

spain did well to win, but didn't make most of their chances

ronaldo played like a team player for some parts of the game, and portugal as a unit, played incredibly well
if portugal play like that, and brazil are at their peak, the final match will be super exiting
and also, it probably spells doom for spain (assuming they manage a win against chile, which i'm not too confident about)
spain's defence was rather poor, esp during couter attacks
also, torres can't hit the back of the net for shit
